I came to this salon not as a customer but as a model, for an interview, for a possible job opportunity for a friend at the newest salon in Monrovia. I was there to simply support my friend and offer up my head of hair. My friend had gone to her first interview to speak with the owner and everything went great, she agreed to meet for a second interview where she would do a wash & blowdry, but being new to the hair industry and with not much experience, she did not feel comfortable cutting hair. The owner was looking to take on girls that she could train and my friend was under the impression she would essentially be taking her under her wing and teaching her the basics of hair, from the start. This was made clear in the first interview.
The day of her interview we arrived 15 minutes early, set up for it and got my hair prepped (combed out). The owner arrived 20 minutes late. My natural hair is a level 2 (almost black) and extremely frizzy. I highlight my hair to a dirty blonde which is a lot of upkeep. As you can imagine, highlighting extremely dark hair can be damaging, which I am very aware of, so I know my hair is not in the greatest shape. But I work with it daily to maintain its integrity and trim it very regularly. The owner came over & started running her fingers through my hair and immediately began putting me down. Saying I needed help and much more than a «trim» and there was a lot of saving that needed to happen. To speak your opinion is one thing, but the way she spoke was belittling. I never once mentioned that I happen to be a hairstylist MYSELF and work with clients of every hair texture daily. I know the way to speak to someone respectfully and offer up my opinion without talking down to them. I did not say a word though and let her continue. I told her I did not want my hair cut because. She immediately cut me off and said it did not matter what I wanted because I am only a model. Ok, I let her continue. She told my friend I needed a hair transformation and short shaggy bangs… I started to tell her I don’t like how bangs look with my face shape, yet was cut off again by her demanding «you have breakage you’ll be getting bangs». I didn’t even respond. My friend also informed her that I wear extensions frequently so we did not want to take much length off of my hair so they would still blend with them. She then cut her off and said «we do not care what she does outside of this salon it’s what she needs right now». Now that confused me. From a stylists perspective, don’t you want your client to look good everyday, even after their salon visit? You should absolutely care about what they do with their hair outside of the salon, because that imagine is reflected on the stylist. Again, I kept quiet, and let her finish telling me all the things wrong with my hair and everything that needed to be fixed. We got up to walk over to the shampoo bowls to have my hair washed. To get out of the chair I placed my foot on the wall (because the chair I was seated was broken with no foot rest) she immediately barked at me «Do not put your feet on my wall!!» … Mind you, I am 8 months pregnant. Moving gracefully is not of my nature at the moment and I was simply trying to get myself out of the chair. I have worked in the hair business for over 6 years & work at a very classy salon so I am FULLY aware of proper salon etiquette. I was not trying to dirty/​damage any walls or anything for that matter, just simply lift get up from the chair! To snap at me for that was completely unnecessary.
To make the rest of the long story short we washed my hair, went back to the station and informed the owner that my friend did not even bring her shears because I (the model) did not want her hair cut, and she had made it clear in their first interview that she was not comfortable with cutting hair. She then made a few snarky backhanded comments about not being prepared, and asked if I was trying to get my friend out of a job, all the while rolling her eyes and acting very annoyed. It was then we decided to cut this interview short and leave before it got worse. We packed our things up and my friend went over to the owner in the other room (away from other fellow interviewers) and kindly thanked her for the opportunity.
Every salon is different and ran in their own way, which I completely understand. But I was truly taken aback by this owners demeaning attitude. I was just there as a model, not even a paying client and was offended by how she spoke to me. I know she has many years under her belt in the hair industry, and plenty of knowledge to go along with it, this I have no doubt. I cannot base my review off of her skills but just off of her demeanor, very rude and unprofessional. Education and skills is one this, but attitude is everything. I would of never treated a model, client, nor a potential assistant/​employee the way she did.

I have been going to Rochelle for almost 4 years now. From the beginning I knew she has something special she knew exactly what she was talking about and could clearly explain what I needed and what’s she would be doing. Since being with Rochelle my hair grown significantly and I get tons of compliments all the time. I also have my curl pattern back. I only trust Rochelle with my natural hair.

I came here once and will never return. Going in money wasn’t an issue but they kept changing the price on how much it was going to be for my daughters hair. The entire time I was there I heard the receptionist belittling and yelling at another employee. They had their argument in the salon and then stepped out then continued to argue again in the salon. At one point the receptionist came to me to apologize for for having to hear that. I have managed salons for many years and have never seen such unprofessionalism in a work place. I would have fired her on the spot. I loved how my daughters hair came out and it’s a shame that the receptionist and other employee ruined my efforts in coming here again.

