Intoxalock

My boyfriend had to have one installed for stupid things he had done years and years ago. He was going through the process to get his license back, and getting one of these installed was part of that. He made an appointment to get it installed, and the guy who installed it said he was missing some papers from the welcome packet that came with his device… including his lease. He also was supposed to get paperwork for a rebate of the installation cost. He called Intoxalock and requested both his lease and the rebate papers…1 day shy of 60 days later — and 4 calls to Intoxalock saying «they sent it already» he has not received any of the papers and is now unable to recalibrate the machine because he «hasn’t signed the lease» that they never sent him… so he ended up having to remove the device all together to be able to get to work tomorrow morning. They also have taken random amounts of money from his bank account (on top of the monthly fee) and no one has been able to tell him why the money was taken out, and it has yet to be refunded.

Their interlock device is garbage compared to other companies. It caused a problem with my ignition and they told me it’s because of the heat. Took me at least 5 minutes trying to start my ignition and this was only one of the issues with intoxalock. They say I’m here to help but the reality is that they are here to not explain anything and charge for everything possible. Note that the lock out is 5 days and you have order a new unit before you’re car can run again. And if that unit arrives after your service time is up, you are officially screwed! Do your research before using this company.

Along with all of the other reviewers, I too have had severe issues with Intoxalock. I had more than one device of theirs cause issues for me. There was two days in a row that a manual warm-​up of my device did not work and it proceeded to tell me one minute that my BAC was through the roof to .000 the next time. I, of course, was charged for this. And after that incident (since it was not the first time their devices went from .000 to .023 back to .000) I called customer service and expressed my shear confusion as to why I was being charged for a device not working in the cold. I was talked down to, I was demeaned, and I was treated like a moron. I continued to sift through customer service till I was on the phone with someone who claimed to be the supervisor of customer service. This woman was beyond rude. She had me in tears I was so upset. To the point where I expressed how I felt this company was one big scam and I was OUT.
I called the DMV of the state I had gotten a DUI in. (As a little background information I was 18 and charged with possession of alcohol which resulted in a habitual offense when I was charged with a DUI at the age of 21). He expressed his distrust in Intoxalock as a company and as a device as well. In fact, the state of NH is taking Intoxalock off of their list of vendors, believe it or not HAH. Anyways, he had absolutely no problem with me ripping this thing out and going to another company; Draeger Interlock Devices to be exact. So that’s exactly what I did.
I got my device removed, paid $ 401.76 to Intoxalock for multiple fees such as my early termination fee, processing fees (or so I thought), a lockout fee, and shipping and handling fees for my final device. Not to mention another $ 55 to the local car garage that ripped it out for me, and gave me a killer deal since it is usually $ 100 for someone to rip it out for you.
So I cancel my account, pay off the total fees everything included (or so I was told) and removed all of my information from my account (my credit cards and such so I wasn’t going to get any hidden unexpected charges.) Alas, I have received another bill in the mail to which I called Sam in accounting or customer pay help or whatever they call it, who assured me I paid off everything and that bill must have been prior to such actions. YET I received another bill from them for the same processing fee that was «included» and «paid off» and so on and so forth.
Before I called Intoxalock again today, (I now have Sams direct phone line since I was waiting up to an hour and a half on hold to get ahold of a customer service representative who then couldn’t answer any of my questions and transferred me to Sam directly), I figured I would share a QUICK (yes that means I had even MORE issues with this company) update with the world. Also as a side blurb, if you’re a new customer, your phone call is transferred immediately, if you press the number that directs your call to canceling your account, you will wait for hours on end.
Oh did I mention I was being held accountable as Intoxalock waited for my device to be sent back to them? The device one of their representatives had in their possession. Well, that is after Intoxalock/​Sam and I had them send the shipping label to the CORRECT GARAGE. They sent the return package to a garage that I have NEVER been to in my ENTIRE LIFE. And were waiting on ME to figure it out. I had to make calls all around until finally I asked them where the heck they sent it and got it sent to the correct place. That is if they have, I will check with Sam about that one today as well.
I have never had a good experience with this company.
I have never had a BAD experience or one even SIMILAR to my Intoxalock experience, with Draeger Diagnostics. Thank god for real humans who don’t play corporate take-​over.
I’d also like to sign off saying, Intoxalock, you do not have any right to read into my account as you have all of the other reviewers to try and «correct» them on their review of you. How you can mosey around your company’s privacy policy and customer disclosure policy to be able to post their personal information without their permission on a public viewing webpage, is far beyond me. Maybe even so far beyond me that someone could bring you to court for such a breach of someone’s personal and sensitive information.
So please, do not respond to my message. I’ll call Sam in a bit to continue paying all of these «hidden» fees that I was told were never going to occur let alone, that I had «already paid my account off in full».
Yikes, what a headache.
Do not give them your money. It will never be enough.

