Double Comfort Restaurant

Absolutely amazing. We came for lunch and, while we were the only ones in the restaurant, it was all amazing. From the wonderful food and the service, as well as meeting the manager on duty. Definitely a thumbs up and some of the best southern comfort food in the city. The location can definitely make parking a problem but it’s definitely worth it to try some ofthe stuff here. Some of the best Chicken in the city as the Puntine was amazing. Definitely recommending it to all of my friends and family.

Update 2: third time is definitely NOT the charm. I shouldn’t have gone back but good memories of my first visit and their patio near my hotel on a sunny day led me back. The service was much better this time but the food was terrible. My Brussels sprouts lacked flavor and sort of lazily just had bacon bits thrown on top. Then my chicken was undercooked. It was pink and mushy and I only had a couple bites– I shouldn’t have even eaten that. Now a few hours later I feel sick and terrible, and I will never go back to this place again. Avoid, avoid, avoid!
I only popped in for takeout so I can’t comment on service, but I had an excellent piece of fried chicken and then a kale salad (less fun less excellent but let’s be real it’s a kale salad). Would definitely go again.
Update: went again last week and did not have a great experience. Went for dinner on a Tuesday night was told they were out of strawberries because of the weekend’s brunch– okay, fine so they used blueberries instead on my hazelnut kale salad. Would have been fine except the salad also had no hazelnuts. So it was just kale and blueberries. When I pointed out to the waitress that there were no hazelnuts she goes «really?!» Didn’t apologize or offer anything for the mistake. The chicken was also less good on this second visit, much dryer like it had been cooked a while ago and sat out. I won’t be back.

Don’t get me wrong. The chicken and waffles are decent, but I’m convinced this place doesn’t know how to serve anything else.
After being seated, my girlfriend and I put in our food orders. The Beignets were decent, but not something worth ordering again, and definitely not worth $ 5. My girlfriend ordered the yogurt, fruit, and granola on top of a waffle. I ordered chicken and waffles.
After it took about 45 minutes to get our food (the place was not crowded), the yogurt came out in a bowl and not on a waffle. She politely asked for a waffle and they said they’d bring one right out, but they brought another order of chicken and waffles.
In the end, the meals were just okay but not worth coming back with so many other great brunch options in the Short North area. And the service is what knocks off the rest of the stars

We stopped in here on a Saturday afternoon around 1 PM for brunch. We were expecting a wait with the close proximity to the Short North and Convention Center, but we were seated immediately. Only two other tables were occupied. I was surprised when only one other person came through the door during our entire meal.
We ordered the beignets to start. They were light, covered in powered sugar, and piping hot. I wouldn’t order these again, but they were not bad. I had the farm salad with chicken as my entrée. My boyfriend tried the chicken and waffles. My salad was mediocre — kale, carrots, celery, radishes and goat cheese served with a side of dressing and chicken on top. The salad was absolutely not worth $ 15 — the dressing lacked flavor and the portion was small. The best part was the chicken and I will definitely just be getting the chicken if I come here again. I tried my boyfriend’s chicken and waffles. It was decent but I did not like the house-​made syrup.
Our server was great. He made the experience enjoyable and joked with my younger cousin who was visiting from out of town.
I’ll definitely be back, but I’ll probably come for a dinner experience to explore the full menu.

