Coast General Performance

So I’ve brought my cars to this shop for about ten years. One of those visits involved an oil change. The mechanic left the oil cap off the car and once getting it home (my wife had taken the car in and didn’t check under the hood before driving off… always check the car before leaving a mechanic) the entire engine bay was coated in oil. I took it back and they cleaned it up. OK, I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt that the mechanic just had a brain fart.
Fast forward to this past weekend and I go through the song and dance and get a quote on the phone for a repair. I inform them of the EXACT problem, the EXACT repair, the EXACT location in the engine for it. I wait 30 min for what I’m thinking is an accurate call back. I leave the car there over night the night prior so they have all day to do what was quoted to be a 30 minute coil replacement on the engine.
Half a day later they finally call and confirm it’s the coil and quote me a price that is 1.5 times the original estimate. I try to get a word in edge-​wise with Ray. This man is the manager and his lousy New York attitude sets the tone for the entire shop, apparently. Dave was friendly and good to work with, but this Ray guy is a total jack ass. He talks over me and finally tells me he’s going to put the bad coil back in and I should come pick up the car without having the repair done. This is about 15 hours after I left the vehicle there for a repair that was a firm estimate over the phone.
Take my advice: do not come in here expecting good service. If you appear to know anything about cars and want them to stand by a firm estimate and try to stand your ground on an over charge, Ray flips. The guy is literally just an angry little man. Guess the owner doesn’t care.
Oh, and by the way, I should have known they don’t care about the little guy after seeing about a dozen ATT/​Direct TV vans in their lot for repair. It seems they have a nice service contract with them and don’t need our itsy-​bitsy auto repairs. Take your money elsewhere.

Go to Honest-​1 Auto Care on Baker. They care about you there.
Don’t ever go to Coast General Performance for any kind of work. «Performance» is what they lack. They have no customer service or tact at all.
Jan was completely rude and unforgiving.
No one seemed to work on my vehicle. It was in their care for over 3 months. Whenever I asked for an update, they gave me excuses and kept not fixing my vehicle. I finally contacted the Bureau of Automotive Repair.
Coast General Performance is seriously messed up. The Bureau instructed CGP to give my car back (unrepaired) and refund only $ 1000. (I payed over $ 2000.) At this point something was better than nothing.
***They still have not refunded the money and the car sits in their lot because it is unsafe to drive.***

Get all my oil changes here. I can’t speak for any other mechanic repairs, but I’m convinced this place gives you the best deal on oil changes. It does take an hour to be done, and you should definitely make sure to call in and see what their schedule is like for the day if you’re on a busy schedule. FYI: I’m the type of person that can wait if I can get a good price.
Couple years back I had brake problems with my older Civic. It kept making squeaky noises not just when you press on the brake, but sometimes while I was driving. I went to the Honda dealership 3 TIMES. They said they did their standard inspections saying nothing was wrong with the brake and adjusted the brake to whatever factory settings they usually perform. Yadda yadda yadda, this was bothering me because the car was only a year old with brake problems already, and the poor dealership never found the problem.
I take my car here only 1 time, and they find there are leaves, dirts, pebbles, etc. stuck in the brakes. They clean all of it out and WALLA! Brake problem gone! Thanks guys! They really saved me the headache of going back to the dealership AGAIN.

Both Dave’s were so nice and helpful and took my question right away n looked at my wheels instantly. 2 thumbs up you both deserve a raise! Customer service on point.

These guys are great! Second time I’ve been here, and they were so easy to work with! Found a nail in my tire and had me in and out in under 30 min, free of charge! They’ve found a permanent customer today!

I have always taken my car here for repairs. Only one time did I have a bad experience and this was back in 2003. They do take awhile to get your vehicle done but they’ve always been honest and reasonable with their prices. I would recommend this place to a friend or family member

I am surprised to see negative reviews. I stumbled upon Coast General Performance nearly 20 years ago when I walked into them accidentally with a list of things wrong with my car that I got from a service center on another street. (I was new to the OC and was lost). Anyways, they seemed nice so I decided to let them fix the car. When I got my car back later that day, several of the items on my estimate from the other shop were not done. They told me that they fixed everything that was wrong. How is that for HONEST! I was ready to pay for items (like brakes) that were not needed. Needless to say, I’ve been going to them for 19 years. Most of the same people still work there. I cannot say enough good things about the honesty of the staff and the quality of work. I’ve recommended them to friends and they have been happy. I’m a customer for life!!!
By the way, they are busy. But that only shows that they have a very strong following and returning customers.

