I have suffered from depression/​anxiety since adolescence and in my adult life, PMDD, which is a debilitating form of PMS. It is awful. You’re basically in bed for two weeks every month trying to get uncontrollable suicidal ideations out of your head.
At this point in research, the only way to completely eliminate PMDD symptoms is to get your ovaries and uterus taken out. Still being a childless woman in her twenties, this was not a route I wanted to take, though I considered it seriously because it is so difficult to function normally with this disorder.
Thankfully, my regular therapist recommended neurofeedback therapy. You get some electrodes attached to your head, and it retrains your brain waves so it doesn’t go into the irregular territory which causes mental illness symptoms to begin with. I was a bit skeptical at first because it sounded too good to be true, but I already noticed a big difference after my first session. I feel better than I have felt in years, and I actually have hope now that my life might not be completely controlled by my mental illness.
Lisa is a kind, warm person who immediately puts you at ease. She has co-​authored a book on neurofeedback training and ADHD, so she knows her stuff. She is also significantly more affordable than other neurofeedback practitioners in the area. Her followup is thorough and you never feel like she’s leaving you to fend for yourself as you explore this new type of therapy. I would recommend her wholeheartedly to anyone.
