Business Owner

Royal Hawkley is CEO of Royal Aire. Previous to this, Royal owned Artic Aire where he spent 38 years serving the homes of the greater Chico area. His HVAC experience is second to none. Royal has lived in Chico all his life, and is very active in the community as a member of Rotary Club and a volunteer at Boy Scouts of America. In addition to spending time with his large family, Royal enjoys golf, fishing and basketball.

My buyers and I chose Royal Aire to inspect the HVAC system for a house we have in escrow. Tom O did the inspection and he did a great job! His inspection was thorough, he explained his findings, wrote a clear report report, and made himself available if the buyers have any further questions. He did not try to sell a new system, rather he talked about recommended maintenance to keep the current system running optimally. I know I can trust anyone at Royal Aire to give excellent service, but I’ll definitely be requesting Tom O again.

If you continue to have a problem and it is not addressed call and talk to Bob the boss. After four service calls and a new thermostat (wasn’t the problem anyway) it was finally diagnosed. Paid for 3 service calls and refused to pay for 4th. Thankfully the original thermostat was under warranty. From being told that our problem was normal to not knowing the «why» of the problem we finally left a message for Bob. He responded quickly on a Friday around 7:30pm and sent out a service person. The correct part was ordered and installed. We have had this problem since the beginning of this year and have had to go through part of this recent hot spell with no air conditioning. Casey installed the new part and was great. He mentioned that when a technician runs into a repeated problem that they usually brain storm with other techs. This did not happen for us. We will request Casey from now on and ask for Kathy at the phone desk because the other person can be snotty. The company is on trial because of the good service of Bob, Casey and Kathy only. Up to this point we had very good service. What happened?

Warning! This company is a rip off! Quoted my 80 year old grandfather 1200 $ to replace the infuser motor an the control bored though that was a little high so I called Bobs air repair. They came out it needed only the motor an a switch. Nothing wrong with the control bored at all bobs got it fixed for Alot less :)

Our furnace went out and I can’t remember the name of who was sent out but we ended up needing a new gas valve. He was polite, friendly, efficient and economical. Would definitely recommend to anyone who may have heating and cooling issues.

STAY AWAY from Royal Aire in Chico! They don’t know what they are doing and they don’t address your customer concerns when you bring them up with them. You will be wasting your time and energy with them.
I am very unhappy and disappointed with Royal Aire’s service.
Last year, our house inspector told us we had an AC issue so I used their service through our home warranty. The inspector who came out didn’t see any issues even though we informed him about the concerns on the inspection report.
Then our buyer ordered another AC inspection report from a different inspector that showed there were in fact additional issues with the AC (Freon leak and low on freon). Since we were not running the AC in the autumn and with no one living in the house at that time, we do not understand how it could be perfect one day and then 6 days later, have some serious freon leak and low freon issues.
So we had our home warranty call them to come back out again to check on the freon issue. This time they found the freon leak and were able to repair it. Since I wasn’t onsite, I asked the inspector to call me back to explain the issue and he never did.
I am very disappointed with the reliability of their service and that their inspector was not able to identify the issue the first time around even though we showed him the other inspection reports indicated concerns with the unit. Also, their erroneous report created a lot of issues for us.
Furthermore, I sent them a note explaining my concerns and they never responded and now they have sent me to collections.
I recommend going to any of the other AC service providers in Chico. Stay away from Royal Aire. They don’t know what they are doing and they don’t address your customer concerns when you bring them up with them.
If I could give zero stars, I would.

Called Royal Aire to look at our HVAC unit on a rental in Chico. They showed up on time on 10/​21/​2015 and were very friendly. The Technicians name was Tom and he was very thorough. He showed me that a rusted out burner was the cause of my problems. It also melted a control module (or whatever it was called) and that is why the unit would not turn on. He replaced the parts for me, cleaned out the leaves from inside the unit, blew out all the dirt and debris from the fins inside it (which were caked with dirt and leaves). He cleaned the filters inside the home. The unit works much more efficiently now. He was 100% strait forward about exactly what it was going to cost to repair my old unit. He also was honest and told me the unit was really on borrowed time. He explained to me how I could get a better unit that would be much more efficient and how my unit was very outdated. So at least that lets me know what I am looking at in the future when it needs to be replaced. Now this is the part that impressed me even more. — I showed him the bathroom, so he could wash his hands. While in there he notice a smell from the sink and that it drained slowly. He asked if I would like him to look at it. In like 2-​minutes, he had the drain cleared and running smoothly. He also fixed the faucet handle because it was really hard to pull. I asked him how much that was going to be and he said, «no charge, that’s just what I do». He saw a problem that was easy for him to fix and just did it free of charge. I was blown away! I can see why they call them Royal Aire, because he treated me like Royalty!!!

My home’s A/​C stopped blowing cold air in the middle of July (of course.) I started calling repair shops the next morning and was being told that scheduling was days to weeks out! When I called Royal Aire and explained my situation the nice lady on the phone was able to fit me in for an afternoon appointment later that same day. The service technician Nick showed-​up right on time and he immediately diagnosed the problem and made the repair. My A/​C was fixed within 10 minutes! Nick even took the time to clean the unit and answer all of my questions. Most importantly, at no time was any attempt made to upsell me an additional part or service.
Overall I paid quite a lot for the necessary part and labor but I can live with it based on the level of service.
I highly recommend Royal Aire as your first call in Chico if you need A/​C repair.

