Since I started working in Cumberland over ten years ago, this location has been a few restaurants, all nothing to review about until now, I actually stop eating seafood at restaurants because too many focus on profit, and are way over priced, when they should be focus on quantity an quality…
J Grays hit a homerun out the ball park last nite for my girlfriend and I. Scallops tender, portion perfectioness lol if there is such a word, and final bill…70.00 before tip which included drinks.

I’ve been here over a dozen times. Had good to great service every time. Only sit in bar area which is a nice atmosphere and set up. Big variety of beer and drink specials. Always had good food there, large portions.

This is a great place for you & your family to go for good, home made tasting food. Low key, casual atmosphere with friendly staff. Nice bar area as well for those times you decide to leave the kiddos at home. And they have a descent sized banquet room to accommodate those large gatherings too.
Prices are reasonable. Good sized portions. Something for everyone on the menu. Some stand outs include the beer battered Brie & the prime rib. Have never had to wait more than 10 minutes for a seat either
Only complaint so far, believe it or not, is with the dinner rolls. #1: they don’t bring them to you unless you ask; & #2: they’re those cheap-​o tiny buns similar to what you get at a Chinese restaurant; soft, cold, dense, & plain.

J Gray’s Family Tavern is very old school, in a good way. Walking inside I felt like I stepped back into the 1980s, and the restaurant was full of locals who looked right at home. The menu features a lot of pub-​comfort food — affordable and good. The service was very warm and the server worked to make us feel at home.
The food was not extraordinary but it was tasty and a great value — our bill came to less than $ 40 for 3 entrees. We brought our kids and J Grays had two levels of kids meals — one for little kids and one for bigger kids, featuring more grown up options.
Overall J Grays looks like it has been around for a while and earned a good reputation, and we enjoyed ourselves enough that we’ll be back at some point. Come for the old school Rhode Island charm, and stay for the steak tips.

Stopped by on a Wednesday for lunch as I was in the area for work and remember my friends James and Samantha always promoting it. The place is much nicer inside than it appears from the outside. I say at the bar and was created promptly by Jasmine. She asked my name right away which I thought was a nice touch. I ordered the chili to start and steak tips as my entrée. The chili came out super quick but was like warm at best. I loved it despite its big chunks of peppers and onions (typically not a fan). It had a slightly greater onion taste than normal chilies and included what appeared to be chorico… Excellent. Shortly after my meal came out. Steak tips were bore line cool (less hot than the chili) but had a good bourbon taste to them. While eating, Jasmine (addressing everyone by name) was asking all of the patrons (close to a dozen) how everything was. First class service from her. Bill was lower than expected. I’d give it another shot but I’d hope the food would be HOT (or at least warm) the next go around

Order nachos with chili!!! Wow at first i thought it lacked cheese but when we started digging into the mound of chips. It was loaded with cheese, chili tomato. Very yummy. My husband had the prime rib sandwich. Large roll but it was a good size piece of rib. And the French fries where very good. Service was a little slow but ok.

At first glance from the outside I was skeptical of this restaurant, but it was the classic case of don’t judge a book by its cover. Upon going inside there was a spacious bar area with plenty of TVs and high top tables. The separate area for dining in was quiet, and the servers were incredibly friendly. We were greeted by both the hostess and the manager, and he stopped by several times to see how our food was, and if we needed anything. It is so refreshing to see a nice local restaurant be everything you want to see in the service industry.
With a party of 5 people, we ordered dishes ranging from pasta, steamers, calamari, and steak. The steak dinners ranged from $ 15 – 18, and with it you got two sides and choice of soup or salad. For the amount of food, it’s a great value, and my steak was juicy and flavorful. My girlfriend’s step mother absolutely loved the steamers she got as well, and they gave her a small soup container to take the leftover sauce home with her.
My girlfriend and I will absolutely be back to sit at the bar and try the wings (which you can order by the 100 according to the menu).

All I can say is don’t judge a book by its cover! When we pulled in my wife and u where like oh god what did we get into! But you walk in and it all starts to change, we ordered the onion rings for an app perfect. We just finished our soup and salad they where so good salad was cold and crisp and the white clam chowder was perfect! You must stop in and you you won’t be disappointed. Trust me I have been a chef for the past 25 years!

