History

Established in 2000.

When you become apart of the Royce Gracie Jiu-​Jitsu of Fresno team, you become apart of the most direct lineage in the Central Valley! Jiu-​Jitsu came to Brazil in the early 1900’s when Mitsuyo Maeda Koma met Gastao Gracie. Koma taught jiu-​jitsu to Gastao’s son Carlos Gracie. In 1925 Carlos and his brother, Helio, opened the first Gracie Jiu-​Jitsu Academy in Rio de Janiero. As Carlos grew older, Helio took over as instructor & fighter. Helio adapted the style of Jiu-​jitsu for his smaller frame & emphasized the use of leverage. Royce Gracie is one of Helio’s 9 sons & learned jiu-​jitsu from his father. Royce moved to Los Angeles at age 18. His fighting career began in 1993 after defeating 3 opponents in the first Ultimate Fighting Championship & went on to win the it 2 more times! Tosh Cook was one of Royce’s top students in LA. He followed in Royce’s footsteps & competed in MMA. Tosh moved back to Fresno & opened Royce Gracie Jiu-​Jitsu of Fresno. Tosh Cook is the Founder and co-​owner of Royce Gracie Jiu-​Jitsu of Fresno. He is widely regarded as one of the top martial arts instructors in the Central Valley. His accomplishment include: 9 – 4 professional fight record in the WEC (World Extreme Cagefighting), KOTC (King of the Cage), GC (Gladiator Challenge), and IFC (International Fighting Championship). Teaching Credentials and certifications include: Brown Belt certified by UFC Champion Royce Gracie, 2nd Degree Black Belt in Shou Shu Karate, Certified Law Enforcement Defensive Tactics Instructor, and Level II Combatives Instructor for the United States Army National Guard.

A prolific competitor, Tosh Has competed in the Pan Ams Jiu-​Jitsu Championships, No Gi Pan Ams, United States Army Combatives Championships, United Gracie Championships, American National Championships, California State Championships, Copa Pacifica de Jiu-​Jitsu, Grapplers Quest and wasand was ranked as high as the #4 amateur kick boxer in California.

Stopped by this evening for the first time. Was in town for work and decided that rolling and training was better than drinking and watching tv in the hotel.
Drop in fee was the standard $ 20. Instructors were very knowledgeable and patient. Other students were very cool and welcoming to a visitor in their school. No egos, just students wanting to learn and get better. Will be back the next time I’m in the Fresno area.

Haven’t been attending this place long, but I have attended a handful of classes, as well as a personal lesson with Tosh. Gotta be honest, I was looking at few other places in preference to Royce Gracie of Fresno, but I walked in because I have a close buddy who has been training here for quite awhile. Let me tell you, I am glad I did. Everyone here is awesome, and if you don’t go in there with a chip on your shoulder and something to prove, you will be treated like family here from day one. BJJ is a beautiful art, and it is awesome to see instructors with such a passion for the art as well. This place breaths the Gracie philosophy. I think a thing that was a real decision maker for me too is I was speaking with Tosh and he said something along the lines of, «We can train you up and you can go to a tournament and lose. That is fine, and you will learn from it. What Royce and I can’t have is someone attacking you on the street and putting you or your family in danger, and you losing. That is something we can’t have happen!» This man has helped train our armed forces and law enforcement. As well as, hosted charity events. That to me is respectable trait of this man and facility. They’re great with kids too. Family owned, husband and wife with a kid of their own. If this is something you have been debating to do, give it a shot for one week, guarantee you will be coming back…

This is a great place to get started if you are new to Brazillian Jiu-​Jitsu or want to introduce your kids to the sport, and it has a really friendly, family oriented atmosphere. However this place is very expensive in comparison to other local Martial Arts & MMA gyms in the area, and the only way you will meet and or learn from Royce Gracie himself at this gym is to pay extra once or twice a year to attend a seminar that other gyms members are also invited too! Great if you’re not a member of this gym, but I feel that paying members should get to meet Royce at no additional charge and non gym members should have to pay the seminar fees, not the members who already have to pay a hefty membership fee because Royce’s name is in the gym name. It is cool that Royce actually signs and certifies member’s belts during belt promotions but that only happens at the seminars that you have to pay extra for. Tosh & Brittany are great teachers of basic Gracie Jiu-​Jitsu, and have awsome & encouraging personalities but their gym is just to exspensive for me. I would give this gym 5 stars if it wasn’t so expensive and higher levels of BJJ were taught.

Very comfortable place to begin or continue your BJJ training. Tosh Cook is a very understandable guy who does this for the love of the game, not for a profit. Trained there for almost 2 years and gained a lot of friends in the process. Moved for school purposes but I will always consider it my humble beginnings. If your looking for some hardcore MMA gym that is open 24/​7, better go somewhere else. If your looking for somewhere to really learn the Gracie way, go to Royce Gracie JJ of Fresno. One thing I learned was to leave your ego out of the gym and go in there with an open mind.

For a while I’ve been wanting to learn Jiu-​Jitsu but didn’t know how to start. It can intimidating walking into a gym not knowing anyone or anything. I took advantage of an introductory offer offered by Royce Gracie Jiu-​Jitsu of Fresno. From the beginning Tosh Cook and the staff made me feel very comfortable. As Tosh was showing me how to tie my belt he told me to always follow the «house rule», have fun. Even though I didn’t know any Jiu-​Jitsu, I was made to feel like part of the group and the fellow students were very helpful. Tosh is an excellent instructor with a lot of experience. I wanted to learn Gracie Jiu-​Jitsu because it is based on self-​defense. Tosh Cook has a direct lineage to Gracie Jiu-​Jitsu by being trained by Royce Gracie. I enjoy going to class because I learn self defense, get a great workout, and I follow the «house rule»…have fun.

I’ve been bringing my son to the peewee class for over half a year now and have absolutely loved our experience thus far! My son looks forward to class and to working with the instructors and other students. The instructors are patient, kind and very knowledgeable. He has been learning the fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as well as other important life skills you learn with any organized group or individual sport. We’ve had the opportunity to attend an anti-​bullying seminar and look forward to attending more of the great seminars lined up. Overall I rate Royce Gracie Jui Jitsu five stars and highly recommend them.