Whoa. This had to have ranked as the all time worst meal I’ve ever had — failure at every level. Here’s the breakdown:
— Walked in on a sat night and there was no maitre’d despite a waiting area full of people. After 5 minutes the manager came out and finally started putting names in and suggested we move to the minuscule bar area.
— upon moving to said bar area, we were completely ignored by two bartenders who walked past us at least 4 times. Mind you, the bar seated maybe 12, so three people w drink menus should have clued them to what what’s going on. I had to flag down a bar back to get anyone to help. The bartender wouldn’t make the featured drink on the bar («that?! We don’t make that anymore. I don’t know why that’s still up.») Also, they were out of tequila (?!) and the Moscow mule (renamed something like rusty tractor for reasons I don’t know) he poured was 90% bourbon which i normally wouldn’t complain about buuuuut maybe offer to split into two cups so it’s drinkable? Later in the meal, an Irish coffee was sent out w CURDLED baileys and when we sent it back it was implied that it was us who was wrong for not drinking it.
— server: nice enough girl but she wrote NOTHJNG down. I’d normally be ok w this but she got our water order wrong so that should have been a clue. It took 15 min to get an alcohol order in and another 20 to get it (after telling her I could see said order sitting at the bar to be picked up.) We ordered 4 drumsticks and the rest were sides — after 45 minutes we had to ask what was up and were told they were OUT OF DRUMSTICKS and had to make more (at which time she should have given us another option.)At the hour mark, after her avoiding is for 15 minutes we had to ask for everything to go and 20 min later we had it (including drumsticks). She was nice and tried but really missed easy opportunities to make it right. She comped us the drumsticks and awful drink.
— manager: we asked to see the manager when, at the 90 min mark we FINALLY got our bill. I watched him be told we wanted to talk to him, then saw him go the opposite direction and basically try to look busy in the hopes we would leave. I pointed him out when we were walking out (after watching him avoid us for 10 min) and we caught him going out the door. Upon complaining about the service from the bar, server and kitchen, we basically got a shrug and were told they had been super busy. Let me note that at NO time was the dining area full and even if you are busy, the problems we had weren’t related to how «busy» the place was. He told us to come back and «see Michael» next time (uh, WHY would I go back?!) but offered no apology or any kind of comp.
Long story short — this was a screw up on EVERY level and if there was a way to give negative stars, I would. I’ll never go back, «Michael» or not.

My husband’s favorite food is fried chicken, so I knew I had to bring him to Double Comfort at least once.
We thought the food was good. Some things could have been better. My waffle was just ehh, but the chicken itself was pretty solid. I had this very tasty drink with lavender syrup in it — thumbs up.
Service — I cant say it was HORRIBLE, but I’m 90% sure our server was high… which is fine if you can perform your job. She was unable to. Very friendly, but extremely scatterbrained, unattentive, and awkward.
I would come back, but unfortunately can’t say I would enthusiastically recommend this place to anyone.

Double Comfort got to the top of our list of «places we gotta get back to» and we had a decadent experience with our Sunday brunch.
We arrived a bit after they opened (they open early — 9am) and ordered coffee while perusing the menu.
Going to DC means giving up any semblance of eating healthy or attempting to control yourself. Micheal S. immediately sent me a message, telling me to order the chicken-​fried pork cutlet and waffle. Challenge accepted.
(I really wanted a biscuit, but they weren’t ready. Boo. WAFFLES AND BISCUITS. Dammit.)
Okay, I ain’t mad about the biscuit, because what I got was a huge piece of country-​fried pork, gravy and a fluffy waffle. I got about four bites in before it was all TOO MUCH and my arteries started to sludge up.
The spouse ordered chicken and waffles, and why he orders them when we’ve been to Memphis, I’ll never know. (DC serves Memphis-​style chicken, with the spice in the breading.) Good, he said, especially the chicken, but you know — not Memphis. The waffles do hold up well under the onslaught of gravy/​chicken/​syrup, that is a definite plus.
Good things to know — they locally source as often as possible, and donate a portion of every meal’s profit to a local food bank or food charity. Eat well, do good!

I was really disappointed with Double Comfort, both in food and in service. The waitress was super friendly, but did not know anything about the menu/​restaurant in which she was working… Upon arriving, I asked her about one of the specialty cocktails, specifically what one was made with. She didnt know, which is not a huge deal, but since there are only six or so specialty cocktails, you would think you would know if it was vodka based, etc. Another friend asked about the happy hour, because there was a sidewalk sign saying «Happy Hour 4−6». The server said she didnt think there was a happy hour because it was Saturday. When asked about the sign, she said «Oh, then maybe there is?» Never did get an answer.
So onto the food. The server mentioned that everything was farm fresh and organic. So I asked if the french fries were hand cut, she said absolutely. Everyone has their «things» and to me this is one of them, I love hand cut fries but will opt for something else if they are frozen. Sure enough when my friend ordered his poutine, the fries were frozen. I’m glad I saw this prior to ordering our entrée because I would not pay $ 4 for frozen, lackluster, GFS french fries. (It should be noted that everything is a la carte. It should also be noted the server did not know what that meant when we asked her if that was the case.) So I ordered a chicken thigh and macaroni and cheese. Both were solidly good. The mac and cheese was spicy, and the chicken was fried nicely. I also ordered coleslaw, which was inedible. It was literally strings of cabbage, soaked in vinegar.
In short, I will never go back to this place. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but in between our server’s lack of knowledge, and the mediocre food, you can find many other places to have a great dinner for the price.