I’m impressed that Paige from customer service called me to speak about my problems with Intoxalock so I’m changing my last review from 1 star to 3. She also waived the extra data processing fee that I was being charged from my last lockout that happened because of my car being serviced. Their customer service might not be so bad after all, but the technology of these devices sucks and I still don’t think they should be that sensitive to go off with any alcohol in the air, outside the car or in. If I’m not drinking and driving, (or using mouthwash) it shouldn’t be failing me multiple times.
This company has me so irritated.
First off, let me acknowledge the fact that I know it is my fault I’m in this situation of needing this company in the first place. I was young and dumb. FYI, I am completing my IID requirement after several years have passed. I also haven’t drank in years.
I have gone through 4 devices in 3 months. The first one never worked. It definitely was faulty. They did not charge me for it. The second one I had no issues. For two months I never failed a retest and always blew green. I was thinking, hm. This is easy. Why is everyone complaining so much?
Got a re-​calibration. Second day, about five minutes of driving, device locked out. Of course, was charged for it. I assumed it was faulty. I did exactly what I had done the last two months with the other one where I had no failed retests. Got new one in a couple days. Exact same thing happened. When I was literally at the same location? Now I’m pissed.
When I call, the guy is nice and tries to help me figure out what it could be. Could be from your wind-​shield wiper cleaner? Car fragrance? Cleaning materials? Etc. Basically, he said it could fail if there is any alcohol molecule in the air. Okay. I admitted maybe it was from my wind-​shield wiper cleaner. Hung up and thought about it. First off, I hadn’t used my wind-​shield wiper or any fragrance or cleaning things for days. The time I did, week or two ago, I passed every retest. I haven’t drank in so long. It seems so fishy. Like they purposely set it up to do this. Why have I passed every retest then suddenly it is «so sensitive» to any alcoholic molecule in the air?
Also, maybe this is in one of the many papers they give us but it’s like every time I call they tell me something totally new. At first it was not to eat or drink for at least a half hour before you drive. Which I complied with. Then it’s that it could be anything even one alcoholic molecule in the air. Can be from car freshener, windshield fluid, etc. ok thanks for telling me this, no one has told me before? Then when I called today the lady said «we usually tell people to call Penn Dot right away when they fail a test». Ok, thanks. I had no idea and have failed two in last week. The annoying thing is I cannot think of what it could be that made it fail so I can’t prevent this from happening. Oh wait that’s right, because I didn’t do anything I wasn’t supposed to do!
I am now paranoid to drive and have already arranged to seek alternate options for the next 9 months. It’s a shame because for someone who has turned their life completely around, it’s depressing that I can’t drive because these machines are FAULTY. They act like it’s your fault and try to tell me the device detected alcohol on my breath? Look, I don’t eat or drink for hours before I drive, I had NO issues the first device that was in my car and I haven’t had an alcoholic drink in 2 years. So me paying $ 200 for intoxalock’s faulty devices is absolutely ludicrous. I truly believe they set their devices to fail on you so that they make more money. It’s just odd how it is «suddenly that sensitive».

Any other company will be better for you. They have the worst: customer service, pricing, technology, and power drain on your cars battery. Find someone else.

I had this installed on to my daughter’s car voluntarily as a safety measure for her. It was installed one month ago and she has been stuck on the road numerous times due to the unit DRAINING the battery. The other day, she had to pay $ 100 to get the car jumped. This is a new car!
When I called, I told them I would like to get it taken off. It cost $ 120 to install and $ 120 to remove. Intoxalock REFUSED to remove future charges for the next two months. I already paid $ 83 for the first month and now they are charging me $ 53 for the next two months for a product that I no longer have and KILLS your car voltage!
I am now disputing with my credit card company. Do NOT choose this horrible product or company!