About a week after, Tom stopped by our house to offer an explanation. He said that in his 16 years of experience, when people were in this situation, they preferred a costly replacement of their unit rather than a simple, inexpensive repair. He said that they would not charge for the service call and gave us a company check to cover the cost of the repair.
I received a call from the service manager Bob yesterday and he was on vacation the week that this incident occurred. He stated that after speaking to Tom, he realized that he had not really offered an apology and called personally to apologize for our bad experience. He states that he has, and will continue to train his service technicians to provide honest information about the cost of a repair vs a replacement. I hope that service will be provided with greater integrity in the future.

Called Royal Aire on Thurs., July 2nd 2015 (Friday was the start of the 4th of July holiday weekend) at 4:40pm as the a/​c stopped working at our Chico rental house. For an additional $ 30 they came for an after hours service within 30 minutes and had the unit up and running in another 30 minutes which was terrific as it was 103°. My tenant let them in and I didn’t have to drive to Chico, they updated me by phone, took my credit card info for payment and emailed me a receipt. My tenants didn’t have to suffer over the long weekend and I didn’t have to change my plans either. I highly recommend Royal Aire for hvac repair.

Bump it to three stars, only because the manager cares about how his company is preforming. Everyone is aloud to have a bad day, his employees should keep it at home if this is one of those days. Thankfully the management is on top of their employees and they did the right thing. I would give em another shot.

We had an AC emergency in this heat and our home warranty company was unable to send us a company to do the work so we called Royal Aire. They were there the next evening and the technician Eduardo had it fixed in no time. We had to pay Royal Aire and then wait for reimbursement from the HW company. Eduardo personally spoke with the company promptly and provided them with what they needed to reimburse us. I highly recommend them for any of your heating or AC needs!

Royal Aire is amazing! My husband has MS and cannot be in the heat very long. Our air conditioner went out in 100-​degree weather and Royal Aire came out at 8:30 p.m., only charging $ 30 above the normal service call. I am happy to say we were able to sleep well that night… thank you Royal Aire.

Had some issues with a portable solar system for my rv. Shipped incomplete. These guys got my problem solved courteously and professionally. While I was waiting for my tech (Eric) to show up I got a chance to watch the whole thing operate. These guys and gals are a well oiled machine.

Hands down these guys are the best in the tri counties area. Our Rooftop HVAC unit died @ 11pm on a Monday night. We’d had a positive experience with Gallaghers a few years back and called them first. Please see my review on the Gallaghers Heating and Air Unilocal page to see why they didn’t get our business and never will.
On a recommendation from a coworker, we called Royal last minute and not only were they willing to provide a tentative price quote going off of the info from the quote we had received from the other guys, but they also had someone here after hours on the same day. Jesse is the guy who came out first and crawled up on the roof to provide us with a real quote. He was absolutely professional and accurate. His real quote came in at $ 400 LESS than the rough estimate given via phone which is a rarity.
They had a 2 man crew arrive on time the very next morning, also extremely professional and personable. They explained what they were going to be doing and when the crane would arrive. It was over 100 degrees outside and much hotter on a roof in the direct sunlight and I’m nearly positive they never took a break. They were so efficient, the crane arrived two hours early and they were done and gone 20 minutes before the original crane time. They took the time to demo and explain the new thermostats features, display reads, and programming and told us several times to please call the office if we had any questions at all. Total price = exactly the same as the written quote for the unit, some code upgrade work, new digital thermostat, and two solar attic fans to cut our energy costs at barely over half of the price provided by their competitor for the unit only. Royal Aire has loyal customers in this family.

My 85 year old mother called this company out when her heater failed because their sticker was on the heating unit of her recently purchased mobile. They came out promptly (a plus) and diagnosed a faulty motor and said the repair would be $ 550 plus the $ 65 for the service call. My mom asked me to call back as she did not recall what the service tech said. When I called I asked what the part cost and the tech declined to say — just that the repair was $ 550. I then called a friend who owns an HVAC store in the Sac area and he laughed and said he should move up here if they are getting that much for that repair. He then got me two parts for less than $ 90 and repaired the unit in less than a half hour. The second part he put in was essential to that repiar as had that not been changed, it would have failed in a couple of months, necessitating another repair.
Not a lot of transparency here, I think.

Royal Aire is a great company. We are new in the area and just bought a home. Our heater was in very bad shape and there was Carbon Monoxide in the air making us sick. They helped us out financially by financing a new furnace for us without interest for 2 years. I feel like they saved our lives. I definitely recommend them to everyone.

These guys are awesome! My AC went out on a Saturday evening during a 100+ degree heat wave and they were able to come out first thing Sunday morning. Niel the tech was very professional and changed out my faulty capacitor in a few minutes. I would recommend Royal Aire to anyone!
