The food here is quite good and very reasonably priced. We especially like the chicken enchiladas verde. Our kids are fussy eaters, but they devoured every bite. What this place lacks in décor, it makes up in taste and freshness.

I haven’t had tacos de borrego as good as the ones they have at El Borrego anywhere else in Chicagoland. The place is humble, and I don’t know how the rest of their food is, but I highly recommend the borrego tacos and consumé!

The best place for barbacoa de Borrego in Chicago, the morita pepper hot sauce it’s unique. Recommended from 1 to 10 I give a 10

We are semi-regulars here for the plain barbacoa and the bar barbacoa in salsa verde. It’s just awesome stuff. Hard to stray to other menu items.

Where to start? First of all, my boyfriend and I had already been there twice and the food was very authentic hidalguense and good, although a bit overpriced for the service. I went there with one of my girlfriends about a month ago. Our server had such an insipid attitude. She started speaking English as she assumed I didn’t speak Spanish, which is fine. I was speaking spanish, which I’m an Italian American, so spanish is my third language. Its not perfect but I can get by pretty well. My Spanish is at least as good her English was. I ordered in Spanish and the waitress looked at me as if I were from Mars. My girlfriend is mexican and speaks perfect Spanish so she stepped in. The waitress from that point forward never spoke to me in English or Spanish, only to my friend. She treated me as if I weren’t even there. For a server this is unacceptable as customer service is her job. It was so obviously rude, my friend was uncomfortable as well. We were there an hour and a half before the restaurant was to close. There was a couple dining as well when we entered and then left. All the other chairs were put up on the tables around us and they had begun cleaning. They were using some strong chemicals which made me nauseous and made my friend upset as we had her 8 month old baby with us. It was literally so strong it gave us both a headache. At that point, we were worried about the baby breathing the chemicals so we left without eating our entrees and paid for our appetizer and drinks. The waitress did not care that we were totally uncomfortable, and we made sure the closing time was right as maybe it had changed since it was posted on the door. The waitress confirmed closing time as almost an hour and a half from that moment so we were flabbergasted that we were surrounded by all the chairs on tables and assaulted with the smell of cleaning supplies. If they weren’t closing, why did they have to ruin our experience? Part of eating is also smelling your food and not feeling rushed to eat, like you’re being kicked out. It would have made sense if one half of the restaurant was closed for cleaning even though its small, but all the tables right next to us they also put up the chairs. Another family came in to eat and they took the chairs down. I was very disappointed as I had eaten here before and the food was pretty good. I had made a special point to bring my friend there since she is Mexican, I thought she would really enjoy it and we had driven 25 miles to get there. Oh well, needless to say, I will never go back as I was very offended by this experience and they made me feel as though we not important at al to them as customers. The other times I had gone with my boyfriend, it was packed and this time it wasn’t so possibly I’m not the only one to feel this way.

What makes El Borrego De Oro special is their three types of salsa that they bring to your table. The food is your standard Taqueria fare. I like the simple steak tacos, tortas, burritos. One of the salsas tastes like it’s chipotle-based and is awesome. The red and green sauces are also good, pretty typical, but the smoky chipotle is the reason I keep coming back here when I’m in Cicero. El Borrego De Oro — good chipotle. Chipotle the chain — bad chipotle.
