Crème de la Cookie

Fantabulous! Love love love the cakeballs! Incredible flavor perfect consistency… Joy to the tastebuds! Everything else is scrumptious too! We ALWAYS stop here to load up before we head back to California… YUM!

Last Friday, 2/​5, I had a hankering for a cookie and I did not want some store bought creation. I craved a cookie that would satisfy my soul. I logged onto my Unilocal app, thumbed through store fronts & reviews and decided to give this bakery a try. I bought 2 chocolate chip with nuts, 1 cinnamon sugar, 1 ginger, 1 oatmeal raisin reserve & 1 regular oatmeal. 5 of the six were for me and I loved every single one! I bought the ginger cookie for a coworker and she couldn’t thank me enough for her surprise! I tried a little piece and, yes, it was delicious!

The owner lady was so nice. Gave our rowdy two year old daughter a tour of the kitchen and even a free m&m cookie. We got a few of their cookies and cakeballs and they were all good. I liked the OMG cookie the best. Whenever I’m in Dallas, I’ll probably be stopping by for cookies and cakeballs.

Tucked away within more or less a single square mile of the Highland Park area are three bakeries that are known either in part or by definition for their cookies. As per usual, I wanted to find out which were the best, and decided to do so via a head’s up competition:

Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere?
While closely located to one another, each of these three cookie shops has a totally different vibe.
Known for their award winning Chocolate Chip cookies, Toni Rivard’s Crème de la Cookie is a more comprehensive bakery, and I imagine they even do far more business on cake balls, cupcakes and other delicacies than they do on cookies. CC definitely aims for the more gourmet atmosphere that I have no doubt brings in the Highland Park moms and Louie V yielding SMU students by the droves, but I won’t say for a second that it’s a bad thing.
JD’s Chippery and Great One Cookie Co on the other hand are strictly cookie spots, although even between the two there’s a different vibe. JD’s has been here for more than 30 years, and in every way they’ve become part of the community as a mom and pop cookie shop.
Great One Cookie Co on the other hand is more of a newcomer, and Pam Denesuk’s small but modern storefront will have you feeling like you’ve truly found a hidden gem in the city with the names of cookies simply displayed with the actual wares hidden in the back.

Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost?
Another point of diversity amongst these three cookie shops related to both price and portion size. Here’s a breakdown —
Crème de la Cookie: Average price of $ 1.20 per cookie
JD’s Chippery: Average price of $ 0.75 per cookie
Great One Cookie Company: Average price of $ 2.00 per cookie
You can browse my pictures if you like to get a sense for the size of each shop’s cookie, and depending on which review you’re reading you’ll see one grouping of the three depicted below, but for reference Crème de la Cookie and Great One Cookie Company both had what I would call standard sized cookies whereas JD’s had slightly smaller cookies. The portion size between JD’s and the others is reflected in the price, but Great One Cookie Company was a real outlier with prices that were nearly twice that of portion similar Crème de la Cookie. Worth it? I suppose that depends, but it’s certainly worth pointing out.

Stars 3 and 4: How was the food (or in this case, the cookies)?
Let’s not kid ourselves here: The Chocolate Chip Cookie is the rightful benchmark for how all cookies should be measured, so for this dual star category I decided to dish out one star for the Chocolate Chip cookie alone and a second based on the others.
With respect to the first star, this was essentially a runaway victory for JD’s Chippery for two reasons. First and foremost, call me crazy, but I like my cookies to have a slightly crunchy outside and a soft inside, and that’s exactly what JD’s Chocolate Chip cookies had. My Crème de la Chocolate Chip Cookie was soft with the upside of having the chocolate chips essentially melted into the rest of the cookie, but the lack of a crunch left me a tad bit unsatisfied. Great One’s chocolate chip cookie was soft to the point of having me wondering whether or not it was cooked all the way through, but this was made up for by having a seriously absurd quantity of chocolate chips. The second reason behind my thinking that JD’s Chocolate Chip cookies claimed the category came down to the cookie ex-​Chocolate Chips, where JD’s had an absolutely delicious unique flavor that I can’t quite place whereas CC and GO were more plain if you go a bite without any chocolate chips.
With the second star in mind, JD’s once again claimed a crown of sorts thanks to their cinnamon packed Snickerdoodle that also packed a crunch when compared to the softer and more mildly flavored doodles from Crème and Great One. One thing I will point out is that the Ginger Snap at Crème de la Cookie was fantastic, and the Peanut Butter Pretzel Chocolate Chip offering at Great One should be sampled by all cookie enthusiasts.

Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could?
So there you have it folks. Again, everyone has their preferences when it comes to cookies, and my preferences line up best with JD’s for the reasons I’ve stated above. 5 Stars to JD’s Chippery, 3 stars to the rest.

Yep, there fantastic. I live in Lancaster, Texas and I plan most of my trips to take me by the shop at Snider Plaza. They are OMG Good, Wonderful and Delicious.

