History

Established in 1939.

In 1939, Harry and Johanna Benken and their six children, moved from the west side of town to the sleepy community of Silverton. Originally dairy farmers, the property they had just purchased had a small floral shop and greenhouse on it, and with that old photosthey traded in their farm tools for those of the florist trade, and became known as H.J. Benken Florist.

Even though Harry and Johanna had no formal knowledge of running a floral shop, they tackled the task at hand with a passion for excellence that still exists as a family tradition today. Grandma Benken had the daunting task of learning floral arranging. Her first attempt at a basket of flowers for a funeral had to be weighted down with rocks! Grandpa still had a small herd of cattle, but quickly learned the fine art of growing flowers to supply their new shop, which was one of a very few at the time.