I met up with two friends at J Gray’s and had never been before. From its exterior, it didn’t look like the greatest place, but I immediately loved the casual yet quality-​designed interior.
Although we were seated right away, we were not attended to often throughout the meal. It took one hour to receive two salads and a chicken dish. Luckily I was in good company so I barely minded.
The food was fantastic and the reason that I would go back again. I hope the service is much faster next time.

Since I’m biased towards Buffalo Mac and Cheese, this place gets 5 stars. For $ 11 you get a huge bowl of it… amazing! It made for dinner and lunch the next day. Perfect balance between cheese, buffalo sauce, Ritz toppings, etc.
We went on Wednesday, music trivia day. There was a fun vibe, maybe a little loud for a weekday in Cumberland, but fun. Good service, decent menu options. My buddy got the pulled pork quesadilla and said it was good.
I’ll be back, don’t even have to look at the menu!

Been here twice. Solid food, solid prices and clean. Food is definitely freshly prepped and cooked to order.

took the family the night before thanksgiving. The weather was terrible. There was no wait. big menu, decent kid selection. food was good. service was good. priced a little less than the chains.

Excellent food, service, drinks and specials. Only complaint is that some areas of the dining room Are a little too dark for my liking. Others may love that.

Second takeout order in a row that was incorrect. We will be order from another restaurant in the future.

Ordered take-​out from here only once, but found the food to be pretty tasty. Our order consisted of a couple of Lucas’ Combos, a Shaggy Burger, and a Venice Beach Salad w/​chicken. I have to say that salad is one of my favorites in the area. I look forward to trying this restaurant again.

This was probably one of the worst dinners I have had in Months !! My BF and I had a meal there and the food was terrible.
I ordered the Steak Tips Flatbread. The menu said grilled steak tips… but it came with BBQ sauce… The bread was chewy, the steak was dozed with a cheap BBQ sauce and horrible caramelized onions. I ordered the steak medium rare and it came well done… My BF got the California Girl Sandwich and it was burnt on the outside and bland on the inside. I took a bite and I had to spit it out !! We were with a group of people, it was loud and it was late, so we did not send food back… We decided, we are not coming back here …
Service was poor. The waiter was late with simple requests like water, ketchup, drinks, etc…
I respect the other reviews, but many people around might have low expectations. I cook a lot and it is not difficult to make something delightful and tasty out of a kitchen… Some friends that came with us had the prime rib and complained about being tough and not tasty. The buffalo chicken dip was a terrible bowl of cheese mixed with cheap tabasco sauce with stale chips. What a waste of time !!

If you are looking for a casual place for a good meal, great service, and reasonable prices… look no further! We ate in the bar area so my husband and son could watch the game. Very clean and comfortable and a good beer selection. I especially enjoyed sitting in front of the fireplace on such a cold night! Large menu with lots of choices. Sandwiches, salads, steaks, seafood, etc. Everything was good, but the Brie appetizer was a standout for me! Delish!

This place is great! Good food, good people, good beer, good beer.
I usually get the nachos ($ 6) for my meal, or the pulled pork quesadilla ($ 9) and the usuall Narragansett draft ($ 2). I’ve also had the huge pastrami and the spicy ruben, both are good.
My favorite meal is the Country Fried Chicken. Extra crispy, nice thick grayy, and the potatos are great about the
The best part is the fries, these are amazing!
I am probably going to go there tonight because of me writing this.

We’ve gone to J Gray’s a few times now and it’s a decent restaurant, with inconsistent service. The first trip was a great experience, with an excellent waiter, hot and delicious food. The second trip, the food was okay, but the quality of the salad was poor and the service was slow and not overly attentive. Our last trip there, some of our food was fantastic and some of it was meh. The waiter seemed more interested in watching the baseball game in the bar than checking on our food and beverages.
We were really excited about this restaurant when after our first visit, but now I am not sure if we will return. Its a bummer, because we were really excited to have a new «tavern» style restaurant in town.

The Friday specials of fish & chips or clam cakes & chowder are totally worth it. Menu is full of bistro-​style dishes.
Oh, and the margaritas are pretty good.
