Purple Rice — check Banchan — check(6 dishes — photo uploaded) Good Prices — check HANGOVER Dishes(soups) — check Cheap Soju Combos — check Authentic Korean Dishes — CHECK! The only negative is that the stew dishes take a while to prep(25 min). Upside is that it’s freshly made — negative if you’re super hungry. Be sure to call in advance if planning on ordering one of those dishes! Our Spicy Chicken Stew was a bit on the thick and salty side… But VERY tasty overall! Service was also pretty good for a Korean spot! Maybe cause I went with my parents lol. Overall it was a very good experience. Definitely a go-to Korean spot when in the Cypress area!

Went here morning for breakfast and got the Fish Cake Soup, it came with a bowl of purple rice and a lot of banchans(sides). The server was nice but was kind of off to the side since she was the waiter, cashier and cook. All in all ok the food was a little bland but I guess thats why they have the sides. The soup and one sprite came out to 12 $ plus tip. Would come here again.

Most authentic and satisfying Korean soups! Seriously sooo good. Large portions and amazing prices. Since the management changed, my family and I have been here multiple times and the food speaks for itself every time. Highly recommend this place if you are looking for the best Korean food in this area!!!

I’ve been here about 10 times since the ownership has changed late last year because the food and service is very good!!! Never a disappointment when I go there. I have eaten Naju Gomtang, Regular Gomtang, Bossam, Beef & Octopus Stew, Pork Kalbi, Yukgaejang, etc. and they are all VERY, VERYGOOD!!! This will be my regular spot for any occasion.

Best Korean soup restaurant in Cypress /Cerritos area. They are very consistent with quality of soup and banchan. Unless I goto LA K-town, this is the place when I crave for Koran soup with rice!

ALLTHEGOODREVIEWSAREFAKE! Gotta agree with Damien P. although his personal insults are not warranted. The food is decent but not something to forgive given the quality of service. Horrible horrible service. They need to hire more people instead of being cheap and trying to run everything with 2 – 3 people. One lady serves/cooks/cashiers. This is ridiculous. The biggest thing they need do to improve their situation is hire at least 2 more people.

Workers are really attentive, menu is great, and the food is cheap! If you’re looking to try out Korean food, this is the place. They changed owners a few days ago, so please be patient. :)

I have previously been to the hyun poong in LA and I was surprised to find out they opened one in my area!!! Hidden gem. Great comfort food just like how my grandma makes it ^^ service is great, it’s just difficult sometimes because some of them do not speak English too well. All in all five stars. I really recommend the bone soup or the deji boh sam! The owner is very nice and was excited to see me down at this one and gave me a lot of food he personally cooked up!

Without the Hyun & Gom, it would just only be Poong Tang Located at the former location of Happy House, Hyun Poong Gom Tang(HPGT) offers up Korean fare across from Forest Lawn in Cypress. Always on the hunt for new places to eat, I went into reviewer mode & came to see what HPGT has going on. 3 banchan plates & purple rice greeted me as I perused the menu. Naturally, for my first time here, I’d have to try their namesake gom tang– Simple, clean-tasting & elegant. Gom tang is a bowl consisting of hunks of beef & tripe with green onions in a hearty broth. A great hangover cure, from what I hear. No offending smell of tripe coming through the vapor, the soup was comforting to the soul. The portions of beef were tender & the tripe had a minimal amount of organ taste. One thing I found lacking was no heat. Not heat as in temperature or «Hey, you’re a hottie» heat, but spice level. I pulled a MacGyver & dumped the chili sauce from the banchan into my bowl of gom tang, immediately satisfying my heat tooth. Probably not the authentic way of consuming gom tang, but I enjoyed it. Not a filling dish in and of itself, sans noodles or vegetables, with purple rice & having a second helping of banchan does prove satiating. For only $ 9 including tax, not a bad deal. I asked if sikhe(Korean rice dessert drink) came after the meal, which I was told«not yet». C’est la vie! Service was good. The attendant knew some English for me to converse with her. She was surprised of my knowledge, albeit limited, of Korean cuisine. I did have to ask for something to drink, of which I had hot barley tea. Seating is available in booths, tables & a bar area. A private section which can accommodate around 20 people is available. Although, there is a drive-thru section because of the former tenant, Happy House, the window has been blocked off. Perhaps, the lane can be used for parking? Speaking of which, ample parking with Shinjuku Izakaya, a few florists & other businesses sharing the same plaza. 2 flatscreen TV’s with Korean programming for your viewing pleasure. HPGT has lunch specials, too. But, they’re in Korean only! D’Oh! Please translate for gringos like me, s’il vous plait! On a cloudy, cool, overcast day, a piping hot bowl of gom tang hit the culinary spot. Hyun Poong Gom Tang serves up Korean comfort food at affordable prices in a welcoming setting. Open early, I can definitely see myself coming back, perhaps for their soondae gook or galbi tang on another chilly day, warming up my bones with the delicious broth and a hot cup of barley tea. Highly recommend! NOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOMNOM

The first time I came here with my mom I got their house Gom Tang. It was pretty good and they gave a decent amount of meat, though I wish I got more. My mom got the Kalbi Tang and I thought that was pretty good too and due to the size of the meat and quality, I thought it was worth the price. But when I got the Oxtail gom tang… DON’T GETTHAT. They only give you three measly pieces of meat and before I asked the waitress if they give you a decent amount and she said yes, SHELIED. I was like WTH I paid $ 13 for this?! Uhuh no way. Don’t get the oxtail, get something else. Try the Gom Tang, it’s pretty good. Service is good too and they are very attentive to you. Regarding the side dishes, it is just kimchi and radish, at least that’s what we got. For these stew places, don’t expect too much on the side dishes. Overall it’s a good place to haejang(hangover cure) and if you’re feeling like soup this is a good place to go.

Clean, authentic, friendly, tasty, priced well… and lastly — grub! I don’t get this stuff that often but I know what good food is. Like kbbq joints they give you a few side dishes to go along with the meal, in this case — two types of kimchee and an onion cucumber salad. I got the beef and tripe soup with the pancake. Homemade and delicious. Filled me up for sure, the refilled my kimchee twice. I love kimchee! If I’m back out this way I will eat here again.

We ordered a pot dish with Korean beef and octopus. Very unsatisfied. The octopus was the size of my palm(I have pretty small hands). And there was only ONE of it. On the menu it seemed like the ratio of beef and octopus was half and half. Also, radish kimchi was one of the side dishes, and when I tried it, it had a strong fishy taste and smell. Not going back to this place again.

New Korean restaurant has just opened where ‘Happy House’ used to be. I had a chance to stop by for a quick lunch yesterday, and apparently they are preparing for a grand opening this weekend. Despite the fact the restaurant is not fully in operation, their service and the food was above average. I had ‘gom tang’(hot soup with various cuts of meat) with rice and tasty side dishes… all for less than $ 10 including a tip! I’m definitely coming back to try other items on their extensive menu!