I am so greatfull to have found this little spot. After I lost a lot of my hair due to a significant weight loss and some deficiencies. I resorted to get extension. After that my hair went from being long and thin to brittle damaged thin and short.
I went in was warmly greeted by the lovely ladies and helped by Monique. Monique looked at my hair and explained to be in detail what the plan was.
I was a bit bummed that immidiately she couldn’t do the hair style I wanted but when she explained the reason why it made perfect sense.
We agreed we will take steps to first recover my hair and make it healthy and strong that way we can accomplish the look I want without damaging and loosing more.
I’m extremely happy with my cut and color and glad to say my hair is looking and feeling healthier plus it’s growing out.

They do excellent work here. Monike has worked wonders with my hair in only a few short weeks. She is very knowledgeable on hair care and she is an expert in managing all types of hair. I highly recommend this salon for people like me whose hair cannot withstand any type of chemical treatment. I brought in my friend’s daughter, who is mixed race. She did a beautiful job. I love the california flow hair softening treatments. I have worn braids for years and now I am ready to get my hair back in good condition and wear it natural. Monike is really helping me get my hair back in shape.

My 1^st time here, so far so good. Monique is awesome… she gave me lots of info on how to repair and care for my damaged hair.

The Healthy Hair Bar provides their clients (us), with a professional, clean and pleasant atmosphere. Each of the staff were attentive, engaged and were professional to every customer who was receiving a hair service including myself.
The service was awesome!
My hair felt amazing after Rochelle had shampooed, conditioned, trimmed, flat-​ironed and styled my hair. It felt great to be able to get service immediately upon arrival and get treated like a «queen» from start to finish! Simply a first-​class experience!
Oh and the inventory of hair products and hair pieces are amazing! Lots of variety, and quality pieces and products that are well priced. Be sure to check out their stock of supplies.
All in all… Love, love, love the Healthy Hair Bar!!!

I was happy with the treatment that Rochelle and her assistant did on my hair. I appreciated the time that they took to detangle my locks and the care they took to make me look beautiful. I did not feel like I had been abandoned like at other shops where you have to wait 1 – 2 hours in between each step before they get to your hair because they overbook themselves and then it takes longer. I did not feel like I was just another «head» with a dollar sign on me and I did not feel rushed like they had overbooked or anything which made me feel good. They also checked my car to make sure that I didn’t get a parking ticket.
I do have a lot of hair and I went in there at 7.5 weeks pregnant! They were very gracious and kept me hydrated and even offered to buy me food! The whole process took over the course of 2 days about 4 hours each day, which really tired me out 9.5 hours total. I had to drive 20 – 30 mins to get there. The price that was quoted to me on the phone turned out to be $ 150 too low. That was the one thing that really bothered me. In the end I felt that I had been pampered, my hair looks great and feels a lot healthier and even left a tip, but the price really set me back! I think that I would buy the scalp treatment and oil from Rochelle because I like products without parabens and that are organic. I learned a lot about my hair from her and her assistant as well.
Overall, a good experience, but the $ and the time was a lot more than what I had planned on because of the amount of hair I have and the type of hair I have. One positive note about Rochelle is that she does care about her customers and I overheard that she’s serious about her business and is taking business classes to learn how to make the business better and to expand so that her customers can be more satisfied!

