History

Established in 2001.

With a multitude different backdrops to choose from, the studio of Heartland Photos and Design can be set up to meet any client’s needs. The portraiture clientele of Heartland Photo and Design keep coming back because the experience is fun, relaxed and unique every time. «We’re not Sears, Penney’s or The Picture People,» said Chris Ruhaak, owner. «We’re something extra.»

The family run business began in 2001 when self-​taught photographer Ruhaak ventured out on his own.

«I was art director for a small agency in Council Bluffs and they started downsizing after Sept. 11,» Ruhaak said. «It was either find an ad job or start my business. I always wanted to do photography my way.»

A background in design and the business connections he made in the past very helpful in jump-​starting things. He joined the Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce and worked his way up the ranks of leadership roles. The studio grew from rented office space in several locations to its own high-​end studio.

Ruhaak found his background in design and the business connections he made in the past very helpful in jump-​starting things. He joined the Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce and worked his way up the ranks of leadership roles. Graduating with a bachelors in Journalism with an emphasis in creative design and layout has helped tremendously with our brand and style photography. I simply love making breathtaking photography!
