we came cause of a local TV special and this review is for their donuts from the walk up window. we were told they were made fresh daily so it was a no brainer for us donut lovers. got a half a dozen and nothing was right from their yeast donuts. the feel, the weight or texture of a donut wasn’t right, it was more like heavy dense sweet rolls.

Located at the corner of Tenth and Orange on Coronado Island, I was really wanting to like this place. There is a full service coffee shop inside and a street side walk up window outside. It was a beautiful SoCal day, so we chose the walk up route. Two coffees and a breakfast sandwich were north of sixteen dollars. What??? Come to find out, the young gal at the window rang it up wrong. Whew! We further started regretting our outside option when the trash truck came. Who picks up trash on Sunday? It took a while for the sandwich to come out, but this was the saving grace of the visit. The best English Muffin Sandwich I’ve ever devoured. The sandwich was rather large and served on a fresh muffin with sausage, American cheese and scrambled egg! Yes, scrambled. Cooked to perfection and made to fit perfectly on the muffin. The coffee was good and the food was better. Besides, it’s on Coronado. Can’t really go wrong there, right?

Stopped in while on Coronado Island. the place was really busy but the server got right to us. they food our order and we did not have to wait to long for as busy as they were. the food was good and served hot. very fresh! I could not believe how good the place was/we did have to wait for them to finally bring the bill around. the price was not bad either.

I was going to eat inside, but there was no place to sit. So I chose the sidewalk walk up window. After just under 10 minutes a waitress finally passed by and said«I’ll be right with you» which apparently means ‘you’ve been standing there for 10 minutes, how about 10 minutes more?‘ Giving the benefit of the doubt, it was busy, I continued to wait, my expectations growing about the quality of the food. I mean if it’s this busy, the food must be great right? Trying to keep it simple I ordered a Chorizo Burrito, comes filled with chorizo, eggs, cheese and something that may have been mashed potatoes(God, I hope that’s what it was). Good sized portion, still hot, smelled yummy. Halfway through the burrito I actually ran into some chorizo! What a pleasant surprise! Please correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t chorizo supposed to be a little spicy? Just a little? Let’s just say the chorizo looked good but was about as spicy as the mashed potato-like substance. At $ 10(with an OJ) I really thought it was overpriced for what I got. But it is in Coronado so apparently that’s considered a $ rating. Next time I’m in the mood for a chorizo burrito I’ll head down the strand to Jalisco’s. I remember when this was the Day & Night Café. A classic greasy spoon yet it had excellent service, good food, great prices. «The good old days!»

Love the old classic coffee shop and diner. Also that they charge 5 cents for a coffee for military on Wednesday-kudos!People must still be born in a barn as the front door doesn’t seem to close so avoid sitting there when it’s cold outside. Or management should put a sign on the front door. I don’t like feeling I’m sitting outside in the winter when I’m really sitting indoors. Had an Acai bowl. My second fruit bowl out here in San D. and I’m realizing that any frozen sorbet just isn’t good for your internals in the morning-Following Ayurvedic principles. Esp when having hot coffee in contrast with it. It’s like a shock to your body. Please bring back the yogurt bowls. Yogurt is better for you. Maybe just have a scoop of sorbet– not an entire sundae bowl. They could easily serve two people. Sure the sorbet is «healthy» but not at the amount that is served. I’m thinking these frozen bowls will be a passing fad.

My husband: «I wanna have every meal here for the rest of my life!» The only reason for the 4 instead of 5 stars is disjointed wait/seating. But we were fine because we weren’t in a hurry, and I would say that if you are, come a different time. Other than that this it is the perfect way to start the New Year!!! So Coronado Island, like an upscale Mel’s Diner!!! The menu is quite affordable, too. They clearly profit on volume and quality!

Great breakfast at a place that has a 1970’s feel. Food was wholesome and delicious. The ladies that took care of us work as a team never had to wait for anything. So friendly!

This place is a real popular breakfast place in Coronado, and it’s cute old fashioned diner style and a big hit for tourist. I am giving 4 stars because it’s just ok for me. It gets crowded and there’s usually a wait around lunchtime. There’s other good breakfast in Coronado so I’ll avoid it if it’s busy. Plus it’s tight inside… like you feel squishy with ur neighbor, so great if you’re single and mingling

It’s about 10:30 am on a Tuesday and I’ve finished up my Mexi Mocha but debating on ordering another because the last one made my eyes twinkle and my heart sing. The sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, and I actually enjoyed standing in line to order from the window on Tenth St and Orange Ave. While in CA, I try to sample a variety of local Mexi food and drinks, understanding that two establishments may have menus with the same named dishes but taste will vary. I appreciate those discrete differences. I wasn’t disappointed by my Mexi Mocha. With just the perfect touch of warm, Mexi chocolate flavor, Clayton’s serves the best Balanced Mexi Mocha I’ve ever had!

