There’s been a recent marriage that will effect hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of Aggies, starting every single day for the next half century or more. Texas A&M University Main Campus, meet West Campus. Wellborn Passageway is complete and open. This harmonious union is technically know as the«Wellborn Road Grade Separation Project», more commonly know as the Wellborn Passageway. Until opening very recently(Bowtie will be cutting the ribbon making it official this Friday( )) Texas A&M University Main Campus and West Campus were not joined in a traffic friendly harmony. Being separated by the railroad and traffic lights the Aggie Spirit Bus Fleet, foot and bike traffic were always inhibited by the large amount of traffic on Wellborn Road and in fact, unfortunately students died on foot, motorcycle, bike and by train. This $ 34 million project supported by a $ 24 million Federal grant is now complete. It took the re-routing of the Union Pacific Railroad and all of those hours that we all spent in a snarled traffic nightmare with flashbacks of Houston, but it’s done. It’s open. I’ve used it several times already. It’s very clean, modern and fast to use,. I think the tall light poles coated in bricks look strange and unfinished, as if they are supposed to be poles for a canopy or something. The under-over allows A&M buses to bypass Wellborn Road and the railroad track(over 400 times per day) by just going under it(it’s open for the public cars as well like me), while having a well lit path for foot and bike traffic. If you have not seen or used it yet, this is now the safest way to get back and forth from main campus and west campus by car, foot, bus or bike. Finally the Texas A&M University Campus is not cut in half by trains and a state highway. As the new trees grow over the years this should become even more beautiful, perhaps even a place to stop under and enjoy the music of the Albritton Bell Tower during study. It’s that nice, check it out.
