A little hole in the wall! A co worker had told my husband about it so went there and I was thinking where in the world are we going? The Food was amazing, start with the pretzel and beer cheese! The Brats and potato pancakes were awesome and the Pork Snitzel was really good! Saw the Burgers and they looked awesome too! There was a great band there playing to and the workers were great! You order at the Bar and they bring it to your table! We will definitely go back. I want to stop in and pick up a few pretzels to take to the Reds games with me! One $ 5 pretzel there you would have to get about 5 to equal the size at the ballpark.

We were so excited to try everything! And I mean everything that caught our eye — until we were more than full.
We ordered so much food on our first trip and marveled delightedly that with 3 beers, an order of perogies, a twelve dollar burger (with brussels sprout side), pretzel with beer cheese, side of sauerkraut, side beet salad, and a side of mustard with tip came to just over 50 dollars. Try and beat that at Haufbrau!
I was impressed with the beat salad, the beer cheese sauce, and the perogies (add mustard and order the sauerkraut to go along with it. Totally makes the dish and cuts through a lot of the heaviness). Please note, the perogies are not made in house. But they are totally one of the more delicious things we had there.
I wasn’t really bowled over with the pretzel. While it was soft inside it was really hard outside. Almost like it had sat around all day then got reheated. What a disappointment! So many people love it! To be fair it did come out so hot it was burning my fingers to touch it. Perhaps it was overcooked the night we went there? Though I did note that on a shelf in the kitchen (which you can see into when you go to the bathroom) I could see already cooked pretzels. Maybe they do precook and reheat? If you’ve ever made a pretzel you know you need to simmer them in soda baking laced water prior to baking. I could see that taking a while at a bar.
The other deflated moment, but still got mostly eaten … the build up to and the presentation of the brussels sprouts. By presentation I mean burnt. The great taste, I’m guessing to normally, is all the butter. I also thought I detected bacon fat. But the unmistakable burnt char, read NOT blackened in a good way — just plain tasted bitter.
My boyfriend was fairly full but still managed to take down half of the kitchen sink burger. I tried to take enough pictures to do it justice.
I know there’s usually music here but the night we went (on a week night) there was karaōke! Really nice guy running it.
I also want to point out that this place seems to be a local favorite, as if you can’t tell by the reviews of all the fellow Unilocalers! The bar was constantly packed. An annoyance a bit if you want to order because you have to go up to the bar to do that, but the people squatting don’t seem to mind you breathing over their shoulder to get another beer or side for your meal. Plus it totally helps that the bartenders are used to this so they are super attentive.
All in all, the food was great. The ambiance down to Earth and friendly. The women bartenders were attentive. And the communal seating is enjoyable.

Unless you are interested in buying shots for the bartenders in order to get service or even noticed, don’t come here. We even sat at the bar for dinner and we were ignored. Oh, that on top of dinner that I could have made at home for a fraction of the price. When you have sauerkraut at a restaurant I am expecting something special about it. Not taken directly from a jar and barely warmed up. All of the sausages tasted the same. Even the brussel sprouts, the current trendy veggie, were nothing special. Big disappointment!

Highly recommend coming here. Wunderbar has a great selection of local beers and has some of the best German food I’ve ever had. I was in Cincy for a week and ended up going to Wunderbar twice because I wanted to try everything off the menu.
Wunderbar has the best and largest hot pretzel you will ever eat (get with beer cheese), and makes unreal sausages from scratch. I believe their sausages change daily. Curry, garlic pepper, and Thanksgiving (believe turkey, stuffing and cranberries were in it) were some of the flavored sausages I had. Wunderbar’s bacon and beer cheese pierogies would be on my last supper request, along with their crispy, sautéed brussel sprouts. The atmosphere is somewhat hipstery and the pub itself is small but this place is killing it.