I want to love Double Comfort. I really want to. They have a really cool model (donating a meal for each one purchased) and the service is always good, but in the three times I’ve been I managed to have some type of disappointment. Let me start with the good– they have mimosa buckets for brunch. Win! The fried pickles are yum and the shrimp po boy is tasty. Their sides however leave a lot to be desired. The coleslaw is too dry for my liking. During one trip my friend had soupy Mac and cheese. Nope. I’m from the south and believe mac and cheese should be slightly firm but cheesy, bubbly and golden brown on top. My last experience involved mac and cheese with a slice of pimento cheese on top. No. Nope. Nope. Nah. Everything underneath the pimento was ice cold. *insert 100 sad faces here*
When we alerted our server to this side dish travesty, he was very apologetic and quick to take it off our bill. I was unwilling to try it again. I cannot get down with pimento cheese slices on top of my macaroni and cheese and if this is the wave of the future, I want no parts. *insert another 100 sad faces* They do however have those mimosa buckets on weekends and are always friendly. Go during brunch and drink to your hearts desire.

I stopped in just by seeing the store front from the sidewalk. The atmosphere is pretty cool. I stopped in around 12:30pm on Wednesday and there were only a couple people dining.
I ordered the Chicken N’ Waffles with dark meat. The chicken was fried to perfection. They were seasoned with the right amount of spice and had a beautiful but not over done crunch. The waffles were their own beast. A crunchy but not hard outside with a soft almost cake like inside. The flavor did not disappoint. The most unique part was the bacon bourbon maple syrup. Its real maple syrup with pieces of bacon and bourbon whisky making for a unique and excellent topping.
My one real disappointment. Although the chicken was excellent, the waffles were excellent, the custom crafted syrup was excellent. They still put land o lakes buttery spread margarine on the plate. Come on guys, you craft an amazing meal like this give me real butter. I know if I asked for real butter I could of gotten it but it just insults their own culinary art to serve fake butter by default.
They support local food banks which is pretty cool.
I would definitely eat here again.

Double Comfort made it longer than I thought it would. It’s kind of in a weird location downtown that doesn’t seem to get as much attention as other places around it for whatever reason. When it first started out it was not getting the best reviews, but when I first went early on I really loved it even though the service was a bit slow and shaky.
The chicken here is dynamite, and I don’t really see how people can knock it. It’s perfectly fried with juicy tender meat under the crispy skin. I had several different pieces, and they were all great. There was some type of seasoning on the chicken that was absolutely delicious.
Flash forwarded about a year, and I tried it again. The chicken was still good, but I didn’t get that seasoning that I had tasted before. I’m not sure what was going on there. I also ordered a Po’Boy, which had a great remoulade on it but a bun that was completely burnt on one end and hard to eat. There was too much bun to chicken as well, but it still tasted good once I ripped off the burnt ends.
As for the other items I’ve tried, the pickles are excellent, but it’s hard for me to dislike a pickle really. The pork rinds are a little too hard for my liking. I thought I was gonna break a tooth on the ones I tried. The fries are good, but they didn’t jump out at me.
The first time I went I would have gave this place a solid 4, but they’re now teetering in between average and good, and I couldn’t bring myself to rate them as high as many of the other places around I’ve given a 4. I love fried chicken though, and I’ll be back again to give it a third shot.

Llast night after planning to go to Barley’s for dinner and drinks and realizing it was packed and there was a wait to be seated, we decided to head to Double Comfort! Their happy hour lasts from 3−7pm and includes $ 3 off draft beers (all local) and $ 3 off wine. They also have half off select apps! We ordered the fried pickles and corn fritters and both were super mouthwateringly tasty! And to top it off, our service was great! We decided to just sit at the bar since we were having only appetizers and drinks, but our bartender was very kind, talkative, and made us feel right at home! It was an overall great experience! I plan to head back again soon for brunch and will update my rating once I’ve enjoyed and actual meal! Oh, I also forgot to mention that they donate all net profits to local food pantries!

