Four String Brewing Co

I started going here when only about 10 people could fit inside and they were brewing about 4 – 5 beers. I walked in after Thanksgiving and they moved their brewing to Hilltop area, but now have room for about 30 people more easily and more beers on their menu! The bartender stated they will continue to tap new testing brews at this same location which will be cool. It has a unique, «hole in the wall» feel. If I have to pick one to keep going back to with my boyfriend, we always pick this one.

If you’re looking for a minimalist space that only serves beer with free pretzel rods, this is the place for you. Disclaimer: I was pretty buzzed when I came here so I don’t exactly have a clear grasp of everything that was here.
So, I came here later in the evening. It’s pretty much a tap room. Wasn’t too crowded but there really isn’t that much seating. It’s got an industrial vibe and it’s in an old building with some of its original character. A few high top tables to set your drink on and chat with your pals. I’ve read that they do have food trucks on Saturdays so that’s a plus.
Honestly, I don’t remember which beer I had. I wasn’t that impressed. I’ve only had a couple Four String brews in my life and I don’t feel like I’ve been blown away. A pint is around $ 5 so pretty average for the city.
I don’t think I’ll be back. It’s kind of off the beaten path from everything else in Grandview. Not opposed to it but I doubt it will be a destination. I’ve gotten my stamp for my ale trail book so I’m set for awhile.

I dig the vibe of this place. I especially love Saturdays when my favorite food truck stops by. Even if I’m not a huge beer drinker, they do have a couple I don’t mind sipping on from time to time.

This is absolutely my favorite microbrew in Cbus. The Big Star White IPA is delicious. The place is small, but has an awesome back room vibe. If you need frills to your drinking experience then this is not your place. BUT, if you want kick ass beer and great service, them this place is a can’t miss.

This is a very tiny brewery. Truly that is the only negative. There is very limited space to sit or stand and it is really dark inside. The staff was very pleasant and the beer is good. Just be prepared to stop by have a beer and go.

BRASS KNUCKLE! Yum!!! I order it whenever I see it on tap. If Humulus Nimbus from Seventh Son is on tap too, it’s a really tough call. Finally got a chance to go to the Four String tasting room. It’s tight quarters, but definitely great to get to try everything they have to offer instead of hoping the bar you go to will have a decent selection.

We stopped in here when we first arrived to Columbus and Im glad we did– very cool guys behind the bar that engaged everyone who came in as though they were old friends— they encourage you to explore around the place and love to talk shop about their (and other local) beers which made for some great conversation. Good tunes, good brews, cool little spot — doesn’t serve food but makes up for it with food trucks right outside for a bite. Definitely worth checking out for at least one drink (or flight of beer) when coming to town. Make sure you get there early on Saturdays (before noon) to get a little of their weekly special/​casks they make during the week or you’ll miss out and it will be gone!

You have to know where to go for Four String — they’re kinda tucked in behind a bunch of other stuff — but when you find them, you’re in for a good time.
Until their new production facility is open, everything is done there, which means the taproom area can get cramped if they’re busy, but it feels more conspiratorial than oppressive — you’re there with a lot of people out to have a good time, which helps.
I’m a big fan of the suncaster wheat and vanilla porters — I’m not a huge IPA guy, but the Big Star is OK as far as that goes.
What really will make it special, though, is canning.
Four String usually cans beer every Thursday from 10−2pm, and they’ll put out a call for helpers pretty regularly.
Stop by, spend a couple hours helping to can, building 6 packs, or stacking pallets, and you’ll be rewarded with a free lunch, a beer or two as you eat, and a six pack of the brew you just helped can to take home. How great is that? It’s a neat way to connect with the brewery on an even closer level, and if you’re interested in homebrewing, to see that much more of the process.

I’m not going to write about the beer. Well, not much about the beer.
I dig them. Some of their beers were a miss for me when they first opened, but now? Fuck, Brass Knuckles is my go-​to sixer.
Anyways — this isn’t exactly a «open bar» area. It’s tiny. It’s cramped when it’s crowded. It’s great to grab a flight and a pint and get the fuck out.

3.5 stars! I came here with a group of friends to watch the NCAA games on tv! It was a great place to have unique craft beers! I ordered the vanilla porter. It was a sweet, dark drink with a vanilla after taste. It was slightly bitter like an IPA. My only critique was that the place was pretty small so finding a table and enough seats to fit my group was hard.

Decided on a whim to check out the taproom here on a Saturday night. It really is literally a taproom and not an actual bar. The space is tiny, with maybe 4 tables in addition to the bar. Maybe fits about 20 people? They had 5 beers on tap that night — a pale ale, 2 IPA’s, vanilla porter, black ale. I personally love porters and stouts, so one friend and I each got the vanilla porter and another friend got a beer flight of the other four. None of us were very impressed with our beers. The pale ale smelled really good, but all of them lacked any real flavor/​depth. This is consistent with a few various other times I’ve tried Four String beers at other restaurants. It’s never stood out to me.
Pluses for this place? Ample parking around. Not too crowded on a Saturday night… maybe around 10 people there when we arrived. Although despite that, service was kinda slow. The single bartender was taking his time talking to what seemed like a regular while my group was waiting at the bar to get our beers. When we first walked in, we could see literally everyone turning their heads and staring at us. Made us feel very unwelcomed, but we just ignored it. *shrug*
Drinks are priced pretty average, at $ 5/​pint + 25c tax. They also have growlers and cans available for purchase.
All in all, there’s nothing about this place that pulls me back. Beer was substandard, atmosphere was substandard. No food available, though Brazenhead across the street will apparently deliver. I won’t be coming back with Zauber’s across the street or Seventh Son just a short drive away.