I wasn’t going to leave a review until I read the other bad reviews customers wrote and noticed that I had the same horrible experience. Save your money and go else where.
The healthy hair bar is 45 minutes away from my house and I drove all the way out there because of a service I received three years ago. Ive been in school since the last time I was at the store and honestly I was pretty excited to get my hair done.
When we arrived Rochelles receptionist told us very clearly California flow 50 dollars, glaze 30 dollars and up. Obviously since I drove all the way down to her specific store money wasnt an issue, however AFTER the product was put in my hair, my stylist told me it was going to be more money. At first I thought they must have hired a really incompetent receptionist to make that type of mistake but after reading other peoples complaints saying the same exact thing I know that this must be pretty common.
Before I go on, I have to mention that I wasnt happy at all with the customer service, the stylists were attending to other people, eating, chatting and so on. I’ve literally never seen a stylist eat in front of a customer before. What should have taken an hour and a half took much longer. Regardless because I liked my hair the first time I did it at her place I didnt complain.
What really bothered me was that I came in for a California Flow treatment with another Stylist. While the assistant was washing the treatment out of my hair Rochelle looked at me and suggested that I get a California Flow treatment. Unbelievable. She created the product and didnt even see a difference in my hair after its use.
Afterwards, while the assistant was drying my hair my father came in to pay the amount the assistant told him initially (50 dollars for California flow and 30 + up for glaze.) He was ready to pay any amount for the glaze since he agreed 30 + Up before hand but she did tell him 50 as a solid price. In contrast the Stylist (who barely even tended to my hair) asked for 75 dollars for the california flow. The receptionist admitted she made a mistake but Rochelle demanded we pay the full 75 and not the 50. As my father and Rochelle were talking, Rochelle got fed up and asked me to leave before my hair was done drying. It was extremely rude on her part. Not only was I a returning customer, but I drove 45 minutes to her specific place.
Rochelle should have punished her receptionist for making a mistake not her customer for her receptionists mistake.
I was planning to come to her business for all my future hair needs. Before she rudely asked me to leave I was already thinking of the best date for me to come back for a hair dye but not anymore.
Its so stupid to me that she fought over a 25 dollar mess up her receptionist made and lost a future customer who was willing to spend hundreds of dollars on more treatments in the future. So I wont be wasting my money at her hair salon any more and Ill be calling all my friends to let them know not to go their either.

Best salon experience I’ve ever had. All of the ladies were very friendly, and my hair looks and feels amazing!

I’ve been going back and forth on whether or not to post this review in the weeks since I’ve visited The Healthy Hair Bar because I called and left a message and they returned my call and offered me the option of coming in again free of charge. I was so unhappy with my services that I really never want to step foot in the salon again. Plus, every time I look at my hair I get upset all over again.
I’ve never left a review for anything before, but I was so upset that I made an account. So here it goes: I decided to visit the salon on a whim. My mom saw that they had student specials and I was due for a trim so I decided to call and book an appointment for the next day.
Whitney was my stylist. She brought me over to the bowl and told me that I needed a treatment. I had no issue with it. My hair was dry and it could have used a good deep condition. I was told that this was some sort of revolutionary treatment that was supposed to make my hair softer. It was okay, but the results were no different than a deep conditioning treatment I could do at home. I was told my hair wouldn’t get so dry in the future. I see no change. Whatever. My issue is with the fact that I was initially told it would be $ 45, then $ 60 as she started to apply it. Then $ 75 after the treatment was done and I was put under the dryer because my hair was so thick.
Then my hair was cut. I have natural hair, ranging from tight to medium curls that I take very good care of. I previously paid over $ 200 for a famous stylist to cut my hair curl by curl. I told Whitney that I wanted to keep the same shape, I just needed my ends trimmed all over. Of course she did not listen to me, hence the review. She blew my hair out and cut large sections of my hair straight across to make them «even.» Anyone with even moderately curly hair knows that this is awful. I don’t care about even layers. I wear my hair curly. Every single curl is different from the next, with varying degrees of tightness. She cut about 4 – 5 inches off the top layer, saying that it was fine because it wouldn’t affect the overall length. It does matter. It ruined the shape of my hair. I can barely fit it into a ponytail now. Anyways, she took me over to the bowl to rinse my hair and then combed it out and sat me under the dryer. It looked awful. I’ve never met anyone who claims to know natural hair before who would ever even think of styling my hair this way. She asked me if I wanted her to do more or if I would do something at home. I told her I would do something at home because (1) I had already spent FIVE HOURS there and (2) she obviously didn’t understand my hair. I left with my hood on and cried in the car. Then went home immediately to wash my hair. I cried even harder in the shower.
This nightmare came to a grand total of $ 135. $ 125 for the services and $ 10 for the tip. By the way, Whitney stood at the register and asked me how much I wanted to leave for tip. Apparently, the receptionist didn’t know how to use the register so she had to help her. I came to this salon hoping to save money, I certainly didn’t plan on spending almost as much as I did, especially for the quality I received. Now I’ll just bite the bullet and spend $ 200 on something that looks good. Needless to say, I’ll never be back and would discourage anyone with curls from getting a cut here.

