History

Established in 1912.

Arthur Murray Dance Studios began in 1912, when a young man named Arthur Murray-one of 5 children born in New York City to Austrian immigrants-began teaching ballroom dancing at night while working as a draftsman by day. He soon was able to popularize himself by promoting his dance skills on the radio.

In 1925, Arthur Murray founded studios where he came up with a method which could teach anyone to dance.

On April 24, 1925, Mr. Murray married his famous dance partner, Kathryn, whom he met while broadcasting a dance lesson at a radio station in New Jersey. As business continued to grow, Mr. Murray and Kathryn became the first to realize that Latin dances were blooming during the 1950’s, so they held many conventions in Cuba to give Arthur Murray teachers first-hand knowledge of the new Latin styles.

When Arthur and Kathryn Murray retired in 1964, a group of franchisees purchased the company and brought a new outlook, style, spirit and leadership to the Arthur Murray studios.
