Tooth And Claw Canine Training

We rescued an English Bulldog a few months ago with several bad habits that we just couldn’t seem to break, mainly mouthing to get attention, ANY ATTENTION. I was covered in bruises from it. By pure luck we found Dana. Dana came out to visit Nimitz and see him at home with us. Dana spent at least an hour sitting with the family and talking to us about options to work with Nimitz. We choose a three day intro package and soon thereafter sent Nimitz to stay at Tooth and Claw. We received several videos each day on his progress and at the end we received a dog that is much better behaved and interacts much better with our family. Best of all if he wants something we have been able to train him to tell us, ring the bell to go out, bring a toy to play, don’t mouth me.

My fiancé and I adopted our dog Fia, a 1 year old terrier mix, from a local shelter about 5 months ago and were completely overwhelmed with some of the behavioral issues she had when we got her home. She was extremely anxious, terrified of people and had severe separation anxiety with panic attacks any time we would leave the house. We reached out to a behaviorist that the shelter recommended and unfortunately did not have a good experience. Not only did Fia not improve, but her issues actually became much worse and we barely left the house out of fear that she might hurt herself. After a month or so of trying this person’s approach we were at our breaking point and didn’t know if we would be able to keep Fia thinking that maybe we just weren’t the right fit for her. Luckily we were referred to contact Dana through a co-​worker of mine and our relationship with our dog has completely changed for the better.
Dana uses a nice balance of controlled corrections and consistent positive reinforcement to build Fia’s confidence and we have seen huge improvement. The most notable change is Fia’s relationship with my fiancé. She used to be so afraid of him that she wouldn’t come near him and would hide and/​or bark anytime he moved around the apartment. Our training with her has completely changed their relationship and he’s now her favorite person. Watching her run up to him wagging her tail when he gets home is probably the most gratifying thing I have experienced with her.
We are learning that the best way to help Fia with her anxiety is to expose her to the things that make her afraid while having her focus on her commands to give her a sense of comfort that these things are no big deal. We are starting to be able to bring Fia with us to our friends’ and family member’s homes without worry that she will panic. She’s starting to come around and be interested in meeting new people and is really starting to thrive. We are going to continue to work with the basic skills that Dana has taught us and look forward to scheduling future training sessions with him soon. He has been a lifesaver and we are so thankful for his guidance. Highly recommend!

My dog had a long history of being very anxious around people and dogs. I had tried several tactics to help her, but nothing seemed to stick.
