New York Military Academy

I attended this school and found it be tough but fair and disciplined. Contrary to popular belief anyone who did not tow the line or was a «wise guy» never made it out. It graduated strong, disciplined and well educated young men. Pansies and wimps need not apply. This was an old style military academy and those who were there with me were the best of the best and so were the teachers, administrators and staff. Some people try to denigrate this school but it is always those who could not make the cut. Thank you, NYMA for all you have done for me and others.

I don’t know why people that have absolutely no idea about something write a review about this great school. You dropped someone off there and you think you have an understanding about how their system works? It’s ridiculous. its the whole idea behind nyma, not the way it looks, etc that matters. i went to nyma for 2 years and let me tell you it’s the best thing that ever happend to me. It teaches you honor, discipline, respect, how to manage and lead people, honesty and many other traits that you need later in life. It prepared me for life like nothing else did. Nyma is a tough place but it will make you a man and ready for whatever comes your way later. I thank my mother and God for sending me there. Remember that a lot of successful people, including donald trump went to nyma and I’m sure they share my opinions. Maybe if you would have attended nyma you would have better character and you wouldn’t write such nonsense.

I don’t know what all the negativity is about. You’re all talking about legacy stuff that was just part of life in the Pre-​PC world. I’m sure anyone could dig up some nasty stories about their high school in the 70’s/80’s/90s.
This school made me a very confident person in life upon graduating. All the tests of character and aspects of the school that are perceived to be negative, you just have to make the best out of.
From the TAC Officer (not tactical as every ignorant person thinks, but in fact Training Advising & Counseling) that dressed up and acted like the Terminator with his pimped out purple car with the fancy etching to the nurse that forged his credentials to get a job and then raped some kid in the upstairs of the infirmary to being the Goat in Physics class (don’t ask, but I got an A because of it)…these are things that are well beyond the scope of the school’s total control. You don’t want that… then it becomes a prison as you say. You can’t have it both ways. Individual actions can’t speak for the entire scoreboard of the school. Yeah the study hall guy «humiliated» everyone… so what. He made me jump rope and do pushups in front of everyone, big deal. That dude was awesome, he was what the school needed to keep the delinquents in check. I suppose when you get in trouble, marching tours, (marching back and forth with a rifle for an hour or so) raking leaves, or painting the «falling apart prison buildings» is humiliation too. Oh yeah, I never heard of the show of respect to an officer being a Hirohito bow, probably a salute. I figured the kid was thinking, «haha, I’m with my guardian, I don’t have to acknowledge that {expletive}. I’ve been there, but regardless followed the rules… mostly.
God forbid some of these legacy people still work at the school, I don’t want to say anything that may get them in trouble by the PC-​police. They’ve all had a positive impact in my life. One of the faculty now is a New York Assemblyman, he used to call my roommate a buffoon because he’d ask inappropriate health questions. Maybe that’s humiliation or needs a hurt feelings report… I don’t know. Those kind of people probably complained when they didn’t get their 10^th place trophy to not feel left out. As far as someone coming out of that place paranoid or an expert thief, yeah well the place does teach you street smarts. The prime lesson I learned there is never be a rat… no matter what. I came there the privileged white kid from Long Island with no clue about anything outside of the area I lived in… the first month I got put in my place and learned fast. In enough time through exposure to a melting pot of classmate culture, you could probably stroll down any area of NYC and either blend in or avoid dicey situations.
So the school has some financial issues. The place is like a cat, it’ll find its way on its feet through a generous benefactor such as Donald Trump or the 100 Black Men of America.
I did not rate it 5 stars because I did not have much of a female social life experience there (not many females) Its kind of limited. I know I didn’t go to school for that, but doing all the girlfriend type stuff for the first time in college or depending on summer flings in the high school years is a huge learning curve/​disadvantage.

Was here to capture a wedding and the surrounding area made for a great backdrop. The grounds are beautiful.

My impression of this school is limited to my 1 visit in early September 2014 to drop off an exchange student for which I am the legal guardian for the school year, and their subsequent communications since that time until now.
Campus accessibility — Incredibly confusing to navigate from the outside. We had no idea where to park or where to go, especially after getting directions from very confused cadets. From the outside, a lot of it looks old, dingy, and very run-​down.
Dorms — very run down, incredibly simple (prison-​esque) and way too many kids to a room (there are SO many dorms for the small enrollment that they have. Why not space kids out?)
Staff — They were very pleasant [with the exception of some very weird general who was incredibly strict to US (instead of the student) and borderline inappropriate], but never contact me as this student’s legal guardian when they are supposed to. For example, the campus closed from March 16^th-​March 19^th because of issues with financing and their ongoing bankruptcy proceedings. I heard, through the Times Herald Record online, that the campus was closed to all students. It’s almost a month after the campus closed, and I still no idea where this student, who I am technically legally responsible for said student, went during this time period. You would think that student well-​being was a concern for them, but apparently not.
Students — I haven’t had much interaction with them but the students that I spoke with that day when we met everyone at orientation were really pleasant and said they enjoyed a lot of the experience, although the jerk that I mentioned earlier was really mean to this very pleasant Russian exchange student and embarrassed the hell out of him. I get that it’s part of the whole atmosphere, but I didn’t see the point of shaming a student because he didn’t bow to his commandant (i can’t figure out if this is US or British royalty with that behavior)
Overall — seems like a great place with great commraderie on paper, but the school is in financial ruins, and it’s likely that it will be a greatly reduced version of itself after the conclusion of this school year. Be aware.

This is what I had posted as a true account of my experience as a student there.
This school never had proper supervision during the times students were exercising in the gym after Classes. between the years of 1993 – 1994 when I was a student there, there would be absolutely no adults supervising a student body of at least 150 students inside the gymnasium. When I fell from one of the bleachers and did not regain consciousness for an entire half an hour, there were no adults present. Two students carried me almost a quarter of a mile from the gymnasium to the infirmary in the back of the mess hall. Only then was I transported to the emergency room. I had bruises and considerable swelling on the entire right side of my face, a black eye and I had my right arm in a cast. Years later, my right eye was diagnosed with lattice degeneration and my physician informed me that it was due to head trauma.
In an online definition of head trauma due to retinal detachment relevant to my case of lattice degeneration:
Direct trauma to the eye can lead to retinal breaks, holes, or tears that occur days, weeks, months, or even years after the incident. Trauma severe enough to cause a black eye, hemorrhage on the white part of the eye, hemorrhage within the eye, a penetration or laceration of the eye, cataract, light flashes, floaters, or decreased vision can be related to subsequent retinal detachment.
I would never allow a child of mine to attend this School. There are other reasons as well that I wouldn’t recommend this academy. I remember enduring humiliation by one of the administrators with «major» military ranking. He asked me to stand in front of the auditorium during study hall and addressed the students. Pointing to me, he told the other students that I was an example of someone whom would fail in life. I have to say that daily humiliations such as this occurred quite frequently at this academy. I also have to say that I’ve graduated from Columbia university with a 4.0 and have won numerous literary awards since attending this school (and leaving during my sophomore year in high school). Changing schools allowed me to build a healthier self esteem and showed me what real academic competition was all about. NYMA’s academic program was so behind the standards of other schools I have attended.
Another incident comes to mind when reflecting upon my time at NYMA. The woman who looked after the females in the barracks asked me once to pull down my pants so that I would be able to prove I was having my menstruation cycle. This woman was later discharged from her position and asked to leave NYMA because another student told authorities that this woman sexually abused her. Hearing this news was no surprise to me, as many things go unreported at this school during the time I attended NYMA,
