Eight years after moving to Miami, I’ve finally found a salon where I consistently come back! I’ve probably been here about four times over the last year and a half and each time I’m impressed.
I initially found my stylist (Adriana) by asking for a junior-​level hairdresser because I was nervous about the price since I get both highlights and a haircut. Once I visited her, I’ve never gone to anyone else. She really listens to what I’m looking for but also gives great ideas for how to spice up my style a bit. The rest of the staff I’ve encountered are also very friendly.

The prices are steep but I’ve found that anywhere decent in Miami is expensive (and some places that aren’t great aren’t cheap either). While parking in the Grove can be a challenge, Detlev is in one of the better locations for it. There are a lot of street spots along Grand Avenue, an open lot directly across from it, and if you’re desperate, the covered CocoWalk lot about a block away.

I’ve lived in Miami for over 4 years, and never found a hair stylist I liked. I tried a walk-​in appoint here with Adriana today, and was blown away. Best hair cut I’ve ever gotten in Miami. Excited to have found my new stylist!

Do NOT become a client and give this business your email address. Detlev is an inveterate spammer. I receive frequent unsolicited emails from Detlev — sometimes two or three each week. And no matter how many times I choose the «unsubscribe» option in the email they keep filling my mailbox with irrelevant comes-​ons and offers.
This is not only annoying, it violates the CAN-​SPAM Act.
This rat hole went out of business once before and if there is a benevolent and merciful God, if karma is more than a word on a Scrabble board, the imbecile responsible for spamming his or her own customers should be cast into the eternal lake of fire where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Poor service!
I arrived about 10 minutes late, definitely my fault. I was ready to apologize when I was greeted and told I couldn’t be seen at the time. Fair enough, I was late. But then I was told I couldn’t be seen at the time because it would take too much time to fix my hair because it looked bad and was in poor shape. Who says something like that to a customer? What would have happened if I was on time, would my hair have been in too poor of shape to fix even in the allotted time? It’s a shame. I would have been happy to return at a different time and pay a generous tip for being late the first time had they just had a decent conversation with me. Not cool!

I’m so happy I found this salon. The products, the atmosphere, the service and above all my hairstylist are AMAZING. I have curly hair and Erin is a genius with my hair. They look great curly or with a blow dry. And the cut still looks good after few weeks. Erin is a professional hair architect:)
Their prices are more than fair for the services provided.

It only took me 5 years, but I finally found my go-​to salon. If you want eyebrows that people notice for all the right reasons-​go to Alicia. For a blowout that gives you hair like you’ve never had before– go to Adriana. And for makeup that will draw more compliments than a bride on her wedding day– go to Hector. So glad to have found this wonderful little salon!

Jim is the best I’ve been going to him for 3 years now and my hair looks amazing. I believe he’s the best stylist in the saloon, great energy, amazing experience everything you want for your hair.

I’ve avoided trying an Aveda salon in the past because I was happy getting my typical $ 20 trim from my hometown stylist. When I moved to Miami, that was no longer an option and I knew I’d be paying at least double wherever I went, but I wanted to make sure I was well taken care of, which is why I chose Aveda. I was matched up with Tanner, who did a fantastic job. He was very communicative and detail-​oriented, and he gave me a fabulous blow-​out with tons of body for my limp hair. While the price was a little more than what I’m used to, it was well worth it!

Update: I learned awhile ago Melisa moved. I decided to next try someone at the Miami beach location as its the location most convienant for me. While my results there were not bad, I be had worse, I wasn’t happy enough to return. I was charged $ 150 for a process less than a partial. I also was pushed for additional/​other services (olaplex, cut with another stylist) that were other than my main concern which was full head highlights. So after $ 200 (including tip) I left with wet hair, less than partial highlights, I ended up needing to fix a piece with huge roots in front myself, and the color was actually brassy requiring me to use purple shampoo which I hadn’t needed in years.
I searched through Unilocal,instagram, Facebook etc for months trying to find a stylist I was confident would give me the highlights I wanted. I had a huge conference for work and could wait no longer so I made an appointment with another stylist at at the grove location. I was booked with Renee wish the bio said had worked with detlev himself for years, he was even her stylist when she was a teen! I booked online and she gave me one of the best highlights I have ever received. She got the color I wanted, placement to add dimension on my thinner hair, and no bleeding. I recieved so many compliments on my color in NY, and my hair was even back the whole trip.
A little more feedback on Renee is after aveda schooling she studied color 2 yrs at Van Michael in Atlanta, loves doing blonde color, and works Monday which is almost nonexistant in the industry. Cut, color, dry under $ 300. (*long hair) I feel very fair price. Couldn’t be happier and will be returning regularly.

I have been a proud aveda salon customer for over three years. Prior to this, I frequented Pyure salon in coconut creek, until I found Candice and Detlev in the grove, a wonderful salon with plenty of street parking. The aveda service is like no other — your appointment always runs on time, they are efficient and helpful. The service is always excellent. They offer you delicious teas and relaxing head and hand massages during your shampoo. The products, while pricey, make you feel like you’re at the spa all the time.
Prior to my aveda experiences, I attended many other salons in Miami and Kendall, and spent countless hours sitting in a chair waiting for someone to so much as look at me. I cannot stand the typical Miami salon environment, where people get serviced based on how frequent they attend the salon, and not their appointment time, where your timeliness never matters, and you sit in a chair until someone decides they are ready to help you.
This will NEVER happen at an aveda salon, and certainly not at detlev. Go get your color done with Candice and thank me later.