I hate to leave a bad review, but i had a really bad experience at this place and won’t return. I had a 1993 toyota pick up, which, unbeknownst to me had a bad fan viscous, and the engine cooling fan was basically not working.
the radiator cracked. I had it towed in and the radiator was repaired, and i went about my business. Soon it started showing symptoms of a blown head gasket. i took it in again, left it over the weekend and they still could not diagnose the problem. I took it to a different shop, where they immediately told me it was a blown head gasket, and i paid $ 1800 to have it fixed. After that, i cracked a second radiator. all because the fan viscous was still bad and the engine wasn’t cooling properly, which no one had bothered to check.
Finally my friend who is a pro mechanic took a look at it, and told me that the fan viscous wasn’t working. It’s a $ 40 dollar part. He was amazed that it had not been checked with the prior overheating issues. I know this is true, because i remembered being able to hear the fan running in the truck before, but it had been much quieter when all this began to happen.(i guess we worry about loud noises, not eerie silence!)
Just think, if that problem (which my friend said qualified as an auto 101 type of problem) had been found, it would have saved me about 3000 worth of repairs. Needless to say, i will not be returning to this business. I had had other positive experiences with them in the past. and to be fair this did happen in 2008 but was so memorable i thought i would post. :(

Always the best in service for purchasing new tires at a reasonable price. Helpful but never pushing a product for more money. Really seem to be trying to solve your problem… repair or replacement. I have used them for all tire and alignment issues and never been disappointed. Also will rotate tires with an oil change at a very low price. No more dealer ripoffs with high prices, long waits and a sales pitch for extra servicing.

I have never written a negative review but this just made me SO mad. Dave you were nice and all and I had a really great feeling about this place especially since I live 2 blocks away. But ultimately I wasted my time and I cannot and will not recommend you guys.
Called this place to find out if I could get an oil change and tire rotation.
They said they were busy but I could schedule an appointment later after 1:30pm. No big deal. So I said let’s make it 2pm.
Show up a few minutes before 2pm. Drop off my car and keys and ask for the oil change and tire rotation.
When I asked how long it would be for service I was advised that a lift was just freeing up and it would take an hour. Perfect!
I went and kept myself busy for an hour. Walked and ran errands and returned at 3pm (exactly 1 hour later)
Upon walking back to the shop I noticed my car had not been moved. I walked in and waited in line behind 3 people who were asking for a tire quote.
When I got to the front desk I gave them my name again and asked if I could pay for my service. The front desk person looked slightly panicked and ran back to the shop door and noticed that my car hasn’t been serviced yet.
Came back and said «it looks like the lift wasn’t free and it would be a little bit longer but we can get your car in right now…»
I am NOT an unreasonable person and i have worked in customer service for years. I know stuff comes up… But just communicate that to me! I asked for my keys back and had to leave because I had booked an appointment with them so I could get in and out and on to my next appointment at 4:30 but now I just wasted an hour of my time for nothing!
Pissed and unsatisfied.

Got recommended this place by a mechanic. Very reasonable tire prices, but the best thing is that they do a great alignment. I got two new tires and my friend got a set of 4, and both our cars sound and handle better. At the very least, they do a better job than anywhere else I’ve been so far. I’ll keep coming back here for more tire stuff.

I honestly would give this place 6 stars if I could. I called this place on a whim while hyperventilating on the side of a freeway after an accident.
They gave me the best quote on a set of tires, so I had the tow truck take me here. Dave at the front desk was super friendly and professional when I came in shaken up. Jan, the owner noticed that I seemed visibly upset and asked me how I was doing. After telling him what had happened, he reminded me that the most important thing I should be grateful for was that I was unharmed. Although, the cost to get my car back on the road was extensive, Jan assured me that he would treat me like a «daughter» and give me the best price he could.
I am the BIGGEST skeptic when it comes to anyone in the auto industry, but I honestly felt that this place really cares about their customers. Most importantly, it is an honestly-​run business.
After our experience, my husband and I have decided this is the only place we will ever go or recommend to our family and friends!

Just got an oil change and tire rotation for under $ 25! A friend referred me here and they were great! She had told me that they can take a little while, but I dropped my car off in the morning before work, had a friend pick me up. And then I picked it up after work. No more Jiffy Lube for me…