Just not a fan… Beers are average …5 of their own on tap… But can only get a flight of 4… how silly is that? Would have been one star but have them a star for the pretzel rods on the tables!

The Four String Brewing Company is the perfect place for any local beer lover in Columbus. The tiny tap room smells of hops, with the brewing equipment in full view right next to their bar area.
The limitations of the bar are its size, its lack of food (although they are starting to have regular food trucks outside), its limited selection (only Four String beer), and the fact it’s only open Thursday-​Saturday (the other days of the week they are brewing).
On Saturday nights they have firkins of their standard beers, infused with any number of interesting flavors. Thursdays are movie nights. They now sell six packs of their Brass Knuckle Pale Ale and their Big Star White IPA. The beer is always fresh and delicious. Flights are available.
Their bartenders are always lovely and knowledgeable. There is parking directly in front of the bar and in a big lot next door.
I cannot recommend this place highly enough if you are a beer-​lover. Very worthwhile and a great addition to the neighborhood.

Great to decent beers, and an awesome setting.
THE BEERS
I had a flight of 5, and they were all pretty good. Not a bad one in the lot, and I am very picky. The one that stays in my mind was the White IPA infused with Basil, berries and lemongrass I think … that was genius. Growler prices are very very reasonable.
THE SERVICE
Very friendly and accommodate my request for a flight of 5 was graciously taken.
THE ATMOSPHERE
I went mad as soon as I walked in. The pub is just a few tables at one end of the actual brewing room, and the smell of beer wort filled the air. As a former home brewer, I love that smell and nothing better than to have a beer in the air where it is being made.

I’ve always enjoyed Four String, but they really keep improving. The new tap room is raw, but fun. It’s basically a few seats around a bar that opens directly into the rest of the brewery. It’s like you’re pulling up a chair next to the brew crew. It’s fun.
They have odd firkins for sampling at the tap room too, so it’s always fun to stop by and see what random creation is on tap in a given week. Much fun.

My initial review of Four String was so-​so, but it has improved quite a bit in my mind. Whereas the beer initially was somewhat inconsistent, the consistency and quality have improved quite a bit. I heard through the grapevine that they initially had issues with temperature control and that those have been worked out. Whether that’s true or not, hooray for better beer!
I checked out their new taproom, which is open Thursday through Saturday (and maybe Sunday, I’m not sure), and it’s a nice space. The front of the brewery has been nicely overhauled with a decent size bar and several tables. It would be a good spot to take a small to medium size group of friends for happy hour on Thursday or Friday. All of their available beers are on tap, and they’re trying to have a new and different firkin every Friday, which is a cool idea.
If you gave Four String a shot in the past and weren’t crazy about it, try it again. It’s pretty good now, and their space is a cool place to hang out.

I was already a fan of Four String’s two beers, but today I had a chance to sample their new cherry blonde, and vanilla porter. The cherry blonde, no doubt, will be a staple in my summer beer arsenal this summer, and I think I «sampled» about 10 10oz vanilla porters so… yeah. It’s the best porter I’ve ever had. And there ya have it.

I just realized I was going to open this review with the «I don’t always…» meme, until I remembered that the original was «drink beer» and, well, yeah.
SO…I don’t drink beer often, but I have brewed a few batches over the years and know the home-​brew process fairly well. I also know that it’s a little more complicated when you (and your customers) actually care about consistency beer after beer. Yeast, hops, grain and even water can be finicky, and not just the quality has to be consistent, but the taste, texture and visuals have to be repeatable as well in order to build a recognizable brand that draws in new customers, while keeping existing customers coming back for more.
When I tried both the Backstage (Belgian) Blonde and the Brass Knuckle (American Pale Ale), I was pretty surprised at how well I liked them both. In general, I prefer pale ales, but in this case, I actually appreciated the Belgian notably more.
Visiting the brewery during the first Unilocal Elite party of the year, I was able to meet the owner (Dan’s pretty cool — and he plays the bass, which is also very cool), see the cordoned-​off stainless-​steel fermentation tanks, and learn a little about the product.
The best part about going to a small, local brewery is that you get to see the faces behind the beer. My palate certainly isn’t as sophisticated as some of the hardcore beer lovers out there, but I feel I can accurately say that Four String Brewing Company is passionate about making one or two great, local beers, and keeping things consistent for the long-​term happiness of their customers.
I wish them good luck, and hope to see Four String in more locations in the future!

Having now sampled Four String’s two offerings on two occasions (Bodega and at the OYE party) I can say that it’s an A-​OK brewery. It will be a year or two for them to work out the kinks, and come up with generational consistency that makes their product on par with the other micros in Columbus, but that should not deter you from trying their offerings immediately.
Review of the «Backstage Blonde» belgian style ale:
This ale is a solid straw color, with short quickly disappearing head. It is well carbonated, perhaps even a bit towards the champagne side. The flavor is good, it’s more of a hefeweizen with a belgian spice finish. The brewer notated that this is designed to be a lower ABV (5−6%) «session-​able» beer (meaning drink a lot) using the chimay belgian ale yeast. It’s certainly easy-​drinking, and does not have a lot of overpowering spice and alcohol overtones that a strong belgian tripel or quadrupel can have. I would give this beer 3.5÷5 stars.
Review of the «Brass Knuckle» american pale ale:
Again a straw color, not as pale as you would think for an APA. Short, neat head with little lacing. Immediate hop bite through your mouth that borders on the strong side. Very dry and acidic mouth feel, little bit of a watery finish where I would expect some floral notes. I would give this a ³⁄₅ where it is now.
Watch for the brewery to have some outstanding beer specials in the coming months. I believe they will have a growler fill deal that will make the session blonde ale an enticing choice.
