Wok This Way

Wife & I decided to try somewhere different & picked «Wok This Way» Chinese Restaurant on 6607 S. Cicero. Well, my opinion is that they should change their name to «Run Far Away!» The first sign for us to have «Run Far Away» was that we where the ONLY people in there. Second sign was that the waiter brought us two tiny glasses of water with Unwrapped straws in his bare hands. Third sign was while taking our order, he told us «The prices on these menus are old & if you want anything with beef in it you gotta add an extra .75 cents to it & add extra for shrimp too!» When we suggested that they should update the menu, he said «These menus cost us $ 60 a piece to make!» OMG! We then told him «There are plenty of Chinese restaurants around but we chose yours & he said «Well why didn’t you go there then!» We politely took his advice and walked towards the EXIT! But wait!!! As we were walking away he said «That’s why you’re driving in a Lexus huh…» And boy oh boy why did he say that. My wife turned and said «Excuse me! But that’s not my Lexus baby… That’s my JAGUAR over there honey!» OUCH!!! He looked in disbelief & kinda softly said «Get out!» LOL. PLEASE People, DO NOT SUPPORT THIS RESTAURANT. THEY DON’T DESERVE OUR HARD EARNED MONEY!

It’s really unfortunate that the rating of this restaurant does not reflect my experience. My family and I have been coming here since its inception and we thoroughly enjoy the food and friendly conversation. And I’m honestly surprised at the reviews here. Especially the amount of ignorance when discussing Chinese cuisine as one review described the soup as some slimy thing (egg drop people) and are too lazy to make a review based on food, not the temperature or service.
These days people have no respect for the hands that make their food and so carry with them a sense of self entitlement. And I’ve first hand witnessed people being rude to the owner. Very embarrassed they receive those types of customers.
The japchae and potstickers are tasty. As is their bbq pork with bokchoy and chow mein. The restaurant is large and can accommodate larger groups and the interior is beautiful. They also have a karaōke lounge that you can book for private parties. We did once, and everyone had fun.

super super rude!!! will never order from here i placed a first time order online from a popular food site to not mention names. and person says we wont put order through cancel and call us directly. i would probably had they not been so rude honestly. thanks wont try ordering from here again.

Never stopped there but drive by several times a week. Watched the place being built. There is a white suv parked in front always and once and a while a second car. My philosophy is to go to resturants/​bars that have filled parking lots, and after reading Unilocal reviews looks like a place to stay away from. aybe all thier business is walk in from the hotels across the street.

Extremely rude and unpleasant. Would recommend staying away from this place. Horrible customer service !

Worst service ever! Place was cold when we walked in. We asked them to increase temperature and they got rude and angry ! We decided to leave and the owner threw garbage at our car !!! I almost called 911 but didn’t want to spoil my day !

My uncle and aunt came here to dine. They said one sentence summed up their dining experience there. WOK THE OTHER WAY! That is all lol

