The first time I witnessed a Steadicam operator in action, I was struck with complete fascination. I became obsessed with Steadicam once I realized all of the possibilities it possessed. The operator has the ability to control the spacial movement of the camera and the composition, all at once. A skilled operator executes complex camera moves with precision, tight headroom, and level horizons. Perhaps the most intriguing part of my job on set is finding what role the camera plays in the story. It is easy enough to just move the camera from point A to point B, but moving the camera with a purpose is incredibly satisfying. I have found from experience that the best operating has a seamless, invisible quality to it. It is invisible because the story drives the camera movement. The camera expresses an idea, it connects with your emotion.