Customer service was awesome… When I first called I was very confused about what all I needed to do to get my license back and how to go about getting my Breathalyzer installed. The girl at customer service went through the whole process and answered all my questions. She even found a installation center right next to my work that was open till 7, so I could go after work and not have to take off early. Having to get one of these things in your car sucks!!! Let me tell you I defiantly wont let this happen again but I would recommend this company to anyone if you have to get one put in your car.

0 stars if possible, this company is horrible. Go with anyone else. They are more expensive than competitors, and they are friendly until you sign the contract, then you will be on hold for an extended amount of time if you need help. Their less-​than-​competent technician forgot to install the new unit at my last calibration, resulting in a lockout and my car being stuck at the airport parking lot, and they could do nothing to fix it other than recommend that my car be towed to the auto shop to have the right unit be installed. They offered to pay for all taxi, parking, towing charges associated with this but never did. They just ignored it. Also, the unit drains your battery. If you don’t drive your car every day, you will have to jump start your car when you want to drive it. Their solution: buy a jump starter from wal-​mart. I encourage everybody to find a different company, they are not what they seem.

If you are forced to have this equipment, there are several choices of companies to use. Whatever you do, do not choose this one.
I had to have both a car unit and a home unit, so I have lots of experience with this company. FYI, the home unit is portable so that when I traveled overnight, I had to take it with me and submit a breath sample three times per day. I mention that because it is relevant to my story.
BTW, I have had several instances of receiving poor customer service with Intoxalock, but I will relate the most egregious. When I was traveling I received an invalid reading on my car unit. It was not high enough to cause a lockout, thank God, but it was high enough that it could have gotten my probation revoked and sent me to jail. Fortunately, I had my other unit, my home unit, in the back seat at the time. I pulled over and submitted a sample into my home unit. It read .000 as it should since I had not consumed any alcohol. When I contacted Customer «Service» (I use that word advisedly) the woman insisted that the false reading from the car unit «could not possibly be wrong» and that there was alcohol on my breath or there were fumes in the car. I explained that the other unit was in the same car and was breathed into by the same person and she had the audacity to suggest that what I described was impossible. Can you imagine? Now, the home unit has a camera attached to it, so if I got in a bind with the law, I could have eventually proven that I had not committed a violation, but why should I have to do that when it was clearly a malfunction of the car unit?
Later I called back and talked to another representative who was a reasonable man who said, «Machines are machines. They are not infallible.» I described the situation and he agreed to put a notation in my file confirming that it was an equipment malfunction.
Of course, if it can malfunction and show a .016, what’s to keep it from malfunctioning and showing a .090 and causing a lockout and revocation of probation? The answer is… nothing.
These people keep pushing these devices with faulty and outdated detection processes and they assume absolutely no responsibility for malfunctions. They don’t even admit to the possibility!
There should be a class action suit brought against this outfit.
P. S. I just tried to call Intoxalock to cancel l my account and since all their Customer «Service» people were busy, I was given the option of inputting my phone number for a call back. I punched in my number and then the robovoice read back my number and asked me to press 1 to confirm. When I did, the robovoice asked me to input my phone number (again). I did so, heard it repeated back to me, and pressed 1 (again). Then I was asked to input my phone number… well, you can see where this is going. If their phone system doesn’t even work, do you want to trust them with your freedom?

I would literally give them 0 stars if i could. First off =, let me just begin by saying that when i first got the system installed in my car it was installed improperly so my car literallly DID NOT work for over 10 days! then when i finally got it fixed it worked for a couple of days then i was stranded twice due to them sending me the wrong product for my car. While my car was not working for those ten days the battery was completely drained because what they dont tell you is that even when your car is off that damn device is draining you battery. Well turns out the tried not to reimburse me for that! and even when i bought a new battery it drained thT ONE AS WELL!!! Each time i would call to speak to a supervisor they would never call back. EVER! they avoid the problems. Now, due to the installation issues, i had to call to make sure that when they unistalled the device it was done properly, ONCE AGAIN NO CALL BACK!!! so days later i called again… they said that i now owe money for the upcoming month as well!!! wtf! they have proof that i called but will not mark it off. I HAVE HAD THE WORST EXPERIENCE WITH THEM FROM THE BEGINNING!!! DO NOT DO IT!!!