In a few words… its just not that great. I had high hopes for this place but it just didn’t deliver on food or service. Everything was just ok. They only thing that was a little better than ok was the Mac and cheese.
The server told us that everything is made from scratch and they do donate a meal for every meal purchased. That’s about all I felt really good about leaving this place today.
We ordered the fried pickles for an app-​just ok, the dipping sauce tasted like thousand island dressing. Definitely didn’t taste homemade.
For our meal we ordered a chicken breast ($ 6.50), Mac and cheese ($ 5.00), chicken fingers ($ 8.00), greens ($ 4.00) that were not cut up at all but rather in huge pieces, and a homemade biscuit ($ 2.00). The chicken fingers came with a homemade ranch that they charge $.25 for and you definitely needed 2 – 3 if you wanted enough for your tenders!
The server raved about the homemade desserts, but after trying the variety we had and everything being subpar, we passed on the key lime pie.
Not a fan, won’t be back-​because of the food and lacking service!

The food is awesome, the service could be better. We had a drink at the bar before going to a table. That apparently caused some issues signaling got a server. Everyone thought we had already been taken care of. So we had to flag someone down.
The bloody Mary’s were awesome albeit expensive. The food is reasonably priced. I got the mac cheese waffle. It was awesome. I’ve never had anything quite like it. It left me wondering what else I could make into a waffle! If you like mac n cheese, you’ll love it. My husband got biscuits and gravy. It was hearty and delicious. I appreciate that their partners are local and most items are organic and locally sourced.
Getting our meal took way too long though. They gave us southern donut holes to compensate and wow! They were delicious. I have faith that next time they will iron out the wrinkles in the service.

Surprisingly not busy on my visit which was a couple of Saturdays ago around 8pm in the evening. It was my first visit here so I had to try out the fried chicken. It was pretty good, but needed a dash of salt and a dousing of hot sauce to kick the flavor up a couple notches. Still, it was fried nicely and the meat was juicy. The wife’s chicken breast looked a bit pink though
Most of the sides shined. We shared spicy mac & cheese, bacon jalapeño cornbread, southern greens and mashed potatoes. The mac & cheese was really good, but I couldn’t detect the «spicy». I did notice the jalapeño in the cornbread waffles, but it was more like jalapeño flavor rather than heat; I still really liked them. I didn’t try the mashed potatoes, but the wife said they were gummy. The southern greens were nicely balanced and not overcooked. The only major knock on the sides was the price; pretty small servings for $ 4 – 5 each.
There were a couple kitchen mishaps (someone ordered a breast but got a thigh, and waffle maker was down for a while), but they were very apologetic. Our server was very pleasant.

I’m still a fan! I still haven’t gotten my hungry mitts on the chicken and waffles but intend on it one day. We took the gang here and they lost their little minds! Service was a bit slow and that was ticking me off until they got their rears in gear and then things got better. Four adults and two children and I didn’t want to hear who wanted what so I ordered the big cluck which turned out to be 2 pieces of chicken per person. Perfect!
And even with people taking a bit of time to eat their second piece, when they did it was still very warm and still crispy! The sides were great and reasonably priced although we did tell them they need to put the mac n cheese in a BIGGER bowl! There was almost a fork fight over the last bit.
Total bill for six with a nice tip for our server was around $ 96.00. Well worth it for chicken that is hot crispy and not even the least bit greasy.

Decided to stop by during brunch since I heard great things about it. The waitress seemed a bit preoccupied mentally, not sure what was going on, but the other waiter was able to help us out. So outside of the service, everything was great.
We ordered the comfort zone and chicken and waffles. The 3 pigs gravy was amazing, if you are a fan of southern biscuits and gravy, this is the closest thing to it in Columbus. For the price, they give a good amount so you won’t leave hungry. The biscuits flaked off and mixed well with the gravy, I want to try other things next time I go but I may just order this again. The chicken and waffles were great too, they have their own unique syrup which goes great with the fried chicken. If you are struggling between Double Comfort and somewhere else for a brunch choice, just go here, you won’t be disappointed.