I’ve always loved Aveda products but finding their salon close to home is just fabulous! Candice is awesome!
I loved her work from day one.
I came in one day asking for a bang trim and she gave me one on the house since she said I didn’t have much to cut. I then asked her about my hair cut at the time and state of my hair.
Note — My hair was shoulder length and damaged after a very bad color job I had done two years ago. I had be barreling with growing it out and bringing it back to life but I was just wasting time at the salon and money on trying to repair something that needed a good cut.
Candice never once made me feel pressured on going short but noted that it was the right thing to do unless I wanted to keep trimming monthly and keep loading up on treatments.
So a month later, I booked an appointment with her and got a great new style.
When I left the salon My hair was at that fashionable ear length and I felt wonderful. She cut just enough to get rid of most of the damage and left just right for me to still be able to put it into a pony tail if I wanted to.
Not only that, I kept getting loads of compliments after her work and now that two months have gone by, I still get compliments on the layers she gave me.
I’m so happy with her work at the salon that I want to go back one day next week for a little shop up from her and to add a little color.
I’m hoping for the best but I feel as though I will be in good hands with her.

Linda is a phenomenal stylist and colorist and has been taking care of me and my hair for the last 8 months. She makes me feel welcomed, renewed, and beautiful every time! My only qualm with this salon is the pricing but if you can afford it you will definitely get what you pay for in every sense. The staff is great and treat you with the hospitality and friendliness you expect to receive from a quality salon such as Detlev.

I had really high hopes for a hair cut here. My hair stylist was very bubbly and fun to talk to but she unfortunately missed the mark on my #1 request– keep the length. I also mentioned that I was allergic to Aveda hair color and five minutes later she asked me to come back for her to do my color there (hello, ALLERGIC). She used way too many products and my hair turned oily the moment I got home, on top of the fact that she had to finish the blow dry with a flat iron as the products used were not adequate and it kept frizzing up. I felt I was not heard and now I am two months out before I can have my normal hair length back. Too bad.

I am a former client of this salon, from the time it was Aruj and now as Detlev. I have been happy with the color by Melissa but the customer service is very poor. I have had last minute cancelations/​substitutions by the salon and have had to wait 20 – 30 minutes from my appointment time. My last time at this salon in May 2014, I had taken time off from work for my haircut with Linda and needed to return to work after the appointment. She was 30 minutes delayed (at least) so I left to return to work without getting my hair cut.
I have waited several months to post this review, hoping that the salon would contact me and try to make it right. Despite being a LONG time client of this salon, I have not heard anything from them.

Really great experience the last two times I went here.
I got an appointment quickly and the receptionist was really nice and easy to talk to. I walked in and had a big greeting from three employee’s and they offered me an espresso which of course I had to have. Jim was nice as could be, great haircut, understood what I wanted and had no pretense. The girl washing my hair did a phenom job as well and gave a nice little brain rub for five minutes. All in all both times at Detlev were super positive. The ONLY reason I am giving four and not five stars was the first time I went there my Coconut Grove resident price was 25.00 and then when I went there a second time it was 45.00. I was also not told how much it would be when I booked the appointment. It would not have stopped me from going though. Pricing should be consistent for a basic men’s wash and cut though right? Please Detlev employee’s keep those smiles going. It’s nice to see. Jim, great cut my man!

I had a first time appointment today at this salon with Mercedes. I was in desperate need of a haircut and being a frizz-​prone-​curly-​hair-​flat-​iron-​addict living in humid miami, I’ve been contemplating a keratin treatment. I was terrified but walking out of the salon today I am IN LOVE! My hair has NEVER looked better. Mercedes took wonderful care of me and gave me a great cut to flatter my face. She was also super personable and professional, couldn’t have asked for a better stylist. I have another appointment for a cut in October, and looking forward to going back. And as long as the keratin looks and stays half as amazing as my hair does now, I’ll be back when it’s time for that as well!

Terrible Service!!! So Frustrating!!!
They canceled my appointment 30 minutes before I was scheduled to have my hair colored!
The woman I spoke to was unapologetic and dismissive when she told me that I would not be allowed to come in for the appointment I made over 2 weeks ago.
I am especially annoyed by this because I received several automated messages confirming my appointment throughout the previous week including one I received shortly before the cancellation.
This place gets a big thumbs down!

This is the salon I have been seeking my entire adult life.
A stellar haircut at a lovely salon at a great price!
Adrianna, my stylist, listened to what I wanted and did an awesome job.
Oh! And the icing on the cake: complimentary scalp, head and neck massage.

Ok I LOVE Aveda. I’m from Minneapolis and have been going to Aveda for over 25 years. So I know the mission and all the concepts. I always first try to find stylist from Aveda and it has always worked out for me.
I do come here just to see one stylist and his name is Eric. I love him! He is awesome and does a very good job with color and haircut. His blow outs are the BEST! I come to him just for blow outs and even my friends just want him to do blow outs. He also does my boyfriends haircuts and he is very precise about his cuts and styles.
As far as the salon goes, it is a small quaint salon and smells just like Aveda right from the Bat. If you are not familar with Aveda products you should look up their mission. They have been natural and organic ingredients for many years before the trend of organic and natural started in the recent year. I use aveda on my daughter and my house is like a mini Aveda store because I stock up. From hair care, skin to makeup it feels better to support a local salon that does not use harsh chemicals or toxins on your skin or face. Even the hair color is naturally derived as much as possible which beats all the toxins we put into our hair in regular hair color.
They have many different services and you will pay slightly more going to an Aveda salon but you can spend less and lather all sorts of who knows what that is going into your body and skin or just spend a little more and do something good for your body and mind :)

They offer water and coffee!
The stylists work very hard and are very professional!
Aveda products are the BEST!
