History
Established in 2001.
The Bar Method is the most targeted body-scultping workout. The founder, Burr Leonard has continued to work closely with physical therapists over the last two decades to evolve The Bar Method.
The Bar Method is based on the technique of Lotte Berk, a German dancer who injured her back and had the idea of combining her ballet bar routines with her rehabilitative therapy. An avid Lotte Berk Method student since 1981, Burr began teaching in 1991 when she was The Lotte Berk Method’s sole licensee.
Upon opening her own Lotte Berk studio, Burr noticed that some of her clients’ joints were not responding well to the exercises. She then reworked the sculpting exercises under the guidance of physical therapists so the exercises would target students’ muscles without impacting their joints. Burr’s version of the exercise became so different that she decided not to renew the license with Lotte Berk and opened a studio in San Francisco called The Bar Method.
