Clemson Sushi Bar and Shishkebab

Wasn’t impressed. Sushi was average at best and was packed with way too much rice. No lunch menu. Prices were slightly higher than expected and overall service and quality of food was not good enough to make me want to come back. There are three other sushi bars within a mile radius of this one that I visit regularly that are far better.

OMGosh! Huge blobs of rice with no fish… HUGE blobs of rice. Worst sushi I’ve ever had. Staff was nice but stay away. You get what you pay for!
To the woman from Boston who posted that this was the best sushi in town: I hope that the sushi was much better in 2011 or it mush have gotten much worse in Boston because I too am from Boston and this place can’t touch the worst place I’d ever been in Boston.

I totally disagree with the complaints… its really great sushi and i lived in Osaka for a year. Best sushi in town! The vibe is cool, hipster and a touch of Reggae music playing! Always a hit with my family and friends! FRESH, creative, very generous portions and oh so delicious!

We were told that they no longer serve sake (strike one). Ordered a beer and the ‘best by’ date was over 3 months old (strike two)!
The only redeeming thing about the sushi here is that you get a larger than average sized roll. However, the two different rolls that was shared during my visit were pretty disappointing (strike three). The rice was perfectly cooked, but there was SO much in a roll. Guess they were trying to disguise the completely dismal fish that was in there somewhere.
I want to say the sushi was on par with sushi from the supermarket, but I think that might actually be better. Just go elsewhere!

I easily eat here once a week. The lunch special is $ 6.99 for seaweed salad or miso soup and a giant roll. The rolls are great, the portions are huge, and you seriously can’t beat the price. The service can be hit or miss but the food more than makes up for it.

I finally went back during a normal time for their lunch special. i wanted to give them a second chance since showing up at a restaurant 30 minutes before closing usually means the food won’t be fresh and the kitchen won’t be prepped.
Despite coming back at a more reasonable hour, the food was still disappointing. Everything I said before still holds up. Salty, over-​sauced, poor quality fish and rice. Do not go here unless a lack of sushi will cause serious medical problems and you can’t get anywhere better.

I was in town for business last week and was looking for some sushi. I had a late meeting, and was driving back to Clemson so I started calling around looking for someplace that would be open after 10pm. How hard can it be right? College town, late night party area, etc? Well, as it turns out, all the sushi chef’s in town apparently retire early!
I finally connected w/​Clemson Sushi Bar and they said that I could order take out as long as I picked it up by 1015. That worked for me, so I rattled off a typical late night order — nigiri tuna, salmon, tobiko, and a roll (which I asked the person taking my order to recommend — anything with no cream cheese!).
The best thing I can say about Clemson Sushi is that they actually took my order and let me pick it up after closing at 10pm. It goes downhill from there! One of the other reviewers commented on ‘lumps of rice pressed on a plate and topped with a slab of fish’. I COMPLETELY agree! It was unlike any other ‘sushi’ I have had before. Completely weird! They really need to take some lessons on how to make nigiri sushi! The tobiko was sort of this lump of rice that looked like it had been actually ROLLED in the tobiko. There may have been 30 individual little eggs on this huge mound of not very tasty sushi rice. I was very disappointed to say the least! Unfortunately, I didn’t look inside the container prior to leaving or I may have just refused to pay for it. It was pretty sad!
So, I won’t be heading back here anytime soon. I think next time I will just go to Waffle House and order some sushi there. I suspect that their short order cook could do about as well as the guys at Clemson Sushi did.
One last note — in some ways this serves me right. When I ordered, I asked for hamachi, and they guy taking the order asked me to hold on for a second before coming back to tell me that they didn’t have it. I then asked for ikura and the same process (hold on a sec — we don’t have it) ensued. I suddenly realized that he didn’t know what I was asking for. That should have been CLUE #1. When I got there, the guy behind the counter was speaking Arabic to one of the servers. That should have been CLUE #2. I have nothing against middle easterners, my brother in law is Egyptian, but I just don’t associate that culture with a strong background in sushi art!

Best sushi in town and really the best I’ve ever had, even after living in Boston for a few years (not that it was Japan or anything.)
The portions are huge– great for lunch the next day and everything is really fresh and colorful! The staff is really attentive and they also have take out/​pick up too.

I’ve been searching for 2 years for a good sushi bar in the Upstate and finally found it! Every item I’ve tried has been fantastic, and I won’t go anywhere else now.
While prices are normal for all dishes, portion sizes are HUGE so it turns out to be a great value. I would say that most rolls are about twice the size of typical rolls.
Nigiri pieces are HUGE and the salmon quality has been excellent so far. The Angus roll is something very different, and definitely something you should try – marinated (cooked) beef roll tempura fried and served with an aioli sauce – this is one of the rare sushi rolls that was just as good cold the next day as when I had it fresh. Their more traditional rolls like shrimp tempura and philadelphia are just what you’d expect but BIGGER, and quite good.
Their current menu is somewhat limited, but they’re redoing it now, so I can’t wait to see what they come up with. They have quite a few unique rolls already, so the new menu should be even better. We also asked for something not on the menu and they were happy to accommodate, and actually turned out the best shrimp tempura I’ve ever had. There’s a good mix of cooked and uncooked so there’s something for everyone. They do serve beer and wine, and it looks like they’ve got a pretty good selection.
Their service is also very friendly and knowledgeable, and i’s always been clean and comfortable. It’s a casual environment with great music playing and a couple TVs tuned in to sports.
Definitely give this place a try, you won’t be disappointed!