STAY AWAY FROM THE HEALTHY HAIR BAR…
Please stay away from this salon. I’ve never experienced worse customer service. On Thursday January 9^th, I took my 13year old daughter for Kinky twist. The salon owner raved about the hair they were going to use for the install. We arrived at 11:20am and was quoted a completed time of 4:30. Instead we left at 7:30pm. We had a picture for reference of how we would like our hair styled but we were greatly disappointed. By the time we got home, braids were falling on the floor! Imagine the embarrassment. By the weekend 30% of the braids had fallen out. I asked the salon owner ROCHELLE for a refund but she claimed she had a solution and identified the problem. ROCHELLE’s initial excuse was «my daughter has soft hair» and «she required synthetic hair that was coarser.»
I had to spend the following Saturday (today) January 18^th in the salon with my daughter and during the time I wasn’t there my friend had to sit with daughter to rebraid her entire head. We arrived at 9:00am (as requested by the owner) yet the owner didn’t arrive until 9:45 with the hair SHE (the owner, Rochelle) recommended. Mind you we had a photo of reference reflecting what we wanted. Ummm, yea the reference picture and end results were two different things. GUESS WHAT? Upon completion of my daughter second hair visit for braids, once she got in the car 2 braids fell out.
At this point, I’m convinced they lack expertise in kinky twists. I called the owner to ask for refund due to my complete dissatisfaction and the fact that braids were already loose and falling out by the time we left. We went into the shop a 3^rd time to fix the fallen twists! Instead the owner having a professional conversation with the owner — Rochelle, she was yelling explicits and insulting my 14yr old daughter. I never experienced anyone so ghetto and tacky!!! STAY AWAY FROM THE HEALTHY HAIR BAR…
Rochelle refused to offer a solution, nor refund my money in which I paid $ 250. In fact she told me that wasn’t a lot of money, my daughter’s hair is too soft to grip braids, my daughters hair is too damaged for braids and so on and so on. If this was in fact the truth, why would they proceed to install kinky twists the first time we came? After all, according to the owner she has 15yrs of experience, which means she should know better… you would think…
I will be taking my complaint to small claims court.

I had heard about The Healthy Hair Bar on GroupOn. I purchased the package for a hair cut, shampoo, glaze and partial highlights. I scheduled an appointment at 12.30 on a Saturday. I walked in early hoping I would be seen by 12:30. I was greeted by the blonde receptionist, whom was friendly, professional and courteous. She offered me a cup of water and filled out a form on what type of hair problems I was having. After I was done with the form, the receptionist politely let me know that they were not ready for me. It seemed to me either they were short staffed or they didn’t check their agenda when booking my appointment. I wasn’t seen til about 1:10. So disappointed right from the beginning about that. Shauntel initially washed my hair before she did my partial highlights. It over an hour under the hooded hair dryer to finish my highlights but my hair was hard to take to the color and I could tell she made a genuine effort to get may highlights right. I did leave happy with my highlights. My hair was then washed again and then the glaze was applied and I then needed to sit under the hooded hair dryer again. While my hair was under heat, Shauntel then went to style someone else’s hair so she had Rochelle shampoo my hair again and begin blow drying my hair. As she was half way done blow drying my hair, their friends came and they both left to chat. Shauntel ended coming back to finish blow-​drying my hair and then proceeded to straighten my hair and asked if I wanted any bounce. By that time, I was so tired and hungry I just said no. It was already 4:15. I had paid for a cut too and because it seemed like she was already styling I thought she had forgot about the cut and I wasn’t going to remind her because the whole ordeal was just taking so much longer than I had wanted to be out. Shauntel ended up remembering about the cut after she had straightened my hair which I thought was strange since normally I am used to a hair cut before styling but I let her do her thing. I wasn’t too impressed with the cut. And I was ultra disappointed with how long it took. I was FINALLY done at 4:45 It was my first time getting a glaze and highlights so I’m not sure how long its supposed to take but after staying there for half the day it just felt long and exhausting.
Oh, and because I was there on a Group on purchase they tell you your tip has to be at LEAST a certain amount.

These ladies have really done right by me. Since I started going here 6 months ago for cut and color, my hair has totally transformed and I love it!
Reasons I love this place:
They really understand mixed race hair. (Thank god!)
They listen and remember
They don’t just throw the one-​size-​fits-​all treatment at you
They are interested in getting and keeping your hair healthy and looking great EVERY day, not just the day you visit the salon
The are relatively inexpensive (I’d call it $$, not $$$)
They formulate a lot of their own products and make them less toxic than the usual stuff
They don’t try to sell you a bunch of products.
They are very nice about scheduling (my work schedule is extremely unpredictable so I always end up either making or canceling my appts at the last minute)
The scalp treatment is amazing! I got it to clear up my first-​ever case of winter dandruff — which it did, beautifully — but discovered that it was actually allowing my scalp to grow new hair! After a few months, my hair is noticeably thicker. Not expecting that but happy!
Caveats:
You should not expect a pampered-​princess spa experience. The place is homey and clean but not at all interior-​design-​spa-​like. Because it’s small, you’ll see the people who work there taking phone calls, eating, socializing, and basically acting like real humans and not eager servants. Sometimes they are running a few minutes late (oh, so YOU always show up exactly on time for your hair appts? Yeah, didn’t think so.)
I much prefer this kind of authenticity with solid services to those fancy places that fawn all over you to get you to buy into things that are not in your best interest, but I realize that some people go to the salon to escape real life and get pampered. So princesses, go elsewhere (so there’s more room for me).