I would give zero stars if I could. This company is terrible. The product is terrible. And the customer service… oh the customer service… I would rather talk to a monkey on the phone than any of the horrible people I had to deal with from Intoxalock. I was hung up on, I was lied to, I even had a woman at one point refuse to tell me her name, refuse to put me on the phone with a manager, and then hung up on me. Intoxalock exists only because there are no other options on the market in certain states. If they had to deal with customers or any competition they would have folded. I highly recommend you find ANY OTHER OPTION than this company if you can. If not, good luck, they are a miserable group of human beings who are horrendously bad at their jobs. To be more specific, as far as the lying goes, I was told by Intoxalock that because I had a DUI in Arizona, and had moved to Washington, that I would need to have an intoxalock on my car for 18 months for Arizona, have it removed and reinstalled at my expense after that duration, and then have it on my car for another 18 months for the state of Washington. None of this was true, as I found out after multiple calls with the state of Washington, who were very confused by Intoxalock’s extremely terrible advice, and all of this was a scam to get me to pay twice for their service. No one on their team was helpful or courteous at any point. HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE COMPANY. I cannot stress that enough. Even the employees at Car Toys, where I had to take the product to get installed and have regular change outs, told me that they hated dealing with Intoxalock. They told me a story about a customer who drove a hybrid, and because Intoxalock’s product doesn’t work on hybrids (because it is a piece of garbage) the man was told he HAD TO BUY A NEW CAR! Intoxalock was the only option recognized by his state, and so… that’s what he had to do. Buy a new car. This is how terrible these people are.

Just a very bad scene with this co. on several levels. First, my qualifications; I am in a technical field and plenty capable of understanding the parameters under which this equipment operates. Second I live in NYC and don’t park my car where I live as they want more here to park a car than to rent a house in most locals. The Intoxalock installation was not a problem but the company lied to me on every turn about how much current the device draws. First the tech department said «less than 3 milliamps» which is not a lot of current and the battery in the car should be able to power the device for quite a while. Of course such was not the case as I came to check up on the car the battery was flat. So I took matters into my own hands and against all the tech advise measured the current draw which was more like 100 ma continuous and 250ma when analyzing a sample. So I had to rig a solar panel to keep the battery charged. Their advise was to «Just run the car everyday»; not possible in many, many locals. Then the billing problems. They send replacement units for recalibration but how ever fast you send the unit back in the pre-​paid carton it’s never fast enough to avoid some surcharge. The same is true at the end of the monitoring period; the device needs to be removed and sent back immediately or they will bill you for an additional period, but they won’t schedule a removal appointment to make that happen, always a delay which works in their favor. Then the issue of defective equipment. They informed me that the device stopped working, shipped another but I had to spend four hours round trip installing it. Well, of course it did not work so I had to repeat the process. I figure my time alone wasted in this chasing the wild goose was worth well over $ 800. Finally the clock ran out on my monitoring period and I just sent the stupid thing back; hopefully there is some more reputable, competent company to do this sort of monitoring so someone else won’t have to go throughout this torture.

If you need an interlock device to get your driving privileges back do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING in your power to AVOID this company. In the 12 months I was required by the court to have this device it registered three false positives, all at .03 range bac. Each time I immediately had my bac checked with County Court Services to prevent a warrant from being issued and going to jail. Each time Intoxaripoff has charged me a lock out fee plus shipping and a host of other hidden charges even though it was not because of alcohol but faulty equipment that appears to be manufactured sometime in the 1960’s. I also question the possible health issues involved with these units because after blowing you must inhale. If they clean these well as they operate there you are most likely inhaling the last customers breath. I just hope the last guy didnt have TB. I wont even mention customer service because there literally is NONE… its non existent. It’s a shame that CST is accepted by any court or DMV because they will cause you nothing but problems and it they don’t care if they are wrong.
