Business Owner

Originally from South Pasadena, Dr. John Zhang earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry in 2004. He is also a Captain in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. Dr. Zhang is passionate about providing the highest quality dental care in a warm & comfortable environment.

His scope of dental practice includes all aspects of general dentistry and cosmetic dentistry — w/​emphasis on oral surgery, crowns, implant placement & restoration, dentures, & partials.

Dr. Burwell completed his dental education at Northwestern University in Chicago in 1976. After 2 years in Public Health, he returned to CA & opened his practice in 1980. Prior to attending dental school, Dr. Burwell spent 5 years as a Fighter Pilot in the US Navy. Dr. Burwell is celebrating 30 years of excellence in dentistry in the community of Claremont where he was born and raised. He is specialized in Dental Sleep Medicine.

Ok, I’m terrified to go to the dentist — but had to go today and because I’ve been avoiding I knew I was in for some bad news. This is the first time I’ve met Dr. Zhang and I have to say my experience was 100 times better than I was expecting! I ended up having to have a tooth extracted, he was gentle and explained everything and there was practically no pain! His entire staff was super nice and they helped with insurance and costs — nothing about this was intimidating. I would definitely recommend!

I love how Dr. Zhang and his team are always willing to work with me and my schedule! I scheduled an appointment that I was unable to keep due to my work schedule and without any hesitation they agreed to stay open a little later to complete my cleaning — they understood how important it was to me. It’s rare to find a team like this one — one that is considerate and makes you feel comfortable.

Dr Zhang is so amazing. He takes time with his patients, always makes sure they are comfortable, and is very gentle. Is some other DDS offices, the hygenists do all the cleaning and the DDS sweeps in at the end to do a quick glance at your mouth. Not with Dr Zhang. He does his own cleanings meaning he spends time with us. If there was an option for 10 stars I would give them. He is great!!!

I give Dr. Zhang a 5 star rating. My son lost a filling over the holidays, and Dr. Zhang found time to fit him in and get the whole root canal and crown completed while he was home from college. Dr. Zhang is ultimately competent; he’s calm and reassuring as well. The staff is pleasant and welcoming too. We are very lucky to have Dr. Zhang as a dentist in Claremont. Kathy Pezdek

Dr. Zhang and his team are amazing! I came in for a cleaning and the extraction of three wisdom teeth. They were able to make my appointment in a timely manner, and Sheila was extremely helpful in confirming my insurance. I’m usually very nervous when it comes to the dentist, but Dr. Zhang made me feel extremely comfortable. I have a fear of shots, but his technique and bedside etiquette put me at ease. I didn’t experience any pain because he was able to numb me in gradual steps. Mind you, this was my biggest worry– shots! He checked with me throughout the entire process to make sure I was doing well. They even put Netflix on the tv in front of the chair to help me relax! I won’t be putting off visiting the dentist anymore. Thank you Dr. Zhang! You and your team are outstanding. I highly recommend him for any dental work.

I, too, give Dr. Zhang and his staff five stars! He is friendly, courteous, and very knowledgeable. He explains everything before he does it. The staff if very friendly and professional, too. I would highly recommend Dr. Zhang to anyone looking for a dentist.

I love Dr Zhang!!! He’s amazing. I was so fearful of the dentist until I met Dr Zhang. He is a genius at what he does. All the work he has done on me has been nothing compared to all the dental work experience I’ve had in the past. Despite the uncomfortableness of getting dental work, he made the process so easy and pleasant. My extraction was virtually painless. He continuously asked how I was doing. His attentiveness with his patience is something I had not seen before. I even attended a 2 hour meeting at my church an hour later. No pain! I was amazed and in disbelief. He called to check on me later that day which I thought was so awesome and kind of him. I’m so pleased with this Dr, that for once in my life I look forward to my dentist appt. His staff and office is also amazing. Everything very clean. Love him and highly recommend him to anyone looking for a good, honest dentist. I forgot to mention that I’m a cash patient and he worked with and took my income into consideration. And last and most importantly, he serves our country… wow! I love him for this!

I wish I can give 10 stars! My family had such a good dental experience with Dr. Zhang that I have to share it with everyone. My husband had always been afraid of the dentist because of bad childhood dental experience. We found Dr. Zhang and he took good care of my hubby with removal of his wisdom teeth. My hubby came home smiling and his wisdom tooth was just taken out. We went to Dr. Zhang for a second opinion about my 7 years old son’s toothache. It was caused by 4 cavities. Dr. Zhang removed decay portion of the teeth and replaced with filling. Through the whole process, my son didn’t feel any pain or discomfort at all. It’s so important for a child not to be afraid of their dentist or else it’s a long term fear, for example, my husband =). I honestly recommend Dr. Zhang to everyone!

Our entire family sees Dr. Zhang. We have seen him for cleanings, cavities, crowns, and roots canals. He is extremely competent and extremely gentle. Even my children never complain or fear the dentist because he makes their experience pain-​free.
