History

Established in 1944.

Founded by Forest Smith near the end of the Second World War, Beechwold Hardware was perfectly positioned for the building boom that took place in what was then the far north part of Columbus, Ohio. Many, if not most, of the houses in the Beechwold neighborhood were built in the 1950’s and early 60’s and most of the still has hardware that was purchased at Beechwold Hardware.

In August of 1965 we became Beechwold ACE Hardware. We are the oldest ACE hardware in Columbus. About that time Jack Smith took over from his father and operated two other stores (In Upper Arlington and Grandview) in addition to this location. Beechwold also doubled in size to its current 5000 square feet.

Still family owned, Malcolm Moore (Jack’s son-​in-​law) is now running the store. We pride ourselves on being a friendly, knowledgeable neighborhood store with the selection of a «big box» store but without all the walking around!

Originally from the Chicago area, Mal attended the University of Utah. After graduating, he moved to Columbus with his future wife, Kathie. His future father-​in-​law, Jack Smith, began mentoring Mal on the intricacies of the hardware business. Mal now has over 30 years of experience in running a family owned hardware store, taking care of customers (both residential and commercial) and solving their problems.

Beechwold Ace Hardware deserves a Gold Star for Customer Service. If you have ever felt ignored, patronized, disrespected or just downright cheated by a business, you will immediately recognize the value in coming here. None of that happens at this place. Ever. Never. Customers can count on someone giving them a warm greeting/​farewell, asking if they need help and receiving knowledgeable assistance. This is a much appreciated distinction from most other service experiences. Perhaps, being a long time family owned business is a contributing factor.
You may pay more, or even less, than other major hardware stores, it just depends. At any rate, it is worth coming here. Don’t worry if you don’t know much, someone here does. Even if you do know much, you can appreciate having a discourse with someone similar minded. They go out of their way to assist you. When I rented a power washer, the guy patiently spent several minutes explaining exactly how to use it and loaded it in the car for me. He also put some gas in it to get me started, expecting none upon return. On this particular occasion, the price was better than at the Lowes or Home Depot. When my key fob battery was low in my car, they found the right battery AND literally replaced it FOR $ 5. Try getting that price and service at the dealership or online. Once, they cut tubing on the spot to meet my exact need. I have had keys made, door screens replaced and impromptu lessons on how to fix something. Just a few examples of my experiences with this store. Also, there are bins full of all types of nuts, screws, bolts, tubing, etc. This place can be a treasure trove for Mr. Fix It types and repairmen.
Even if I didn’t live in the neighborhood, I would probably come here. They are that awesome. Beechwold Ace Hardware recognizes the customers matter, as well as the little things. For that reason, I remain a long time, loyal customer.

Didn’t know which plant food to get for my Hydrangea today, so the Beechwold Hardware guy gets on the phone to a bud of his who owns a nursery. Nursery owner guy picks the best plant food and I’m on my way.
Have had equally good experiences in here several times since moving to the hood.

I’ve visiting the Beechwold Ace at least 3 times since moving to the area. The staff is always very helpful and friendly so I don’t have to spend any time hunting down the products I am looking for. Prices are fair and the store is actually pretty large. Before heading to that Big Box store come give this place a chance! I don’t think you will be disappointed :)

I can’t think of a better local hardware store. They staff are friendly and helpful and the store holds a lot more than you would figure from looking at it from the street. If they can’t help you, they will tell you where to find what you need — even if it is the hardware store down the street. They have also let me use their tools in house to make quick cuts that I could not do at home. In a world of big box stores — this family owned icon is a great asset to our community.

Admittedly, I know very little about tools and home improvement in general. As a result, I love this hardware store conveniently located very close to my house. I can be as naïve/​ignorant/​uneducated as I want, because the trustyworthy salespeople at this store will guide me the right way. Plus it’s a family owned local store! Also, if you’re going to be doing some spring/​summer planting, they have a great collection of seeds at the moment.

This place is still really amazing! I went in a few days ago to get some nuts and bolts for finish putting together a cat tower for my kitten. The employees were super helpful and one even told me that if what I had didn’t work to come right back and bring the cat toy with me and they would help me put it together! The cashier girl, like always, was also very friendly and cheery!

