The ribs were dry. The place was small so although there weren’t very many patrons it felt like a full house. The sauce was sort of chalky and the customer service was poor. I won’t be going back to this joint.

JR’s BBQ was such an experience! From the lovely people and service we received, to the perfectly cooked and seasoned meat, JR’s had it all! There was a feeling of home right when we walked in, and we were immediately greeted! We were there to pick up a very large catering order which came out at the perfect time. The gentleman working there rung us up and even helped us load everything into our car, and wished us a beautiful weekend! The office party was a huge success as everyone wanted to know where we got this amazing bbq from. Thank you Ms. Jackson and JR’s for the most wonderful experience from start to finish. –Casey from Zoic Studios

I always passed by this place but it took me a couple of years to actually order from it. I was not disappointed. All of the meat fell of the bone. The taste was sweet with a «twangy» after taste. I couldn’t stop eating the pulled pork, even after three ribs. As for sides, I wasn’t too impressed. The beans were okay, but I wish there were greens or other vegetables to consume.

Joan and I discovered JR’s when we were doing The Food Show on KABC just up the street from JR’s on La Cienega Boulevard. The wafting aroma of smoked meats filtered through the air conditioning inside our studio. That aroma drew in again this Saturday when I was driving by and stopped for lunch. It is an independent, whole-in-the-wall restaurant. There are not frills, but plenty of flavor thrills. I know I always get great food and attentive service when Robert(the owner) is there. I have seldom been disappointed. This week I had the beef ribs and beef sausage and they were both delish. My partner had the brisket and the pork ribs. I think ‘mom” still bakes all the deserts and they are really great. The entrée plates were and always are abundant – we always take home a doggy bag. I bought an extra quart of BBQ beans and coleslaw. only because the bean are the best in LA. This is a place that I can safely recommend to anyone on the west side looking for good barbecue.

Want to ensure I never come back? Put 2 magic words on your menu: «no substitutions.» The client is never right! I won’t return, and I haven’t even taken a bite of food yet.

Just finished dinner there, and I’ll definitely be going back. Falling-off-the-bone beef ribs, dense & moist corn muffin, tasty homemade potato salad, dense & moist sock-it-to-me cake… done right, Memphis-style, and with a heaping side of Southern hospitality. They tend to slather on the sauce, but you can order it light sauce, or on the side. Didn’t give 5 stars because the rib ends were a little dry(no, that wasn’t the bark — — the bark on the middle of the ribs was juuuuust right), and the potato salad serving was a little small. But the corn muffin and the sock-it-to-me cake were stand up and shout — — the cake was a stand-alone piece baked(not served) in its own tin. That meant it had a little delicious crisp all around the edge. The service is a bit casual: it seems like a family owned & operated place, so staff is born, not hired. But they do care, and the friendliness and concern are genuine. No question long-time customers seem to get a little more love. But then again, it’s not hard to become like a long-time customer. Go when you have time, or call in your order, ‘cuz it’s not like staff got trained with a timer. But they did get trained with hospitality and making sure you’re pleased with your order.

Memphis Style Bbq at it’s best. Outstanding fall off the bone cooking on their amazing juicy ribs, so tasty it will become your favorite spot in no time. Then, the house BBQ sauce is the stuff every foodie dreams about. Simply packed with an amazing flavor so intense you’ll buy a jar to take home at every visit. All of it combined with a friendly, welcoming atmosphere makes you feel you are home.

Saw this on on thrillest and was on the best BBQ list right above Phil’s BBQ(whose beef ribs are awesome) in San Diego, so I thought the list had some credibility. Had business on the other side of town that made it on my way home, so I said why not. When I got there the walls were litered with critical reviews and actor pics, which got me excited. I ordered to go and got a small order of baby back ribs, family pack of the pork ribs and a pound of the beef brisket. I also got corn, cornbread, dinner rolls, bbq beans and potato salad. Made sure I tried everything, order was $ 85. Got home and opened the containers; everything was drenched in bbq sauce. The pork ribs were tender, the meat came off easily without a knife. But there was little to no bark. The meat had the same color consistency throughout, no smoke ring. I couldn’t tell the difference between the pork and the baby backs. The beef brisket was mush, I am not sure how you can destroy a brisket like that. Whole foods has better brisket than this place. BBQ beans were good, tasted like Bush’s baked beans. Potato salad was pretty good. The best thing on the menu was the cornbread, tasted like old school kfc cornbread, but my meal was so bad, the cornbread was the best thing?

