History

Established in 1997.

Thomas O’Connor was born in Ireland in 1919, a tumultuous year in Irish history. Known as Tom to his family and friends, Grandpa O’Connor was the third of six children. The family lived near Sherriff Street in the heart of old Dublin. Sadly his father died when he was only nine years old. As a result he was compelled to drop out of school at the age of fourteen to take up a trade in order to help support his mother and younger siblings. This was one of his lifelong regrets and sparked his perpetual interest in learning and the support for his children and grandchildren completing their education. Due to dire economic conditions in Ireland during World War II, Tom moved to Birmingham, England to find work. It was in England that he met and married the love of his life, Eileen Carey from County Antrim, Northern Ireland. Together they shared the ups and downs of life for over fifty years and raised four children and had five grandchildren before they passed away a year apart in 2001 and 2
