School of Contemporary Ballet Dallas recently relocated to their Mockingbird Location in January of 2013.

The School of CBD was founded by SMU dance alumni to promote a higher quality of dance education and fitness for persons of all ages and skill levels in a positive and fun learning environment The School of CBD offers training by instructors with extensive professional experience. Our instructors encourage all dancers to broaden their artistic horizons and realize their creative potential.

CBD has five state of the art studios, 4 being equipped with Harlequin sprung panel floors systems with marley, and one being a sprung panel wood floor. CBD also has state of the art sound equipment to compliment all musical selections, from classical to hip-hop. All teaching methods are geared towards injury-free training. All of our teachers instruct with an injury free approach, keeping in mind that all dancers are not built alike. We like to teach children and adults how to do movements and why, not just to do them. We try to mold smart dancers that understand what their bodies are doing.

History

Established in 2005.

The school was founded in 2005 by Lindsay DiGiuseppe Bowman, Valerie Shelton Tabor, and Kelley Calhoon. Ms. Bowman was a dancer with Contemporary Ballet Dallas, founded in 2001 by Ms. Tabor and Ms. Calhoon, and wanted to create both a home for CBD and implement an exceptional educational program for a dance school with the professional company always present.

Over the years, Ms. Calhoon and Ms. Tabor have stepped away from the school; although Ms. Tabor remains the Artistic Director of Contemporary Ballet Dallas and Ms. Bowman remains School Director & Owner and Co-Artistic Director of the Contemporary Ballet Dallas. Since 2005, SCBD continues to offer strong and diverse dance and fitness programs, including classes for the total beginner thru advanced dancer, no matter what age. The school continues to expand its programs, adding their new SCBD Youth Ballet in Fall of 2012.

In January of 2013, after 11 years in Lakewood, SCBD relocated to their new, larger, home at 5400 Mockingbird.

Lindsay B.

Manager

Ms. Bowman is a Dallas girl, beginning her training under Joyce Seaborne Bader, A.R.A.D., Lyndette Bader Galen, and at Buster Cooper. Graduating high school from Ursuline Academy, Ms. Bowman then earned a BFA in Dance, graduating cum laude from Southern Methodist University. Professionally, she has performed at Busch Gardens, Williamsburg, The Frontera Festival, Austin Musical Theatre, Casa Mañana, and six seasons with CBD, where she has also choreographed. She has trained under instuctors Jeremy Blanton, Violette Verdy, Mignon Furman, Lynette Kelley, Hilary Cartwright, Joe Orlando, Antony Dowson, Myra Woodruff, Shelly Berg, Patty Harrington Delaney, Karen Kriete, Bob Beard, Ethel Winter, Irina Baronova, and Alan Sherfield.

Ms. Bowman is quite versatile; teaching ballet, tap, jazz, modern, contemporary, pointe, conditioning, musical theatre, and character dance. She loves teaching and working with young dancers and feels dance is the greatest gift to give — the joy of moving!

My daughter has loved her experience here. Professional, yet friendly environment. We are both very pleased with her ballet teacher, Ms. Allison, who is strict but supportive of the dancers. The admin is fairly organized and recitals are manageable.

