55 Barbershop

This was my first visit to this barbershop. I read the reviews on Unilocal and it seemed to be a well reviewed spot. I called to make an appointment for this morning and was told that there was an opening with Sean. I have been to a few other barbershops recently that allow walk-​ins and have been frustrated by the wait times. My previous experience had me waiting for over 2 hours to get a haircut. I don’t have time to wait around and play with my phone as I watch other men get their haircuts. I am looking for a professional barber who can give a great haircut, especially if they are expecting $ 25 – 30.
So, upon arrival this morning at this establishment, I was greeted by a friendly enough barber (who I assumed was Sean) and asked if I had an appointment. I responded by telling him that I had made an appointment for 11am. He confirmed that he would be styling my hair and was ‘running late’. Since I take this to mean maybe 5 – 10 minutes, I said this was fine and wouldn’t mind waiting. It became apparent to me that this wasn’t the case as he groomed another gentleman including beard service. I don’t expect someone else’s experience to be interrupted because of me, but I do expect appointments to be honored and customer service to be satisfactory when someone has other things happening during the day.
I waited until 11:30 (during which time I was offered a beer ~ a Coors Light, which I accepted; something a little tastier would go a long way in keeping irritated customers happy) after which time I cut my losses and left. I was extremely irritated and bothered by the ambivalence of the staff and think they could have at least made some offer of a discounted haircut or apologies for the inconvenience of the wait. If you cannot honor the appointment which is made via phone, please do not offer this option or have a placard on your door which says ‘by appointment only.’ It devalues your business and loses customers. I will not be returning to 55 Barbershop and will continue looking for a prompt barber in the local area.
I gave 2 stars because I am sure the haircuts are fine and being offered a drink of any kind is at least a gesture.

Love this place and some of the best/​most talented barbers out there. Matt has been cutting my hair for a couple of years now and nobody else can compare.
This location is super convenient because its right off the 55, and if you ever have trouble finding parking look for the lot on the backside of the building.
Always some hilarious conversation going on and now that I live all the way in Riverside I still won’t go anywhere else. Go here and you wont be sorry.

If you are still patronizing any other shop in the OC, then you don’t look your best. Matt & Sean are simply the best barbers within 50 miles.

Sean is the best barber i have ever been to! He is a very experienced and clean gentleman who knows exactly what he does. I come here ever since he opend the shop and looking forward to go back soon. The atmosphere is very chill and customerservice is just outstanding!!!

When you absolutely cannot risk looking derpy from ANY angle. James will obsess over every strand. The barbers here are so versatile too… greasers, surfers, service reps, account managers, executives — whatever look you ask for — you’re walking out of this place looking your best. Get noticed, don’t look derpy with your uneven fade and neckbeard — bro, people can tell you went to the $ 10 place and hair takes weeks to grow back. Let James or Shawn clean you up proper and have peace of mind that your lady isn’t going to clown you when you get home.

I was taken in as practically a walk-​in, and received one of the best haircuts I have ever gotten. If you are looking around for a new barber, I recommend trying this place first.

First time here. if I can give these guys 10 stars I would. Booked an appointment with Jimmy, showed up and my seat was waiting for me. Offered me a beer or water before I got into my seat. I asked for a hot towel shave. Jimmy did not disappoint, the towels were hot, the shaving cream was perfect and my haircut was perfect. This will be my new barber for life… Ask for Jimmy, he is the man.

I was in the need of a quick haircut on my vacation so I decided to skip my usual visit to True Blue and drop into this place. I walked straight in and was in a chair within 30 seconds without an appointment. I explained what my usual was and over an hour later (!!) my hair was finally finished.
I was not really thrilled with the skill of my barber. The fade was adequate, but the top of my head was a misshapen mess once I showered. I actually didn’t even get a chance to see the top until after he slicked my hair back, almost like he was quick to hide the evidence under several layers of pomade. Not sure what the deal was, I’ve never had a barber purely use clippers on the top of my head since I stopped going to Supercuts when I was 18.
I’m always looking for new places to get my haircut, sadly I won’t be coming back here anytime soon.

Great place. Fair prices and my barber, james, has good intuition of what cut you’re asking for takes time to make sure the cut is just the way you want it.

I was in OC for business and found this Shop via SIRI.
I had no appointment but was warmly welcomed.
This is a very highly professional establishment.
My Barber took his time, was very diligent and the end result was a very clean cut.
I would highly recommend this Shop.

If you are looking for great barber who not only has excellent skills with clippers and scissors but also provides you with great conversation and unbeatable customer service go see James at 55 barbershop. James is a master in the ancient art form of precise cuts, good conversation, and knowing you on a first name basis like the Small town barbers of a past era. I first ran into James at a barbershop in South Orange county near my place. When I heard he set up shop in Costa Mesa I knew I be driving 20 miles or so out of my way to get my haircut and shave because I don’t want anyone else touching my hair.
Do yourself a favor if you are looking for a nice classic cut, from a good guy who will make you feel at home, go see James.

Sean and staff are awesome. Great conversation on the chair but most important amazing haircuts.
I just moved out here and like anyone else that cares about their hair I was skeptical at first to just go to someone new. But it was worth it.
I work in a gym so a fresh look is important. These guys nailed it!
Definitely going back here in a couple of weeks.

Went in for a haircut on a Saturday afternoon and I didn’t even have to wait. I got my haircut by James, who is a master. James offered me a refreshment before he started. He took his time and did a great job at giving me a fade.
I plan on coming here from now on. Great barbershop.

I’ve been going here since they opened & I’ve got to say I really enjoy their service, but overall the quality of they cuts. Raul does a really good job and I would highly recommend booking an appointment with him. These guys truly value your business and take their time making sure the cut comes out to your liking. I’ve been going to many different barbers/​shops in the OC and I have to give these guys extra credit for their overall service!

Cool little shop with a mellow vibe. All the barbers seem to really take their time and take pride in their work, not like a lot of shops that are trying to get as many cuts a day in as they can.