I was really happy with the food! Portions were fair for the price. The sausages were fantastic (warning handmade sausage has a different texture than processed sausage does I had a friend from out of town go with me and he was not prepared for this)!!! The not 5 stars is due to the lack of a beer selection, they have beer just not as many as I would have liked!

Great beer and German fare was top notch. Seemed like a nice neighborhood bar where everybody knows your name.

Great German pub in Covington! I went for lunch today with my lady and we had the bacon and brie sandwich and the turkey, bacon, goat cheese sandwich with brussel sprouts and bacon slaw as our sides. The bread was so thick and tasty! Also the slides were delicious! We waited a little while on our food but that may have been because we get there late in the lunch rush. Overall super great bar and will definitely be coming back!

Very cool laid back place! Great beer, pretzels, sausages and burgers! Sunday night jam sessions are a lot of fun. We’ll be back!!!

One of my favorite places in the Northern Kentucky area. It looks like a hole-​in-​the-​wall place, but that’s part of its charm. The bartender was SUPER friendly, the beers are spot-​on with many different bottle options and a few good beers on tap. The food was also awesome! German food is their specialty, and while the menu is more limited, the food is wonderful. Make sure not to forget to get the pretzel with beer cheese (I ordered it as a meal, and couldn’t eat it all, definitely big enough for at least two people to eat), and the curry brat was awesome. They also have homemade pies that sounded awesome, but we didn’t have any more room. Will definitely go back!

WHOA. This place is not much on ambience but holy hell do they make a stellar burger. I seriously think this was the best burger I have had in YEARS if not ever. The bartender was funny as hell and though most of their taps were out, they still had solid bottled beer selection to choose from. This joint is in a very tucked away corner of Covington but its totally worth finding. The roasted brussell sprouts and sauteed zucchini were really awesome sides, but with the variety they had on offer, you really can’t go wrong!

Wunderbar has become a new favorite spot. I have a friend who lives very near by, and he always appeared to camp out at this bar. I’ve recently come to appreciate why he likes it so much.
Environment: Wunderbar is rather small and even though you may get hit by some cold air in the winter when someone opens the front door, there is something really cozy and warm about this place. They have open seating and then picnic tables if you don’t want to sit at the bar. Nothing fancy but a unique, casual, and fun environment.
Food: The food is awesome. The first time I ever came, I had the Doner Kabob. It’s like the German version of the gyro. It’s delicious and filling and fairly inexpensive. I am not a huge burger fan; however, I’ve watched many a person down a huge burger… and quite frankly, a life goal of mine is the kill a Kuchenspule (kitchen sink) burger in 2 minutes without barfing. We’ll see if that happens. Regardless, the BEST thing to get at Wunderbar is the pierogies. They’re A-​M-​A-​Z-​I-​N-​G. You definitely will feel a heart attack coming on by the end, but I’m telling you. it’s worth it.
Drinks: They don’t do fancy here. Instead they serve strong cocktails, draft beer, and the cheapest PBR around. PBR, you say? Don’t judge. It’s $ 1.25. Beat that.
Music: They always have some sort of live music or comedy going on. Now I am not so sure about the comedy acts. I don’t handle awkward well and when people start bombing, I am running for the door, but I’ve heard some really great music here. My favs are the bluegrass bands, but they’ve always got something different going on.
So if you’ve never heard of this place or you’ve heard people talking about it but have never taken the time to come, check out Wunderbar. It’s a Covington fav.

I visited this place last night for the first time. My friends and I were in the mood for some karaōke! I reside in Covington now, so this place was rather close by. I liked the casual neighborhood feel of this bar. Our beers were good, too. What sucked was that they were completely OUT of their big pretzels & beer cheese! And I wasn’t really in the mood for much else on their menu. This place is also rather small for hosting a Karaōke Night. It was crowded and I felt cramped. The audience blew hot & cold — which was unfortunate, since I enjoy an enthusiastic crowd. They did wake up though and applaud for my friend and I once we finished singing «Alone» by Heart! So that was nice.
This wasn’t a top notch experience. But I did enjoy myself and would visit again.

