Located in the heart of Colonial Beach, Virginia, Denson’s Grocery specializes in items that you normally would not find in the everyday supermarket. We carry Certified Angus Beef, Boar’s Head Deli Meats, fresh seafood, homemade salads, straight from the dairy items such as glass bottle milk, ice cream, free range eggs and all natural butter. You can purchase craft and micro brews (mix and match) and imported and local wines. Each Friday you can sample selected wines at our wine tasting paired with local and imported cheeses. Under the tent each Saturday, you can enjoy oysters ice cold on the half shell, charbroiled Drago Style, or fried. We feature east coast oysters, and bring in some of the best varieties available. We serve custom sandwiches and soups each and every day. But most importantly, we love to interact with our customers. It’s not all business at Denson’s Grocery. We aim to share our love for quality provisions while welcoming you to visit our family owned gourmet market.

History

Established in 2011.

Denson’s Grocery was originally established in 1912 by Fred and Jetta Denson. In 1945 their son Bernard and his wife Anne took over the reigns of what would be a family tradition. Their children, Jetta, Carole and Rocky assisted in the everyday operation. The business was sold in 1980. In 2011, Rocky and his wife Blaire decided to return to the Denson family roots/​, but they knew and understood that operating a traditional «Mom and Pop» grocery was not a viable option. Their goal was to offer quality food products not normally found in mainstream grocery stores. They identified and located some of the finest food purveyors in the area and introduced Colonial Beach to «FRESH». Our mission continues to be providing quality foods with a focus on healthy living. The 1^st and 2^nd generation was committed to making a positive difference within the community by providing quality groceries and service. The 3^rd generation shares that goal with a new focus on healthy, gourmet selections.

Business Owner

Rocky Denson spent 20 successful and enjoyable years as an employee and manager in the field of financial services. Blaire is currently the Director of the Virginia Partnership for Out-​of-​School Time, a statewide public-​private partnership dedicated to developing and expanding academic, social, emotional, and physical supports and services to school-​age children and youth across the Commonwealth of Virginia. Together, they share a love for community and children. They also have a deep appreciation for good food. This has led them to re-​establishing a longtime family business. Rocky enjoys the day to day operations of the market, and Blaire enjoys being involved in the family business when time allows. Rocky and Blaire have four children and two grandchildren.