«Cockroach TIME!!! «(not even a star) Please please think twice coming here. It’s not a healthy place to eat here Today is the 02/22/2016 — 7:00pm my brother and I came to have dinner at this restaurant. We are regulars here, out of the sudden a big FATRED cockroach(1.5 inches long and I’m not kidding) was walking around my plate. We told the server about it, he tried to find it but no luck. After 10 more minutes the cockroach came back and the server got it this time. The worse part of this is was that he didn’t apologize for the lack of sanitation or even make a discount of gesture, I was not looking for any free stuff but just to be fair! An apology is enough. But he decided to charge for everything. No sorry No eye contact The worse part is that he pretended that it was common there because he continue doing his things. Sad…very sad! Not coming back for sure!

I’m typing this up as my husband is still at JR’s after nearly TWOHOURS waiting on our to-go order! This is bad management and bad customer service to the max. They have given him no update on our order and haven’t offered to refund our money. Avoid this place.

I found myself chugging along through Culver City traffic, feeling«hangry», and then, like a bastion of smoked meats, saw JR’s out of the corner of my eye and immediately stopped. I’d been meaning to eat here for a while anyway. Simple seating inside, with a diner-style circular counter in front and additional seating in an adjacent room. Since no one was there(two hipster chicks were standing inside but left upon learning there was no fried zucchini that day) I grabbed a spot at the diner bar and looked over the menu. As far as BBQ joints go, this place had all of the usual meaty offerings. I was short on time and my stomach commanded me to make a quick order. One beef brisket sandwich with a side of baked beans ought to do the job. The food came out in less time than it took me to pull out my phone and act like I had to do something important on it, lest I be expected to simply sit idly by and think or feel. One big sandwich, with meat spilling out the sides, sitting in a pool of rich medium-hot sauce. My beans had their own separate containment area, as the plates they use are the kind my mom had for me when I was five. But I dug it. Claude have mercy, the beef brisket is no joke. Insanely succulent, brimming with bold flavor and so very savory. I’m fairly certain I didn’t chew any of my bites, preferring the faster method of simply inhaling the entire foodstuff. Seriously, I wolfed that thing down in about 37 seconds flat. Any fallen meat was mixed up with the sauce, added to the beans and swiftly jammed into my mouth. The beans, by the way, are super tasty and contain chunks of meat, too. All beans should be made this way. And with that, I had to run. I was out the door, fully satisfied, with my wallet a mere $ 15.00 lighter including tip. So worth it.

My husband and I visited JR’s BBQ on Friday the 13th, 2015. I swear that Jason Voorhees was the chef and Freddy was the server… All jokes aside, we have NEVER been so disrespected in our entire lives, while visiting a restaurant establishment. The service had NO courtesy or consideration. When we arrived, my husband(who is disabled) asked for a glass of water. They made us wait a considerable amount of time for a simple request like that. We felt ignored because we saw JR greeting many customers while overlooking us. After that, we ended up waiting about 15 minutes at the counter for them to take our order. We ended up ordering takeout: A turkey sandwich w/1-side for $ 10.50, An open rib sandwich w/1-side and a roll for $ 11.50 and 2 lemonades for $ 6.00. The total $ 30.66…While waiting for our order, we had the opportunity to observe what other customers were eating. Their plates looked so FULL and delicious. Everything looked so appealing, which made us anticipate our orders even more. After about 15 more minutes, we received our food to go and the bag felt really light… That was a REDFLAG. When we got home and opened the bag, we were shocked at the amount of food and poor quality. First of all, the turkey sandwich was pathetic. It was a DRY raggedy bun with PROCESSED smoked turkey that included a small cup of BBQ sauce on the side. The open rib sandwich consisted of 3 small bones with drizzles of sauce on each one, a side of flavorless potato salad and a roll. Our lemonade was not fresh squeezed, it was clearly made from a concentrate or powder and loaded with ice. Disappointment, disappointment, disappointment… If we hadn’t been so tired from taking care of business that day, we would’ve taken back these over-priced, pitiful meals. Why is there such a HUGE disparity between dinning in and takeout? This whole experience brought me to anger and tears. I was extremely upset about the service, quality and treatment. We will not be returning to JR’s BBQ again.

