Beware! There’s some shady business going on over here. Prior to leaving to my trip to Japan, I wanted to rent a internet MIFI as it would become useful for the following reason. Unless you speak/read Japanese, Google maps was helpful navigating around Japan either with GPS directions and providing JR, private, or city subway routes and schedules. Walking directions is still considered beta, but I found it accurate when providing walking instructions from the train station to any restaurant I was searching for. Anyhow, I came to KDDI mobile on 05÷04÷15 to inquire on rental price and packages for the MIFI rental, which the girl who was working told me I need to wait 24 hours for them to prep me a MIFI, which I was ok with and told her to proceed with the preparation and I will come back the following day to pick it up. Suddenly, without looking at her computer or checking any inventory, she tells me…“you know what… I’ll just do it now” and pulls out a MIFI from drawer and starts the paperwork. At that point, I was a bit confused on her statement of I needed to wait 24 hours until I can pick up the MIFI, but after I’d just let it go and thought maybe she had an extra one laying around. She presented me with the following package based on the travel dates I provided. (2 Week LTE internet MIFI Package) $ 90 for rental $ 9 for LTE Access $ 10 for insurance Total with fees came out to $ 110 I inquired can I use this internet MIFI anywhere in Japan and are there any limitations as I will planning to travel to go to different areas in Japan(Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto)? She assured me that the MIFI is LTE and will work anywhere in Japan. Since the device was all in Japanese, I asked if she can provide instructions on navigating to different menus or if I need to be aware of any special settings. She said no and said its works out of the box. Just navigate to the wireless icon and it will provide me the SSID and MIFI password. Simple enough right? I paid my total and I was on my way… Fast forward, I left to Japan on 05⁄06 and arrived in Tokyo on 05⁄07. As expected, the MIFI was working great the first 2 days, then on the Saturday 05/09, I received an message alert on the MIFI device, but it was in Japanese, so I couldn’t read it. Then I noticed the speed performance on the MIFI device came to a halt as the connection was sluggish. That night I was meeting up with my friend that lives in Tokyo and I had to read me the message which he told me the alert says I have maxed out my data usage and the MIFI device will now operate at 4G. After that the MIFI device was pretty much useless because the connection was so slow I wasn’t able to bring up google maps or check train schedules and by the time it did load, the schedules were outdated. I had my friend check the menu and navigate to the usage logs and it showed it was maxed out 8GB until the next monthly cycle of data usage. Based on what I saw, I came to a conclusion, they gave me a MIFI Device that was previously used and close to maxing out the data cap for the month. Dafaq!!! Luckily, the apartment I was staying provided me with a WIMAX portable internet device which I ended up using that for the remainder of my trip. Fast forward again and I’m back from Japan, so I went back to KDDI mobile today to return my rental MIFI Device and told the worker(different girl that was working) what had happened and the MIFI device I rented was useless and asked for a full or partial refund. She looked at the computer screen for 4 seconds and told me «Oh its because you have a data cap(1GB per day)» I was like… wait…when I rented the device you didn’t mention anything about data cap when I inquired can I use this anywhere in Japan without limitations? She responded, oh… if you used 1GB in a day, it should fall back to 4G, but the next day should go back to LTE. I reiterated to her again, that the LTE stopped working after 2 days and switched to 4G for the remainder of my trip which again the device was useless to me. Then she told me… it stopped working because you maxed out 8GB, I told her no, if you look at the usage, from the time I rented it doesn’t match. She didn’t even make an attempt to check the usage and then told me some lame excuses… 1. Oh… it’s because you used the MIFI at the train station, that is why you used up so much bandwidth.(Dafaq!!!) 2. Oh… you didn’t used a mobile browser instead of a full browser for internet. That takes up 8GB.(Dafaq!!!) These excuses were complete BS, as I work in IT and understand data communications. At that point, I was frustrated and late to go back to work. She stood with a vacant look and continued to tell me the BS excuses. If you plan to rent a MIFI here when traveling to Japan. Be sure you ask for the following: 1. Data cap limitations 2. Before leaving, ask them to show the current usage of the MIFI device to make sure you are given a legit device. Horrible service!

I wish could give them less than a star… The cell phone I got had been something wrong since the beginning… So, I called customer service, but until I reached the operator, I called at least ten times. Anyway, they helped me to adjust my phone. A couple days later, I noticed still something bad… Those things had happened for few weeks. It took more than a month to replace the new one for me. Too stressful!!! Bad signal brings me horrible experience especially out of state,

Highly dont recommend this place. If you speak Japanese, then great it would be easier to communicate with staff. If you don’t, you are gonna have one hella of a hard time understanding them. Don’t get me wrong they were friendly but their services are horrible. I wanted a rental phone for my trip to Japan and thought I would just rent one at softbank at Japan’s airport but come to find out my flight lands at 5am and the store doesn’t open till 7 or 8. So I thought it’d be convenient just to rent one before I go. Come to find in the third day I only had 2 bars of battery left and let it charged all day but it didn’t charged. By the time I was suppose to meet a friend in Tokyo on the 4th day the phone died at the most crucial moment. If you ever been to Japan, the train station is pretty intimidating to use and then I had to waste an evening to go get new battery and charger at the nearest au store. seriously wasted one evening of my trip and they gave me a measly 10% off. You can find better. Rent your phone elsewhere!