I’ve lived three blocks from Beechwold Ace for more than ten years. I have an older house and they rarely fail to have what I need, whether it’s a plumbing part, a quart of paint or a bag of mulch. They also rent tools, which has come in handy more than once. The knowledgable staff is always helpful, even with small inexpensive items. With this great resource around the corner I rarely vist the big box stores, and when I do I am usually disappointed. I also feel that the quality of the hardware is better at Ace stores.
We are moving out of state in the near future. I will truly miss this store!

My 18 year old daughter just moved to Columbus and into her first apartment by herself. We needed to figure out how to create a corner rod for hanging clothes. Malcolm helped us and had the PERFECT idea on how to custom make it. He is the nicest, most helpful person we met in Columbus! He also sent us to a fantastic auto mechanic. I know we will never go anywhere else. We were able to get everything we needed in addition to wonderful customer service. Very highly recommend Beechwold Ace Hardware!!!

I’ve been using this hardware (my favorite in Columbus) for 28 years. I’ve found all my paint colors here, most of my gardening tools, grass seed, chemicals, you name it. They have also repaired tons of things for us, even sharpened my good knives. They are the best! I’ve special ordered a few hard to find items too.
We are always treated well, even when I didn’t know much about the part/​tool I was trying to find. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

As first time homeowners, we make a few mistakes along the way. My hubby left gas in the lawnmower over winter and it wouldn’t start now that we need to mow again. I saw that Beechwold Hardware repairs lawnmowers, so I took it here early in the morning. They had it up and running by early afternoon at a fair price. I asked them to tune it up too, but they told me that it was in good shape and didn’t need it. They could’ve just done it and taken my money. I think that’s great!

Took 2 photography studio lamps to Beechwold; they fixed both of them for a very fair price. One of the photography lamps was somewhat of a difficult lamp part to repair, however, charges were very fair. Will use them again!

Yes, the big box stores are larger and have ten different types of what you do and more of what you don’t need.
But so does Beechwold Hardware. For a small hardware they have literally everything you can imagine, and if they don’t, they will call around and find you a place that does. These are the most helpful, knowledgeable, and just genuinely friendly people. Just tonight I came in, ten minutes before they were set to close looking for a replacement spark plug for my mower. Not only was someone immediately available and able to help me find the right one, they even took the time to look up my obscure brand and find me a perfect fit.
I’m the kind of person that likes to shop around, and let me tell you, their prices are VERY reasonable, better than the big box stores in most cases. Need a new garbage disposal? I checked Amazon, Home Depot, Lowes, Andersons, Sears, and you know what? Beechwold hardware had the lowest price on their Ace branded Insinkerator. Plus, I’ve noticed that they have a generally larger selection in terms of what you actually need. This store has never let me down, nomatter what I’m looking for.

This is my favorite hardware store. First off, it’s near my house, but even if location isn’t everything, they have a great selection of the things I need for home projects, parking is convenient, there’s always somebody who knows what they’re doing who can help, prices are competitive, and they trust and believe in their customers. There have been times I’ve gone there for a tool I would use only once and they’ve just let me borrow one that the store already has open. While they don’t have 50,000 square feet of space for 100 faucets or 50 toilets, they have access to anything from ACE and can usually have it in store by Thursday.

Beechwold Ace is one of those places that has kind of become a staple of Clintonville. Like that one uncle who is a little off kilter, but you like him even more for it. I spent innumerable hours there working on projects, Where the workers would not only allow me to be there, but hang out with me while I worked, and help me with my blueprints.
I agree with Peter that the floorplan is a bit alice in wonderland, but I honestly like the place more for it. I like that they worked with what they had, and managed to make it fairly functional.
I will note that it is incredibly handy to have close by. When something goes awry and the part you need will literally cost you a dime, driving to lowes seems a bit too much. That’s when you go to ace.
I also appreciate it on the level of size. I find lowes to be both intimidating and a little dangerous (I always end up leaving with so much more than I had intended). Ace isn’t so overbearing. I also am less likely to get the look of «What the hell is she talking about?» when I explain that I need a small metal piece that looks somewhat like a nose.
