Fred Slater & Associates

My family and I have been going to Dr. Slater for many years in Cupertino. We always make sure we see Dr. Slater himself because he has a great personality and really takes care of his patients. I highly recommend Dr. Slater’s office and specially the doctor himself.

I was a patient with Dr. Slater my whole life. Never had any issues and always got good service. What happened?
I no longer live in the south bay but called Dr Slater to order contacts. It had been over a year since my exam so I couldn’t get any, which is understandable. I asked for 2 trial lenses and offered to pay for them.
I was told they were free. I offered to pay postage. I was told no. I advised the office I needed them urgently. I had already made an appointment with a new eye doctor in the area I now lived, but I had to wait almost a month.
I waited for the lenses and wondered why I had not received them. (A small priority mail box from the post office takes 2 days and I would have gladly paid the $ 5.80 for it.)
What I received in the mail after several days was a flimsy envelope that broke open and the left lens had been lost. I really couldn’t believe that fragile lenses were sent in this manner. The postmark indicated they were sent later than I was told. When I called the office to advise them of the situation the woman kept insisting, «We sent them when we said we did.» I guess it was a mistake on my part to bring this up, because she was very defensive about it. No apology for sending it in poor packaging and only denials about sending later than promised. I was definitely getting the impression that I was nothing more than a pain to them.
I asked for another lens to be sent in a secure package that would protect it from damage and offered to pay for priority or express. After I was left on hold for quite some time I was told they wanted to charge me $ 60 to send it. That sounded a little unreasonable to me and I asked to speak to one of the doctors. She told me there were no doctors there but I could call the next day and speak to Dr Slater.
I called the next day, asked for Dr Slater. He immediately told me he didn’t have time to speak with me and I should call back later. I asked, «What would be a good time?» He said he had patients all day until 5pm. I hesitated for a couple seconds and he said, «I don’t have time to talk to you» and he hung up on me. WOW.
I called back several times. I had another employee tell me they were very busy (without even asking why I was calling) and she hung up on me as well. Then I was left on hold for a long period of time. I guess they wanted me to give up. I finally got a woman who seemed willing to help me, then said, «Well i’m not in charge of that.» Really? She said she would have someone call me back.
I could almost understand it if I was rude or abusive, but I was just asking for help. ???
This is just a sad end to a long term Dr/​patient relationship. I don’t know what happened to that office. As someone who was in a customer facing business for years, I can’t imagine treating any of my customers like this. On top of that, I would think if it was a Dr/​patient situation that the standard of service or the standard of «care» would be even more important. I guess it was naïve to think that having a life-​long history with a business counted for anything. Perhaps because I was no longer a patient and they would no longer be making money off me they felt service no longer mattered.

I decided to come back to this office after almost 6 years since they are one of the few that accept our insurance and I forgot how awesome everyone is! We got glasses here for the whole family. Lisa has been amazing with me and extremely helpful! She was patient and kind and actually helped my son and I pick out our glasses. I would definitely recommend this office.

I agree with the other reviewers, this is an excellent office. I’ve been going here for the past six years and my experiences have been consistently positive. Dr Slater seems very knowledgeable, and did a great job identifying the ideal prescription for me. My vision feel sharper than in previous years, when my prescription wasn’t as fine-​tuned. I’ve run into Dr. Betty a couple of times she also seems friendly and professional.
The best part is the top-​notch customer service. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly. They make you feel very comfortable and go out of their way to help you out. I wasn’t sure if I was covered by insurance, and the staff member called three different companies to find out if I was covered… As it turns out, I was covered under one of the plans! So my exam and lenses were paid for.
They were patient with me when I selected my glasses, and walked me through different pricing and lens options… They offer a chic selection of frames in all styles, brands and price ranges, and are very patient as you make your selection. They’ve gone out of their way to help me find frames within my budget, and I’ve never felt pressure to upgrade or spend more than I was planning to.
Conveniently located in Vallco mall. Have helped me with all kinds of issues with my glasses… They adjusted my reading glasses (purchased at the pharmacy) at no charge… My regular glasses lost a screw and the arm got really wobbly. I popped in to ask if they could tighten it. Ryan was at the front desk. Not only did he fix it with a smile, but he looked up my record to see if it was covered under the warranty. Even though I was a month over, he contacted the manufacturer and they sent me a new frame! Thank you for going above and beyond to take care of your customers.

Excellent customer service! I got lenses put into my frames at another optometrist but they felt super uncomfortable. So I came here and asked them what the deal was… turns out my lenses were switched. Go figure. Even though I didn’t get my frames or lenses here, they happily switched the lenses for me and were super nice throughout the process. Thanks guys!

