Jiffy Lube

Bought the Groupon for a standard oil change. Of course I was tried the up-​sell to synthetic or synthetic blend. I refused, said I just wanted what the manufacturer recommends in the owners manual, 5w30. I was told that my car required synthetic oil according to their computer and it would only be 19.99 more. I tried to explain to her that the computer is recommending synthetic if the vehicle is operated in conditions under –29*. She didn’t understand. Again I said I just wanted 5w30. She finally relented after trying to sell me an air filter. No thanks. And don’t get your hopes up on a vacuum, windows cleaned and tire pressure check either. I did get the oil changed, and I needed it so that’s the 2^nd star. Oh yea, they didn’t re-​set the oil change monitor either. Stay away if you don’t know about cars and are not ready to fight for what you want.

The bathroom is disgusting. There was a piece of feces on the floor. Service was okay. Very dirty place.

PLEASE FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU AGAINST THIS JIFFY LUBE! YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE ANY COMMUNICATIONS FROM ANY EMPLOYEE OF JIFFY LUBE IF YOU SIMPLY CALL AND KEEP CALLING.
Work performed caused potential life threatening disaster!
I purchased my Escape brand new in June 2010. With that came a 2-​year service contract. Because I only need routine maintenance every 6 mos, Ford performed that maintenance 4x (Dec 2010, June 2011, Dec. 2011, June 2012). Although my next oil change was due Dec. 2012, I didn’t have it done until Jan. 13, 2013. I took my car to Jiffy Lube (J.L.) in Crestwood, IL, where the tech told me it’s about time to get a new air filter. He showed me my old one and I agreed. I happily paid for all services AND gave a tip.
In Sept 2013 (Sun.) I went back to the same J.L. to get my oil changed again. Inv. No. 2982 7 392 392; Bay 2. There, the technician showed me my air filter (as they always do, whether they recommend getting a new one or not) and expressed his surprise at how clean it was since getting it 8 months prior. We both agreed I didn’t need a new one but he was somewhat nervous and confused but I just brushed his demeanor off as being surprised.
That following Wednesday I was driving to work (downtown Chicago) and after more than ½ way there, I stopped at a red light and my car died. I started it (it started right up, no problem) and drove to the next light and it died again and again, etc. It started each time w/​out problems or hesitation. I parked my car on Columbus Dr. and went into the office. I waited a couple of hrs before going down to check my oil in case J.L. forgot to put the oil back IN it. Oil was full and clean. BUT, at this time, I noticed that NONE of my other fluids were ‘topped off,’ a promise J.L. makes as their ‘signature oil changes.‘
As I left work, I prayed I wouldn’t have problems, prayers which were unanswered as I IMMEDIATELY had problems trying just to get out of my parking spot (parallel parked on the street). It took me SIX TRIES to get out of my spot because my car died EVERY TIME after I was only able to move it a couple of inches at a time.
I was finally able to drive. When I got the the first stop light, my car died… then the next, etc. Now I’m on Lake Shore Drive stopping at light after light, my car dying the entire time. Lake Shore Drive to I-​55 to the Dan Ryan Expressway (⁹⁰⁄₉₄). There was bumper to bumper traffic immediately getting on the Dan Ryan which, by the way, is one of the most DANGEROUS expressways in the United States! My car just kept dying (I’d say a good 60 – 75 times the entire way). Thankfully a friend of mine caught up to me and drove behind me with his hazard lights on to caution other drivers. I realized that my car would die if it went under 2 RPMs so I basically had to drive with my foot on the gas AND brake at the same time! THEN I started putting my car in neutral and coasting with my foot on the gas then throwing it into drive doing what is known as «neutral drops» which is HORRIBLE for a cars transmission!
I made it to the Ford dealer where I left my car. The next day Ford called me and told me the cause of my car troubles was the air filter was too small which caused ALL the dirt and junk to go up into my ENGINE. It THEN occurred to me WHY the last tech at J.L. was confused… he KNEW what happened and CONTINUED to let it happen! I went back to J.L. to try to talk to the manager and he pulled up BOTH invoices (Jan and Sept) and saw that my air filter was, in fact, changed in Jan. but he couldn’t print me a copy of the Jan. invoice. He DID try and even let ME try and it just would NOT print. He apologized and gave me the regional manager’s info: Demoine Harvey (708) 600‑4416. I gave this info to my atty who called Mr. Harvey. The two of them had several conversations over a period of 2 wks ending with Mr. Harvey telling my atty he would call me directly and discuss reimbursement of the mis-​sized air filter AND Ford’s fees to FIX J.L.‘s MESS.
Mr. Harvey did not call me. I told my lawyer I would file a complaint with the BBB and if this doesn’t work I’ll go to court. Mr. Harvey is a poor excuse for a Regional Manager.
I filed my complaint (above) with the BBB and low and behold, Mr. Harvey decided to call me. I was told that I would receive a refund of the charges from Ford and a refund of the mis-​sized air filter. I sent Mr. Harvey an email (
) attaching my invoice from Ford with a note stating that I haven’t decided whether I wanted to round up a group of people and file a class action lawsuit against Mr. Harvey and Jiffy Lube. Mr. Harvey completely pacified me which may have lit the match to a freshly beginning fire.

I have had oil changes done at various jiffy lubes in the Chicago-​land area, and this is by far the worst experience to date. First, if a customer asks how long the wait is and how long the oil change process will take, it is customary to provide a realistic number. Don’t say the wait is 15 minutes and the oil change will take 8 minutes when it ends up being almost a 2 hour total process. Second, honest business practices include talking to the customer PRIOR to starting to work on the car about the services that will be provided and costs associated. They emptied out the oil from my car prior to talking to me about what I was looking for, and then quoted me a $ 100+ oil change. What? I have never paid $ 100 for an oil change and my car runs beautifully. I told them that this is unacceptable, and we negotiated a lesser oil for $ 80. I was basically forced into doing the oil change because they had already taken all the oil out of my car. I was not able to leave and reject the service completely. Terrible business practices. Terrible customer service. I recommend that you STAY AWAY from this location at all costs. I was completely taken advantage of.