I wanted to write an update on this place, since my last one was pretty short. I stopped in last night with the lady friend for dinner. I highly recommend going on a Sunday night. It was open mic night and the talent there was incredible. It wasn’t too crowded and we were able to get a seat at the bar and enjoy the different types of artists that were playing there that night. I typically get some type of sausage plate but last night I got the turkey, bacon and goat cheese sandwich served on a pretzel bun. It was incredible. As always, the girls working were great and the beer selection was on point. If you haven’t gone yet, definitely plan on it soon!

This restaurant is a mix between a Gastro Pub & German Tavern.
The food is excellent plus they have a great beer selection and very friendly staff.
We’ll definitely be back

My boyfriend and I were making an eclectic feast for dinner. We decided to run over to Wunderbar and order some take out. We only ordered a couple of items to add in the German influence to our menu.
We ordered the perogies and brussel sprouts. Holy moly those were the best perogies I’ve ever had. The cheese, the bacon, the texture was out of this world. Just remember since they are potato based they are quote filling, we shared an order and it filled us both.
Now I definitely have to go back and order some sausage and a pretzel.

Wunderbar ist wunderbar!
When one goes to a German bar, there are a few expectations that need to be met:
First, there has to be good German beer. Though limited in beer selection (and even more so when referencing German beer specifically), Wunderbar managed to pick the right styles — such as kolsch, hefeweizen, and amber lager.
Second, there needs to be good sausage. Kielbasa, Currywurst, Bratwurst, Garlic & Pepper Sausage, and more were all available.
Third, good mustard needs to be on hand. Indeed, a quality mustard with whole mustard seeds was on hand (by request). Not too spicy, not too sweet — but enough oomph to compliment any sausage.
Extra Credit: An excellently prepared giant soft pretzel. Better still, well prepared beer cheese! While I’ve been to a few «German» beer festivals that cheaply offer canned nacho cheese and French’s mustard to accompany a giant pretzel, Wunderbar would never stoop to that level. Man, I love good beer cheese. That’s what’s up.
All of that said, we did deviate from the plan ever so slightly. I went in wanting to do German, but quickly went Polish. What can I say? I love kielbasa. My wife loves pierogi. We ordered what we both loved.
*Bold Statement Alert* — Best. Pierogi. Ever. My wife thought so. I thought so. Absolutely secured the five stars. Unfortunately, they were not made in house. Though procured from Babushka Pierogi, Wunderbar did jazz them up a bit with a gouda cheese sauce and bacon. Freakin’ awesome!
I ordered the «Bacon Slaw» as my side. Meh. Though it was mostly cabbage and bacon, it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting. This was perhaps the one blemish in an otherwise enjoyable meal.
A quick word about the setting: Wunderbar is certainly a dive bar, placarded with typical beer signage and bits of German memorabilia. The coolest feature was the front end of a VW Bus. Far out, man. Aside from bar stools at the bar, a long communal table was available for patrons to dine at and drink.