Don’t go here. This place messed up my hair. First off, I do not like to put alot of heat on my hair. My regular hairdresser puts 270 degrees and is able to get my hair bone straight. I was nervous about going because I know some salons have no bounderies when it comes to heat. I was however, lured by the student special. Before I came in I called and confirmed that I did not want alot of heat and did not want them to surpass 350 degrees. They said that was fine and for me to come in. They began to do my hair and everything was fine until in the middle of straightening my hair I asked what heat they were using. The woman replied «I am on a high setting because you have coarse hair.» (Mind you my hair is 3c/​4a at most nowhere near coarse!) I asked specifically what temperature thinking she wouldn’t say anything past 350. She reluctantly told me 450! Hair burns at 450! I was sooo upset but didn’t thought this one time my hair wouldnt fall out. Boy was I wrong! The entire back portion of my hair which she has straightened broke completely off! My bra strap length hair is completely gone and I had to cut it to my neck. Dont go here. Dont go here this people will mess up your hair!

This place is amazing!
To begin with the location is located at the claremont village, such a beautiful setting arriving, parking may be a bit of a problem, so try to come early! The shop setting is very inviting and intimate. The stylists really know their stuff, I have only been here twice and already see a dramatic difference in my hair. Rochelle and Shantel are extremely friendly, yet professional and are knowledgeable on not only black hair care, but hair care for all different types of textures and races. My mother and I absolutely love this place and plan on returning.

After suffering dry, thinning locks, I decided to take action. I am so glad to know a salon such as The Healthy Hair Bar is in Claremont. My hair is loving the kind attention from this salon team!

Ms. Rochelle, who is a California native, who also studied in Atlanta, is friendly, knowledgable, and committed to healthy hair.
During this consultation, I learned that Rochelle and her team at THHB are passionate about hair treatments that are devoid of harsh chemicals. Their treatments promote the use of natural minerals, oils, and other moisturizing elements that promote a healthy scalp, and strong hair.
Rochelle’s skills at protective hair-​styling are also world-​class.
Rochelle and her team value healthy hair treatments, and healthy hair styling in an effort to encourage beauty regimens that will sustain the life of hair.
Something else to appreciate about this team of beauty professionals is that their own personal approach to beauty and style is natural and positive. That is to say, this salon team is fun to be around because they are positive, and they enjoy what they do.
Their clientele is diverse, and this means that patrons have many options when it comes to hair treatments, and styling, including traditional ethnic hair-​styling practices.
In addition to gentle hair treatments, this salon carries the Arbonne beauty and anti-​aging, line of skin care products and this is in keeping with THHB’s philosophy of healthy beauty.
This salon is an excellent addition to the Claremont Village.

This place sucks, my appt took 4 hours, yes 4 hours, cuz some assistant didn’t show up that day. All I was getting done was a treatment and a haircut. I can understand if you’re shortstaffed and appts are gonna take longer but the stylist had her parents in there! She gave them priority and was gonna have the receptionist style my hair cuz she «had to catch a train» to some concert.
Also the whole time I was there she kept bouncing from person to person helping other stylists’ clients with wigs and other things instead of just working on getting her clients out the door. She also stopped to get a bite from someone who brought in food and was constantly chatting with ppl and what not. Basically there just seemed to be a ton of distractions. The cut was alright and the treatment was whatever, my hair didn’t feel any different. She didn’t even seem to care a whole lot about just how long my appt went over, she apologized, but it seemed like she was just blaming the inconvenience on the absence of the assistant. I didn’t get a sense of urgency and was disappointed in the lack of organization and lack of professionalism. The experience left me pretty pissed off especially since I had to go home and style my hair myself! Never returning, that’s for damn sure. Also, the place is SUPER small.