Came here to pick up dessert for dinner at a friends. I’d never been here before and called early in the day to make sure if I came in around closing time they’d still have a good variety. I was assured by the young man on the phone there would be plenty to choose from.
He was right, we arrived an hour before closing and there were a few people inside and only one guy at the register. He was young and looked really frazzled at the growing crowd. We got an assortment of cake balls, four cookies, and a latte to go. I was really happy with the cake ball flavors and was particularly excited about the pumpkin one. The cookies were excellent, especially the ginger and sugar cookie!
The reason this place gets three stars is because of the service. Leaving this frazzled teen alone in an establishment on a Saturday evening just made for a stressful experience. He awkwardly rushed making the latte (which my bf wasn’t very happy with) and their system was down and had to take our cc # down and charge us later. Which is fine! I understand but I wish he’d told us before we had our order together.
Our problem wasn’t necessarily with the guy there it just seemed like the place should have ensured other staff was there for a good experience for all, us and him. I would definitely return for more cake balls. Everyone at dinner enjoyed the dessert.

Close location to SMU. Not a great selection, definitelt more a mom & pop type place. Everything looked and smelled great. Everything also looked made fresh, which is a huge plus. Kinda expensive, not a everyday type place. Definitely more of a once a week or month treat for yourself.

Red Velvet cake balls… I could live off of them. That is all.
But seriously, best place in town. Head over to Northpark to the Toni Rivard counter by Neiman Marcus if you’re wanting some after 6pm.

I have to thank them for saving me in a crunch. (I ordered cupcakes elsewhere and they lost power from a major storm. In short, I found out the day of an event that I needed to find cupcakes elsewhere.).
Enter Unilocal… The only place open was crem de la cookie and I rushed there. I can’t say anything bad about the cupcakes (24) I chose, but the worst part is no one who had one said anything good about them either.
I’ve never had cupcakes everyone wasn’t ooh-​Ing and ahhhh-​ing over. Until now.
Needless to say, I won’t be back.

I really love their cookies. I haven’t had anything else there (and oh, the treats are endless!), but I will tell you that their Private Reserve cookie is a game changer. (It’s got dried fruit, nuts, a touch of coconut… nom nom.)
I take these for meetings and social gatherings and people always rave. Totally recommended!

Their cakeballs were the very first I ever tried, and they are the reason I thought I hated cakeballs… so… there you go. They’re oddly moist, but flavorless, imo.
The screamin O was a screamin yawn, and I can’t even remember if the cookie I got was good or not. Adequate, maybe?
I liked the frosting part of a vanilla cupcake I got, but the cake was dry.
And to top it all off, LARRY NORTH, you know, the Dallas fitness and diet celebrity, was there ordering cupcakes for his mother? GTFO of here, Larry, I’m tryna get some dang sweets! Don’t look at me!

This place is pretty average. Their cake balls are okay, they are very moist but lack a unique factor. The OMG chocolate chip cookie is good not great. It does seem like there is a lot of butter in it. Additionally, their macaroons are just normal macaroons. The vanilla is very sweet and the lemon is well lemony.
The products here do not have anything wrong with them but it’s not a place I would make a special trip for.

They’ve been making cake balls since before cake balls were a thing.
Everything here is ridiculously good. I went to SMU and always stopped by for cake balls, lemon bars, sparkling fudgies, and OMG chocolate chip cookies. — all of these are a must try if in the Dallas area. I haven’t found a comparable place for cake balls. These are the best in Dallas. The macarons are great as well :)

I placed an order for 8 French macarons of a variety of flavors. The macarons came nicely packaged in a box with a ribbon. The pastel colors were so pretty and were the perfect addition to gifts I gave my mom on Mother’s Day. I had some of the lemon macaron and it was delicious. They are supposed to be sweet, which they definitely were, so one bite was all I needed to get my fix.
I will definitely order other treats in the future from here due to their accommodating customer service and pretty desserts!

You had one job…
I called in an order to pick up on my way to work. There were no specialty items – cookies and cake balls. I arrived in plenty of time to make it to work – except my order had not been assembled. It’s not just about the product – it’s equally about the service. And I know things happen, but I can hear folks yuking it up in the back room while one person slowly gathers up my order making me late for work.
My office orders a lot of baked goods as you can see from my previous post this month. You are off the list.

Decent french macarons that are slightly on the large side. Not too sweet, but flavoring isn’t that powerful either. They’re definitely not the most «accurate» french macarons (you gotta go to Chantal Guillon where the pastry chef is actually French). The filling is very wet and non-​standard.
But it satisfies.
I would like this place a lot more if they used less food coloring. There’s no reason why a vanilla macaron should be blue.
Oh and I had a bite of my friend’s cookie that boasts about containing more chocolate chips and nuts than cookie. Absolutely could not understand the appeal. You want something unbalanced and dry with little elevation of ingredients, do it yourself at home. Lol!

We stopped in here to taste their cakeballs — red velvet, chocolate truffle, German chocolate, and cookies n’ cream — all had a moist filling and were decorated beautifully. I loved the sparkly pink heart table décor.

The macarons here are probably the best I’ve had in Dallas. My friend bought some one day for me and I have been hooked. I have not tried anything else but I will be soon!
Make sure to come early in the day as I believe they sell out of many flavors if you come too close to closing time.

This place has really good cake balls, the best tasting that I’ve had in Dallas. The flavors are really good, I loved the cherry vanilla. The balls are bigger and fluffier than other places I’ve gone to.
And it’s cheaper than other cake ball joints, so it’s a win win for me.

Definitely recommend trying each flavor of the cake balls! I usually buy two of each flavor when I’m craving sweets and that lasts me a few days… about $ 20 for 12 cake balls.
