Tired of sitting on the sidelines and not dancing at some of the local salsa clubs, I decided to take to take some lessons because there is no faking it in Salsa, you either know how or you don’t and a 5 minute lesson at the local Mexican restaurant just wasn’t going to cut it for a guy with 2 left feet like me. There are good Salsa dancers and then there are good Salsa instructors, Michael Angelo excels at both, but for me its his method of teaching that sets him apart along with his personality and down to earthness(I know it’s not a word). He’s a heck of a nice guy and easy to see that he’s a natural teacher and he knows his Salsa. In the beginner class I took, he emphasized the fundamentals which included finding the beat, maintaining the rhythm and dancing on time. This was one of my biggest challenges because no one had ever taught me what to listen for in the music. I have no background in music so I was completely lost before I took the class. Learning to dance on time I think is the best way and the correct way to learn, and Michael Angelo teaches you how to do it proficiently. Besides some of the basic steps, we also learned some of the turns and how to lead(for the guys), but for me it was his teaching me about the music and the timing which made the biggest difference. I’m far from being a show stopper on the dance floor but now feel at least that I am capable of getting on the dance floor, in the corner at least with another beginner(ha ha). I am going to take the level 2 classes as soon as possible and then continue from there. I highly recommend Michael Angelo as your Salsa instructor, he has courses for all types of levels, give him a call or check out his website. If you are a beginner, and I speak from experience, he is the perfect instructor, I promise you will not be disappointed.
