The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center is an air and space museum dedicated to NH space pioneers Christa McAuliffe (NASA’s 1st Teacher-in-Space) and Admiral Alan Shepard (America’s 1st astronaut and, as Apollo XIV Commander, one of only 12 human beings to have walked on the Moon). This science museum features an observatory, café, interactive indoor and outdoor exhibits on aviation, astronomy, Earth and space science, a full-dome digital planetarium with shows from around the world, summer science & engineering day camps for kids ages 5 — 14, and special stargazing and science talks and workshops the 1st Friday night of each month.
History
Established in 1990.
Originally created in 1990 as the Christa McAuliffe Planetarium to honor NASA Teacher-in-Space Christa McAuliffe, in 2009 the planetarium changed its name to the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center, as it quadrupled in size to a 45,000 square foot science museum dedicated to McAuliffe and her hero, America’s first astronaut, Admiral Alan Shepard. After 22 years as a State of NH museum, the Discovery Center became an independent private sector nonprofit science museum on January 1, 2013.

«Excellent, affordable food, right within our museum. Proprietors Sully and Sandy do a great job and open whenever the Discovery Center is open.»