What a great place to stumble upon. The pub, spattered with colorful Bavarian décor and American microbrew signage, is located in Covington, KY, just across the river from Cincinnati.
Their menu manages the oft difficult to achieve balance between simple and diverse. It includes several sandwich options — reuben, turkey/​bacon/​goat cheese, fried green tomato BLT — a burger section, and their featured sausages, rounded out by an expansive list of side items.
Orders are placed at the bar, where you have the choice to stay or relocate to family-​style seating at a cluster of old wooden tables that run the length of the restaurant. I asked the bartender for her favorites from the sausage + sides sections of the menu. She recommended the Speckwurst — a sausage made with bacon and horseradish — the asparagus (her personal favorite), and the brussel sprouts (their best seller).
The sausage was served with one of their homemade grainy mustards. It was admittedly not as flavorful as I expected given «bacon and horseradish» as the signature ingredients, but along with the mustard was a tasty, mildly-​flavored sausage. The asparagus, roasted and served al dente, was fresh and enjoyable. The brussel sprouts, however, stole the show. Roasted until the outside layer was so crispy it flaked off the top (similar to a kale chip consistency) but before the meaty inside turned to mush, I could devour three servings of these on any given vegetable-​inspired day. A sausage and a side costs $ 7 — add one more of either category for $ 9.
The draft beer list included microbrews from all over Kentucky, as well as some choice out of state offerings. I had a Deschutes (OR) Mirror Pond Pale Ale.
My Unilocal app was having trouble accessing the «$ 3 off a $ 8+ non-​alcohol purchase» deal, but the bartender I ordered from honored it anyway.
Great service, tasty food, and a very low key and welcoming vibe. It seems like many locals have been in the know about Wunderbar for quite some time, but I’d recommend to anyone passing by on I-​65. I’ll certainly return.

I don’t give 5 stars lightly, but everything about Wunderbar was wunderful. This German bar was different and unique than my favorite Hyde Park restaurants which added the best type of variety to my dinner routine.
Immediately upon entering I could tell the vibe here wasn’t what you would expect for a restaurant that’s known for things such as unique sides like Brussels sprouts served with freshly made sausages. It had a generic bar feel full of your bikers, tattoo covered regulars and a few of your «standard young professionals» looking for a good bite. Let me tell you this food wasn’t generic bar food. It was 10x more delicious.
We had originally heard about this restaurant from an article in Cincinnati Magazine for their Wunderburger, however upon arriving I immediately was intrigued by their fried green tomato BLT so I went for that instead! It was incredibly refreshing that they had such unique sides for a bar. Nothing fried or greasy. I have a recent obsession with cauliflower so I got that and it was perfectly roasted and wasn’t overly oily and very well seasoned. I went with my Dad and he went for the Wunderburger. All I can say is that this 10 ounce patty was done so well. It was moist, juicy and perfectly seasoned. It sat tall upon a pretzel bun and was quite tasty! I sampled his Brussels sprouts as well and they were awesome. Nice and crisp, well seasoned and not at all greasy. We didn’t try any of the fresh sausage but I saw many other patrons enjoying them and they looked delicious.
We went on a Sunday night and arrived just before 6 to a bar about ¹⁄₃ full. After conversing with a few regulars we learned it would get busy closer to 7 for open mike night. Sounds like some interesting people watching for another time. Overall the price was completely reasonable ($ 8.50 for a giant burger) and I’d definitely come check it it again with a group of friends. Definitely a cool find in Covington!

Wunderbar is a super-​cool hole in the wall bar. Kitschy without trying too hard for a theme, small but not uncomfortable. We came down on Sunday evening before a show, and found this nice little corner of Covington.
Local brews on draft, plenty of bottles and cans for your choice of libation. Goodness, the Cincy area has a ton of breweries, but we had to control ourselves. Appetizer — a gigantic pretzel with beer cheese and their special garlic dip (which is a mix of Greek yogurt, garlic, onion and pure magic). While we were stuffing our faces, we checked out the chalkboard menu — you order at the bar & they bring your food to rough-​wood picnic tables on the other side of the bar.
Food — absolutely awesome, everything tasted great and had plenty of snap and flavor. We were happy to learn from our bar mates that the sausages were small, so we didn’t have to narrow our choices down too much. Mettwurst, Currywurst and the Fever (which was spicy like whoa! awesome…) along with cabbage and Brussels sprouts and potato wedges. One of our party had a burger and pronounced it «darn good» — which for a picky eater is real praise.
Musicians began arriving halfway through our meal — so many instruments, so much facial hair in such a tiny space! The acoustics were actually great, though — the couple of songs we heard were actually audible.
Next time we’re in the Cov, we’re coming back to Wunderbar.
