So what do you do when the water heater at your vacation cabin stops making hot water? You look up the local repair guys in town to call for help. Well, when the biggest 2 shops are too busy and can’t come for a day, who do you call next? I got a recommendation to call G.H. Heating, a one-​man heating/​AC repair service based out of the Crystal Falls/​Amasa area in da UP.
Owner Gary Hanttula is a nice Finnish guy who will go out of his way to help you. He came out in less than 2 hours and got the water heater up and running with a new heating element. Just a day later, the unit conked out again, apparently for another reason.
We were not going to stay long, as our weekend was over and we were heading back home after a weekend trip. I called Gary on the way back to Chicago and told him what happened. Since we would not be back for 2 more weeks, Gary arranged to come to our cabin on the day we arrived for our next trip. Sure enough, he was there on time, exactly as expected. Now how many heating repair guys would do that? Turns out, the thermostat also was going bad and needed replacing. Since he said it was something he should have checked the first time, Gary did not charge for coming out and gave us a discount since he had to come back a second time. Just 20 minutes later the hot water was flowing again and I am happy to say I got him on my short list of good people to know in Iron County for any furnace or water heater repair work needed.