My date and I arrived on a Saturday evening and were greeted with a completely empty restaurant. I thought perhaps the recent change in weather (this being the coldest night so far entering November) had something to do with it, but we were presented with another likely explanation soon enough.
The greeter/​server seemed friendly enough as he lead us to our table, and the restaurant appeared clean and well-​stocked with decorations to keep our visual attention. It went downhill from there, and fast.
We ordered the «dinner for two,» which consisted of a starter of the soup of the day (which was egg drop soup this particular night), two fried wontons, two egg rolls and two fried chicken wings.
I’m not a fan of Chinese soup to begin with, and something as thick, salty and slimy as this was hardly swaying my taste. The wontons were hard and flavorless, the eggrolls were, well, eggrolls (it’s hard to get those wrong, especially if you drizzle sweet-​and-​sour sauce onto it as I do) and two chicken wings which just seemed out of place. It all tasted as though it were either reheated (or re-​deep fried in the case of the wontons). It was an uninspired start.
The main course arrived some time afterward. This consisted of chicken Chop Suey and sweet and sour pork accompanied by pork-​fried rice.
My immediate impression was that we were not getting much in the way of portions to price. It didn’t seem terribly expensive on the menu, but once the plates came out I felt that I was overpaying for a stingy amount of food.
As far as taste, the cup of pork fried rice hardly had pork in it, and it tasted salty and somewhat a stale. The chicken chop Suey was slimy and bland… again, tasting stale and reheated. The sweet and sour pork featured tiny, undernourished pieces of pork encased in a thick suit of bread, all of it hard and lacking in any notable flavor save for the occasional appearance of a pineapple piece.
We were not served water, there was a woman walking about running errands who absolutely never cracked a smile and stared suspiciously and almost contemptuously at us each time as she walked by, and we were somewhat rushed off with the check once the main course was served and we were halfway done with it.
You would think that being literally the only diners in the restaurant during that hour would have prompted some better, more focused service, but we even had to pack our own leftovers at the end of the meal and were never offered desert.
Overall, a very uncomfortable and bland meal experience, certainly not worth the price compared to almost any other Asian restaurant within a five-​mile drive. I first saw this place about two years ago when driving on Cicero and always wanted to try it because of the clever name and its proximity to Midway airport. Now, I’m surprised that they’re still in business.

This place was empty during what should be a busy lunch hour. I came in to eat and get a little work done on my laptop, but I was REFUSED service because «electricity is expensive.» The host walked away from me after a polite inquiry about outlets. I thought it was a joke. I wasn’t free loading, I was coming to eat and figured it’d be a friendly work environment since they advertise free wifi and discounts to the hotel crowd.

So went to eat there and I was charged two times in my credit card, when I called to speak to the manager he stated that someone else had used my credit card I call my credit card company and they informed me that my card had been swiped two time within 5 min so he basically lied and charged my card two times I will NEVER go back to this place Talk about stealing

Very rude. I didnt like the Thai curry. Pot stickers were not the best either. The gentleman helping us, it’s usually rude. Has no sense of what great customer service is.

«Wok this way» I think not! We walked right out, once we were told it’s a $ 5 minimum. So, the coke wasn’t carbonated, and My water was awful. So we decided to try somewhere else, after feeling being rushed to figure out something to eat… Once server/​owner figured that out, he offered a Togo cup to my friend, who was dinning in with me. She said politely no. His response? «Well the only reason I asked, is because if you want to sit and talk, it’s a $ 5 minimum. !! Do not recommend. I can’t comment on the food, but service an atmosphere was so weary, and un-​inviting.

If I had to describe it I’m one word, that word would be «unremarkable». I was staying at a hotel across the street and didn’t feel like TGIFridays. Anyway, it wasn’t really bad, just not good. I wouldn’t go out of my way to eat here. The tea was, uh, weird tasting. Should have got a diet Pepsi. Had beef and onions, which was ok. The egg rolls were most likely frozen and just heated up. It was just a meal I guess. Blah.

Though I was initially excited about this place, I’ve been disappointed by the quality and value in the recent past. Portions were tiny for the price, service was rushed and unfriendly, and food tasted blah — no distinct flavors and even the textures were unpleasant.

This place is a waste of time. For one it is way to expensive and two the service sucks. Please don’t waste your time, nor money in this joint. I rather eat at maxwell street next door.

i used to love this place but now… not so much.
i would rate a 0 but that’s not possible Went in ordered a Japanese bamboo bake with beef, (j14 with beef i think) received a Thai version (Thai is spicy) (labeled T something) both me and my dining partner took 1 bite and tried to exchange it. Owner said you ate half and said we need to pay for it all. Later said he will take half off. So we paid cash omitting the dish, we even calculated tax.
owner was also very rude. for example when we were discussing this with him he just up and left to help another table. he also said he never had such a needy table who calls him over 4 times. well i wanted my refills (they allowed 3) and was asking if they are moving or just selling the building.
my only hope another Chinese restaurant open in its place with a more friendly and accommodating staff with a similarly delicious menu

Went here on Friday night. Don’t understand some of the negativity.
The service was excellent – very friendly. Quick refills and lots of attention.
The food was very good. We got safe items: Mongolian beef and beef fried rice. Not sure why people would order lobster at this place – shame on you.
Anyway, the food was presented nicely and was delicious! I felt like maybe it was slightly pricey, but I’d definitely return. A good addition to the barren southside as far as restaurants go.