Their generously sized breakfast burrito is quite satisfying. I go there for their blended coconut mochas, though, as they’re delightfully refreshing as you walk around orange street, or head to the beach 5 minutes down the road.

This is my go to spot for breakfast every time I’m in the Coronado area. It’s atmosphere is awesome and their HUGE cinnamon rolls are too DIEFOR!!! The right amount of sweetness from the frosting and the wonderful balance of soft non sweet pastry in the dough. Cinnamon roll heaven! i give a 4.5 review because at certain times they are so busy there isn’t any seating and on hot days it can be kind of stuffy. But I will suffer through just to eat their food.

Any time I am on the Island Claytons is my go spot. It’s a cozy little dinner with a home like atmosphere. The food is always very good, both breakfast and lunch, l(for the times I have visited) and the dinner specials always look tasty but I have yet to make it there in the afternoon. The portions are well enough sized for one person but the prices are a tad high(it is coronado). The only problem that I have expierenced is the service, it’s hit or miss. Unfortunately it seems like I have received poor service more then I have good. Although this is very unfortunate, Claytons is still a favorite for me and I will continue to be a customer!

Loved it so much we went back for dinner before we have to go home. Staying at Del Coronado and quick little walk over and totally worth it. Had a grilled tuna Avocado with Swiss. Delicious. Perfect balance of all the ingredients– never had avocado on a tuna melt. sets it apart from other tuna melts for sure Hubby had the BLT burger with fried eggs — yummy. Reminds us of x-tudo from Brazil. Would highly recommend it Finished it off with coconut cream pie! It’s the crust I tell you. Super yummy

I was curious why such a cute little place would have only three and a half stars on Unilocal. My take? In two words: Air conditioning. Or more specifically, the lack of A/C. It was a bit of a bother on this day. Patrons share a room with the short order cooks and their stovetop. No quantity of open windows and fans was going to beat the heat on this hot day. Four stars I understand, but three? I choose to think of Clayton’s Coffee as a true 1950’s pre-A/C dining experience worthy of five stars. Clayton’s has a lot going for it. The counter. The booths. The working jukebox.(We dropped 50 cents for four song choices. How can you not?) The pancakes. The kid’s Kraft Mac and Cheese. Unexpectedly, the salads! Friendly servers. Amazingly fast service. Breakfast all day. Lots of classic comfort food to explore. It is a bit pricey for a spot that is admittedly kind of a dive, but not at all out of line given that it’s on Coronado Island. We’ll definitely be back, but perhaps on a cooler day. But then again, they do serve ice cream. And there’s always the walk-up window.

This place looks like something out of the 1950’s with red leather booths and tiny jukeboxes on the countertops. It’s adorable and fits with the small-town vibe of Coronado but the food just wasn’t up to snuff. I like myself a good brunch or breakfast and was excited about the menu which, as you can imagine, was filled with brunch classics. I went with the biscuits and gravy based on the Unilocal review highlights and was pretty disappointed. The gravy was bland(it didn’t taste homemade) and the biscuits were on the dry side. The quoted wait time was ~45 minutes and the hostess asked us to check back in 20 minutes. We did and they had been calling our name for a while and were about to give or seats away but the wait estimates were off with no way of reaching us if our table came up early.

Good diner food with friendly, prompt service. The spicy sausage egg sandwich was good, but all the food was heavy. Hash browns are real potatoes grilled. Fresh and plentiful iced tea. Fantastic coffee, only 5 cents for military on Wednesdays.

Great home cooking. Fantastic prices for this area. Breakfast served all day. Breakfast, lunch and dinner served 7 dsys/week. My mom had a tuna sandwich on squaw. Large sandwich, very fresh and delicious. Came with cole slaw she said was very good, and the old girl knows cole slaw, so if she says it’s good, you should give it a try. I went for the garden burger with avocado and a side of fries. Garden burger was very tasty and the cook was generous with the avocado. Fries were perfectly cooked(crinkled) so that they were crispy on the outside. They were busy at 2:30 on a monday, but the friendly waitress looked up and said«sit anywhere». We did and had very efficient service. Very cool at the table jukebox(2 songs for 25 cents!)