This is a must visit if you like Chicken’n waffles…

Service is great, prompt, friendly, and location is spot on.

For some reason, I have an attachment to trying new fried chicken places even though I don’t have a special penchant for it. I think part of me wants to find THE fried chicken — the one that will send me over the edge in happiness and tell me that yes, my quest to find the perfect fried chicken was totally worth it. Unfortunately, Double Comfort was not the place for that. However, I am going to give them 4 stars due to other menu items and the fantastic service I experienced.
I took my sister here for a dinner date (my sister and I like to eat out a lot, don’t judge), and this seemed to be a safe place. My sister isn’t necessarily «picky» per say, but she won’t be eating like a Chopped judge anytime soon either.
While it was a Friday night, the place didn’t seem to be too packed. I couldn’t tell if it was a good or a bad thing. My thought process was that this place is in the hustle and bustle of N High, so it’d only get busier as the night went on. After all, it was only 6:30PM.
As other reviewers stated, there’s quite a wait for things. It took us nearly 10 minutes to be seated. Our «waiter», Phil, was actually the bar manager pulling double duty. He was definitely hustling and bustling between tables, and he did his best to be as attentive as possible to each and every patron. I wonder if they’re naturally understaffed or if someone called off; either way, I still received excellent service.
My sister and I started off with their version of poutine, which was topped with sausage gravy. Let me tell you, I will NEVER turn down some poutine. It’s up there with being one of my favorite dishes, and their twist didn’t disappoint.
With the poutine being as delicious as it was, I thought I was in for a treat. I ordered the roasted and my sister went for the fried. She ordered a side of mashed potatoes and I went the mac and cheese route. I didn’t enjoy my roasted chicken too much; it was overcooked and underseasoned. The mac and cheese though was my jam, and my sister didn’t understand why I kept eating it even when I stated I was full. Her fried chicken was the same — a tad overcooked and not seasoned well enough. I also didn’t care much for her taters. They were chunky and flavorless.
The real star of the show was Phil. As busy as he was, he gave us a lot of attention. He was especially proud of his vodka, which came in 3 flavors (pineapple, tea, and jalapeño.) Let me tell you, I like my vodka, and the fact that he spent so much time and energy into making some different flavors was very interesting. My favorite was easily the pineapple as I have always disliked tea and the jalapeño flavor made me parched. However, if you like it on the spicy side or if you like tea, you will definitely like those two.
All in all, the menu has some hit and misses. The alcohol selection is great and the atmosphere is awesome, and thanks to Phil I’ll probably be back. I’ll just order the poutine and mac and cheese and maybe stick to the bar.

I’ve gone to Double Comfort several times since they opened, and I’ve always teetered between 3 and 4 stars… until today.
THEY HAVE GLUTEN-​FREE FRIED CHICKEN.
THEY HAVE A BUCKET OF MIMOSAS AT BRUNCH.
Done. 4 stars.
Okay, so seriously – those two factors are well worth 4 stars for me. Nobody else in town (that I know of) does gf fried chicken, and can I tell you how amazing that crunchy, greasy deliciousness was?! It’ll take a little longer than normal, but I promise it’s well worth the wait. They fry it in a dedicated cooker (brownie points), and the chicken turns out flavorful, juicy, and perfect.
And that bucket of mimosas? It cost $ 24, and 4 of us split it with each getting two glasses. I think that’s a fantastic deal!
So why have I been wishy washy on my rating until now? Double Comfort isn’t perfect. You can read some of the reviews that talk about this. I’ve never had a bad experience, but I’ve definitely had some things go awry.
But they have tons of heart. Loads of it. They’re a social enterprise that aims to feed the hungry (not just the hungry customers). They’re also incredibly lovely people. I have never met anyone working there who was less than stellar. The people take feedback like pros, and they are genuinely concerned about your experience. Just today, the chef came out to personally bring my freshly-​fried chicken and to let me know to wait a few minutes before digging in. He noticed my breakfast potatoes were a tad too overcooked, and he voluntarily brought me new ones!
IMO, Double Comfort shines with traditional Southern staples: fried chicken, greens, etc. It’s when they step outside of that Southern comfort zone that things can go south (and not in a good way). But if you want to share some delicious fried chicken or a bucket of mimosas – count me in.
