Specialties

Karate involves hand strikes and blocks, kicks, and traditional prearranged forms called kata. After some practice, the effectiveness of hand and foot techniques is applied against opponents. Practice sessions are designed to polish the techniques in a safe manner while providing excellent physical exercise. Through the practice of traditional Japanese karate, you will learn self-​defense in a sincere professional manner.

Well over 100,000 children and adults have practiced Shotokan Karate in SKA schools throughout North America since 1955. Our facilities include many colleges, YMCA’s and recreation centers.

The mission of Shotokan Karate of America is «To preserve, perpetuate, and advance the legacy of Shotokan Karate for the betterment of the lives of those who train, and to contribute positively to human history.»

History

Established in 1955.

Cordova Shotokan Karate is affiliated with Shotokan Karate of America (SKA), which has been teaching karate in North America since 1955. We practice a traditional form of karate that was the first introduced to Japan in 1922. Our chief instructor is Master Tsutomu Ohshima, the founder of Shotokan Karate in the United States.

Meet the Business Owner

Business Owner

Steve Ethridge began training in Shotokan Karate in 1989 under Robert Bird (Yodan), 4th degree blackbelt. Robert is the founder and leader of Memphis Shotokan. Both Cordova Shotokan Karate and Memphis Shotokan are affiliates of Shotokan Karate of America (SKA).

Robert began his training in 1977 in Tae Kwon do and, in 1980, started his study of Shotokan Karate under Byron Snowball of the Bronx (NY) Dojo.

Steve has won several regional area tournament awards. Robert has also won numerous awards. including placing second in international competition as a member of the AAU USA Karate Team. In 2002 Robert was select as a member of the US team competing at Spain Shotokan’s 25th Anniversary.