I tried this place out on accident today. Turned out great! I had their pork tips with baked beans and corn muffin. Ughhh the mild sauce on the pork was to die for ! And the beans was a bonus, and you can’t go there without trying their corn muffin. Best one I had by far. The service was very sincere. She was caring and was one step ahead of what we needed at all times. Well, that’s how it’s suppose to be. The only complaint I have is she messed up on my order but to my boyfriend he didn’t hear me clearly either so I guess that’s really a huge problem. Lol Overall, this place is great !

Though JR’s looks small from the outside, it’s actually quite spacious on the inside! I came here for lunch one day for a co-worker’s birthday. Love that it’s walking distance from my office! Although I didn’t have to drive here, I did see plenty of parking spaces in front. They are well known for their barbecue sauce, which they also sell in jars for you to take home! Prices are decent for a lot of food. Service was great also! Our waitress was so helpful and attentive. Co-workers got the Pulled Pork Sandwich with the barbecue sauce on the side. Both said the sandwich was really good. Because I don’t eat red meat, I ordered the Atlantic Salmon Burger which came with Lettuce, Tomatoes, Onions, mayo, mustard, and ketchup on a toasted bun. Not bad. I chose potato salad as my side and it was really yummy. Come at 12 or earlier, the place gets packed!

The barbecue here isn’t bad, but it’s just not excellent. After church one Sunday, a friend suggested that we go to JR for a little barbecue. He had been there before and highly recommended it. With both of us being from the South, we know how barbecue should be, so I was looking forward to trying it(despite the middle of the road rating). Arriving late on a Sunday morning, we were the first customers in the restaurant. Our lovely server came to the table promptly, asked for our drink orders and brought out some water to start. I knew that I wanted to try a few of the meats so we split the three meat combo($ 18) with two orders of baked beans, rolls, and sweet tea. The food came out fast. I always wonder if it’s pre-cooked when it comes out that fast but barbecue is usually slow cooked and therefore, I would expect it to be ready when you order it. So, in this case, I was ok with the speediness of the food. Since we requested different sauces, we got the meat«dry». Being from Memphis, there’s always the question of «wet» versus«dry». Without dousing the meat and sauce, it really gives you a chance to taste both the meat and the sauce alone. The pork ribs were tender but not very juicy. There was a mild smoky flavor to them which was satisfying. The brisket was a little dry and the rib tips tasted very similar to the pork ribs although they were fatty. I got the mild sauce and it was pretty good. It was thin enough to pour on the meat and it had just a hint of spiciness. After we ate our meal, we both wanted dessert. I got the sock-it-to-me cake! I have not seen it on a menu outside of the South so I was so excited to taste it. It was good. Really good. The soft butter cake had a cinnamon streusel and pecan filling and it was topped with a white glaze. That, with my vanilla ice cream made my day! The walls at JR are decorated with autographed headshots of celebrities from Bobby’s catering days. Having been open for over 17 years, it seems as though JR’s still has a following. They certainly do some things well. But, I would recommend passing on the rolls, the sweet tea, and the brisket. Get that cake though!

Stopped by on our way to LAX for a quick lunch. This is a great spot for authentic barbeque. The pork ribs, beef and chicken links, corn bread, brisket and sauce are the bomb! The portions are large and the price affordable. The staff is super friendly, nice and very attentive. The only downside is the parking. They have a small parking lot of about 5 – 6 cars, if you are unlucky to miss any of these spots, you’ll have to park on the street and walk to the restaurant. Sometimes the restaurant is packed and you’ll have to wait for an empty table. Avoid the rush hour lunch crowds. The food is so good, everyone comes here for lunch!

On our way to Purgatory Pizza by Little Tokyo, my husband was craving ribs. We live by Culver City, heading our way to the 10, he remembered the ribs from Jr’s. Parked at their lot(limited parking space), you can smell the bbq as you approach the restaurant. Once inside, we were immediately acknowledged and greeted. Made our way to the tables in the back and waited till our server came our way. We were ready to order! My husband ordered the family pack of beef ribs(7 ribs total), 2 large side orders, 4 soft buns, beef link, another order of 4 more soft buns(we sure love our buns), 7up cake and house cobbler. Grand total of $ 52.00. Not bad for a family of 4(2 growing boys, by the way). We all ate our ribs and links with our baked beans(so good) and potato salad. I really can’t wait to go back!
