I travelled many shops in the area, checking out frame selections whilst unknowingly surveying customer service and perhaps more importantly employee attitudes and friendliness. After a terrible experience at a local Wing dispensary – http://www.yelp.com/biz/wing-eyecare-newport-3?hrid=Nu0ahWWZc136bucEGZrgeA – I turned to this shop when I remembered how helpful they were when I was looking at various frame options. They got me an appointment next-day, and I saw Dr. Bowman. She was wonderful. I do not think I have ever had a more comprehensive refraction. She genuinely, took the time to understand my lifestyle and the experiences I was having with my eyes. I had brought along previous pairs of frames and was happy to check the RX and adjust mine based on how she thought my eyes were changing across time. She then put the test frames on me with my new RX and we adjusted the power further. Thank you, thank you! I was, and still feel grateful for her time and consideration. After my Wing experience, I would have paid $ 100 out of pocket to see her, but it was only $ 29. Next I sat down with Rachel, to work out frames and lens, or just lens really, as I knew the frame already. She was happy to let me play with the various photochromic/transition lens samples and handled my more technical questions with patience. She also surprised me the news that VSP would cover my frames in-full! VSP/vision care in the US seems like such a racket, luckily I found friendly and helpful faces!

Getting new glasses is always an ordeal, because I always go to Thoma&Sutton. Employees do not care if or when you get your glasses and are not held accountable. Walmart has much better service for glasses that are probably fabricated in the same lab. I ordered a very expensive pair of glasses– no line bifocals with auto tint, anti reflective coating, anti scratch, etc– the works, on 3⁄14. I was told they would be ready by 3⁄24. On 3⁄26 I called to inquire on the status as I had not been contacted. I was curtly told that the glasses were not in, not to call again, and that they would call me when the glasses were ready. Obviously this person did not look up my order to even check on the status or anything. On 4⁄2 I again called. This time I was informed that not only were they not ready, they had not even been ordered from the lab and it would be at least another week before I could receive them! Finally got them 4⁄19. Total time for very overpriced glasses: 5 weeks ! I ordered a similar pair from WALMART and got them for half the price in 5DAYS. The Walmart pair are excellent quality.

Dr. Bowman at this office has been my eye doctor for about 5 – 6 years now and she is great. I get annual eye exams because I wear contacts. They work with my insurance and there aren’t any superfluous charges. They also don’t pressure you to buy your glasses, contacts, etc. through them, but give you both your glasses and contact prescriptions upon request. You can get both your eye exam and glasses/contact fitting all at once, so easy, easy. Great, friendly staff overall.