Had a very poor experience with one of a ‘non Slater’ Optometrist, she was rude, insistent on her idea and did not focus on the requests. Left the appointment in the middle, there are more qualified & helpful ones in the area

Was referred to this office from a fellow co-​worker who has been a loyal patient/​customer for 10+ years. Heard nothing but positive comments about their Drs & staff. Experienced it for myself when I had my eye exam today & I was truly satisfied throughout my ENTIRE visit. I was seen by Dr. Chun who was extremely patient, answered all of my qtns, & explained each procedure she was going to perform on my eyes BEFORE performing them. Her as well as her staff were super friendly, knowledgeable & professional. I would highly recommend this office to anyone looking to be seen by Drs who truly care about their patients. (Very cute name brand frame options as well.)

Still highly recommend this place. My Prada glasses lost a piece and was out of warranty, but the staff checked with the manufacturer and offered to order parts for me. I felt like they went above and beyond, given that I’ve bought from them before.
So although the glasses will require some other sort of repair, I was totally satisfied that they went out of their way to thoroughly check the warranty information and to find options for me.

They are awesome. I love the customer service. I never had issue they are the best.

New to the bay area and needed a checkup.
All I have to say is Dr. Betty Chun is awesome. She is easy to talk to and very patient.
I am very particular about my vision. I was not completely happy with the first set of contacts so Dr. Chun spent three weeks with me testing 4 different brands of contacts to achieve the best vision for me.
It just so happens that we ended up with the first pair of contacts she prescribed. I guess I am hard to please.
Definitely recommend Dr. Betty Chun, she knows what she is doing.

This review is for the stellar customer service I received (I had no appointment).
I was ambling through the «mall» in Cupertino and a pair of eyeglasses caught my eye. I walked into the store and a gentleman with a hipster mustache and a receptionist both greeted me and were very kind.
I saw a pair of Gucci frames I wanted and the nice guy went so far as to see if they had the frames in stock, and when they didn’t he called the manufacturer directly. He ended up telling me the frames were on back order and wouldn’t arrive until early April. He wrote down the style and model number and even offered to contact me when they came in.
He told me the optometrist’s office was open 7 days a week, handed me a business card, and told me to call back if I needed any help.
And that, ladies and gentleman, is top notch customer service.

I was referred by a friend so I had really high hopes — definitely lived up to the hype! Dr. Slater and his staff were extremely friendly and helpful. I initially went to Dr. Slater to get a second opinion on my eyeglass RX. My previous optometrist, who I’ve been going to the past 3 years, has given me 3 incorrect prescriptions, I felt. I wanted to get a second opinion. The first few tests before seeing Dr. Slater were quick, although I remember only taking 2 of these 3 preliminary tests at my previous optometrist. Dr. Slater was very personable and very knowledgeable. He was able to explain to me terms I’ve heard time and time again in a very understandable way. I remember thinking to myself, «Ohhhh I get it now!». He did a BUNCH of tests that the previous optometrist did NOT do and within the first 5 minutes diagnosed me with astigmatism in my left eye — in the last 3 years and 3 prescriptions prior astigmatism was NEVER brought up. He also wrote me a prescription for contact lenses and gave me a free pair of contacts along with solution. He really took the time to explain every little thing to me along with what the purpose of the tests he was performing were for. He is extremely knowledgeable! His office is also open 7 days a week and his staff tries to do their best to schedule your appointment even same day appointments.
I would for sure recommend Dr. Slater to anyone who needs an eye exam.

Dr. Fred Slater is an excellent eye doctor. He is patient, friendly, and made me feel very relaxed. Because of my insurance, I tried to go to «in plan» doctors, but they were never as good, or as informational about my eyes as dr. slater. I have –8.5 and –9.0 eyesight, and was beginning to have reading problems. He was able to recommend that I use one eye for reading and the other for distance, and I didn’t have to wear reading glasses anymore, yet I could still see well for distance. Also, I was having some significant allergy problems and he helped me with those issues as well. I feel confident that he has my best interest at heart when talking about Laser eye surgery with another «in plan» physician, and he also gave me other recommendations. He is just a wonderful doctor and caring. I’d recommend him to anyone.

This place is very friendly. I felt right at home. I felt a little nervous coming in as this was my first eye exam in years, but everyone made me feel at ease. Their selection of glasses was vast and i was able to find quite a few that i liked, unfortunatley i could only pick 1. I will b coming here for years now.

I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Slater and his very helpful staff! I came here to renew a prescription. The gentlemen who helped me (sorry I am really bad with names) was so helpful and knowledgeable. He assured me that he would help me find something like the frames I had. I was worried that I would not find frames that were as cute as the Dior glasses I already had. When I came for my appointment I saw almost a whole wall of just Dior frames. The gentlemen who assisted sat there with me as I tried on every single frame. He even pulled some Dior frames from the back that they just got in. Those were the ones I ended up choosing.
When I picked up my glasses they were perfect! I am so happy with my new frames. I am very impressed with the fashionable frames this store has. I will definitely be back to get my next prescription.
If you want a good optometrist who knows how to treat customers and a friendly staff, I highly recommend this store.