A nice little ala carte asian restaurant. Nice décor.
I had Shrimp Pad thai and hot sour soup for lunch. Since the food was cooked to order it was excellent!
Great for business lunch. Not very loud.

A pretty decent Chinese restaurant… but… well…
Underwhelming. I’ve had lunch and dinner here. The lunch was really good. Really, really good. The portions were sizeable, and the food was very fresh and flavorful. I’d come back for lunch, most definitely.
I also came here for dinner, and the experience was less than perfect. The baked rice in a bamboo container was innovatively presented, but tasted more than glorified fried rice with mediocre shrimp. It was fine, it definitely wasn’t bad, but it was only three-​stars worthy. My dining companion had a decent meal, but again– nothing more than three stars. The pan-​fried dumplings were a nice tough, and if I have more experiences like that, I’ll probably take it up a star. The mixed drinks were atrocious. We had a few scorpions, zombies, and something else, but I question whether or not there was even any alcohol in them.
When I asked when their karaōke would be open, the man at the front just smiled and said: «Coming soon». I’m not sure if he even knows.
I’ll come back here. And in time, it might even go up to four stars. Opening the karaōke section would help alot.

My DC ordered the Wok This way delight, chock full of thick, barely cooked bok choy and a hint of the greens. This is standard practice in shitty Chinese restaurants. Here it was advertised as «Chinese greens.» The dish was encapsulated in a clear slimy sauce of what I can only assume is water, corn starch and msg. Advertised as shrimp, chicken, pork and vegetables, this slimy wonder was a combination of old bloated shrimp that tasted like robatusin, and chewy bits of pork. The chicken was somewhat redeeming, but the sauce was reminiscent of an MRE.
I ordered a dish that I have had in many other establishments, ground pork with tofu, chilies and mushrooms. The pork was tiny, the tofu quite abundant, but as far as flavor nothing. The shrooms could have brought something to the party, but were to far and few.
I am willing to bet the only ginger or clove of garlic in this place is to feed the slave labor.
As I write this the Ultra processed additives are raging through my veins, a plasmatic vibrato with a headache chaser.
Why I ask, when Yan Can Cook, or Ming Sai is on the tele the first thing these stars of Asian cuisine do is smash and stir fry some aromatics. By aromatics I mean garlic, ginger, onion, and chilies. When I go to my favorite places, they do it, but something happens when you go South of the river in Chicago, something very very strange. Maybe the Mexicans are taking all the garlic, onions and chilies for themselves. Perhaps they have a pact, Asians get the North side, Mexicans get the South and West. That seems like the only rational explanation.
As far as appearance this place is a wonder. A quick look and the place is dazzling, plenty to see. Actually it is a miracle, how can so much kitsch not assault the senses? It will, just give it time.
I looked around at other dishes, they all had that same hapless look, shiny, abundant, and flavorless.
Parking is an abomination, nuff said.
The windows are mirrored, wait staff are in robes, glittering statues of Chinese icons, a collection of ¹⁄₂₄ scale cars at the entrance, a Karaōke room. I haven’t been so disillusioned by my beloved South side since a four hour nap back in the eighties turned awry.
Fellow Unilocalers, please go to a real Chinese restaurant and eat, do not allow these imposter’s to get away with this ruse. If you are eating a stir fry and see no little bits of sweet garlic, ginger, chive or onion, no herbs, just slimy shiny coatings, then you are being fooled.