If you are an adult who wants to start or re-start ballet, this is the place to come. I started as a total newbie about 9 months ago, and am beyond pleased with my experience, which is limited to dance conditioning (do it!), beginner, beginner/intermediate, and open level ballet classes. I’ve also taken beg/int contemporary, and that class is a ton of fun – I just can’t go regularly because of the time. There are a handful of main things that contribute to how much I adore this place and why I recommend it to others.
1. Teachers often, if not always, personally introduce themselves to new students and make every attempt (usually successfully) to remember their names. If you let them know your experience or confidence level, they’ll help you find a good place to stand at the barre to follow people and the other adults will happily accommodate you.
2. I don’t think I’ve ever had a class where I felt like the teacher was not fully attentive to the students. Corrections are given constantly, and you can feel the teachers watching you – in a good way! It keeps you honest and helps you to actually advance your technique. If you show that you care about making progress, they will help you get there. Finding teachers who will really invest in adults is something to treasure.
3. The other adults are kind. The importance of this cannot be overstated, because without them a ballet class can easily become a place filled with anxiety instead of fun. Sometimes dance studios, and particularly ballet classes, can be intimidating places – partially, I think, because of the focus that ballet demands. Thankfully, the adults (some of whom are professional or very advanced dancers sometimes taking lower level classes) are pretty non-judgmental. Sure, there will be a problem if you are literally running into or kicking people because you don’t know where you are going (and I’ve sometimes found myself being the person who doesn’t know where she is going and found that there is no shame in simply running out of the way and marking the steps or just watching and learning), but no one is going to laugh or sneer at you because your extensions are low or you fumble a couple of steps in a combination.
4. Student pricing is great and super reasonable.
5. Floors are great! The marley flooring is smooth and flat, with no ragged tape on top to trip you up. I’ve been to studios where classes cost more and the floor hasn’t been anywhere near as nice.
Edited to add: 6. There’s quite a number of adult ballet classes offered at various times. If I miss a morning class, I can sometimes go to an evening class. This is great for my flexible schedule.
If you are returning to ballet after being gone for quite some time, or already know the basics, I highly suggest going to Sarah Matzke’s beginner/intermediate class on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Also, dance conditioning is great.

Our kid to pre-ballet. in about 6 month she had a two /three times where she would have the same teacher. It was always more often a different sub every time. All of the teachers seemed good, but its hard to have continuity when its a different teacher every time. They never seemed to be in tune at all w/kids personality. If one as a parent would mention anything they didn’t seem to care much. Our kids group couldn’t learn the routine for the end of year recital, due to the inconsistency of the teacher, which in one occasion didn’t even know the song to be dance to. Eventually i emailed the director about the lack of professionalism observed, and never got a response back, not a single acknowledgement.
Recital was a ok. but everything was nickeled and dimed. 2 months later we never received our pictured that were paid for. Personally, I am glad i didn’t have any expectation about our kids group as the entire group didn’t know their routine.

Was looking for an alternative to my normal yoga routine and decided to take up ballet at this nearby studio. Five months later, after both ballet beginner series 1 & 2, I’m still in love. Janicka and Whitney are both fantastic instructors looking to make the most of your time, while also having fun (important for a self-depracating adult taking beginner ballet).
Only thing taking away a star from my review would be the cleanliness of the studio. Bathrooms are always out of order and it’s never fun to walk out with dusty clothes and ballet slippers. BUT, I don’t know of many other cities that offer adult classes this great so I can’t complain. Highly recommend!

My daughter took ballet here before going somewhere else. I actually really loved her teacher, as a person, but not a whole lot of actual teaching seemed to be going on there. She also did not seem to be very tuned into my daughter, who was very shy. The owner was never very pleasant to be around, however, and I heard the same from other parents… She is basically a chill wind. I wanted to like this place because it was close to our home, but in the end, it was not a pleasant place to be, and we did not feel comfortable there.

I’ve been attending adult classes at CBD for about a month now. Their prices are very reasonable ($ 85 for an 8-week Ballet Basics class, for instance), and there’s a decent selection of classes for adults, including both technique-type classes (ballet, jazz, modern, etc) and more workout-focused classes. And there are also a variety of teaching styles, so you can find a teacher that suits you.
I’m not your typical slender, athletic ballet dancer, so I was initially nervous that I would be snubbed or feel like an outcast, but I’ve always felt welcome and supported in the beginner and workout classes (haven’t taken any intermediate/advanced classes yet).
I hope they will continue to expand their options in the evening/weekend time slots. Currently, some classes are only offered before 6 pm or only once during the week, which means that I can’t ever make it to those classes. But since they are mainly a dance school (rather than a fitness studio/gym), this will probably always be a struggle.
Be aware that the «amenities» are very basic — a small dressing room with bathrooms, no showers, no lockers. The dressing room is shared between adults and child students, so I always come dressed for class, because I don’t feel like I can count on having someplace private-ish to change.
Overall, I look forward to going to my ballet/barre classes every week, and my legs are getting so strong!

Love that there’s a whole community of adults looking to take classes, which is so nice! Instructors are great and I’ve met a lot of friends through classes, especially because there are so many regulars. Good selection of classes and I feel they’re really open to listening for feedback and creating a class schedule that fits people’s needs.
