Went to see an exhibit of Art Paul’s work. Nice space.

Free with suggested donation of $ 5 it was my sister’s presence in the Artists Respond to Genocide show that led us to the UIMA and although small the collection proved well culled while the docents each seemed genuinely interested in the work, heritage, and educational aspects of the exhibit. A small standing collection would limit the revisitability of the space, but with shows always changing it could prove a good addition to my list of museums and galleries to browse when visiting Chicago.

I love Chicago for sustaining such a beautiful and thoughtfully curated not-​for-​profit gallery. As others have mentioned, it’s not large, but it contains great pieces in the permanent collection.

Really nice permanent collection, and always something interesting in the current exhibit space. The lady there on Saturdays is super nice and will explain anything you ask about. A really nice space and a fun, interesting thing to do on Chicago Ave.

This small gallery space on Chicago Avenue in the heart of Ukrainian Village (attached to the Ukrainian credit union) displays permanent and visiting exhibitions usually from a mix of Ukrainian immigrant and Ukrainian artists among others. The curator is a serious and fun fellow who you often run into on the streets between the art museum and the other Ukrainian shops and church across the street. Donations are requested.

This is a beautiful gallery and has a wonderful collection. It is well lit, and provides a simple, non-​warehouse backdrop to some very interesting works. I really like that the UIMA is devoted to a permanent collection in one room, and the other room, which has the exact same amount of space, is devoted to more contemporary, limited-​term exhibits.
It was worth the trip just to see the beautiful, classically seventies nature-​inspired print by Arkadia Olenska-​Petryshyn. The UIMA has a great print collection in general, and a necessary addition to any artist’s or collector’s understanding of European modern art.

I attended a free tour of the newly installed permanent collection led by the Curator of Collections, Stanislav Grezdo, who gave us a good history of the art pieces and artists exhibited.
Although the gallery was just a single room exhibiting mostly paintings, I was pleasantly surprised when the curator opened the doors to the storage area to let us see the works that were not on display. There were a few kinetic sculptures, some 3-​dimensional Op Art pieces, and several wonderful paintings. The curator gladly answered all our questions and moved items around to show us what we wanted to see.
If you’re in the neighborhood, stop in for a quick look. You’ll most certainly be greeted warmly and if you’re like me, you may find a piece or two that fascinates you.
It’s about a 15-​minute walk from the Western Avenue stop on the Metra Milwaukee District /​West Line (Elgin /​Big Timber). From the Western Avenue station, go one block east on Hubbard Street, six blocks north to Chicago Avenue, then one block east to the UIMA.
