History

Established in 2006.

The Thrive Integrative Medical Spa was founded on providing the highest standards of care by highly qualified board certified physicians, and medical professionals. The center offers a comprehensive array of medical, wellness, and minimally — invasive aesthetic services to its clientele.

The center offers a total patient /​person management program, whereby the patient can experience a full complement of services to facilitate a happier, healthier life. The clinic has a singular goal; Our clients will feel, look and live healthier. To this goal we take an approach of balance and synergy, treating the whole person.

The relationship between the professionals at the center facilitates an atmosphere that, through each individual specialty, brings together all in the group to treat the client in an entirety.

Dr. Barry S.

Business Owner

Dr. Barry Summers, M.D., Ph. D, F.A.C.S., graduated with Honors from Drake University with a Bachelor’s in Biology. He spent two years in post-​graduate work involved with the subject of circulatory physiology.

Dr. Summers then entered a six-​year M.D./Ph.D. program at The Chicago Medical School. He received a full tuition scholarship through medical school and graduated with his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees. His Ph.D. thesis involved cardiovascular physiology. He then went on to complete a General Surgery Residency at The University of Chicago Hospitals and Mount Sinai Medical Center. After residency, he pursued a private practice, which consists of general surgery and phlebology.

Dr. Summers is board-​certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

I love thrive spa. I started going there last year for my chemicals peels. I really liked the results and came back a few weeks ago for the exilis treatment which is great. This place is nice and everyone is very friendly. I will be going back for more treatments.

I have gone to thrive for about 2 years now and have had an awesome experience! Such a welcoming environment. Services are on of the best I have been to! Results are practically immediate. I recommend the chemical peel and microderm for acne treatment. Great place!

It’s hard to find a spa, let alone a medspa, that has so many positive reviews so that’s what brought me to thrive. I soon found that posted in the spa is a sign for free/​discounted services for Unilocal reviews. So, there’s that.
I stopped going here because they offered a Botox party and I preordered a few. The day of the event they called me 10 minutes before I was supposed to leave to tell me they didn’t have enough and forgot to order mine.
Botox «party» insinuates there will be plenty, lots, and usually even more than necessary, in case you want more.
Really unprofessional.
They lost a customer because of this.

I have been going to Thrive for 5 months now for cellulite and fat reduction services. I have been extremely happy with it. The technicians and staff, particularly Justina and Nataliya, are extremely friendly and have made me feel comfortable and welcome during my appointments. Also, they run special promotions on my services every month, which has allowed me to save a lot of money on otherwise extremely expensive treatments. The treatments themselves are non-​invasive and have produced lasting results. I highly recommend Thrive for cellulite and fat reduction treatments.

I have been going to Thrive for over six months now. I can see a tremendous change in my skin’s texture, appearance and health. I love the microderm facial, laser genesis, isolace and laser hair treatments. Christina is the best too! I would strongly recommend if your skin needs rejuvenation!

I’m writing about the Gold Coast Thrive location. If I could give it zero stars, I would! I made the mistake of buying a package of microderm/​facials during my birthday month when there was a discount. I did so somewhat for the price but mostly because the individual giving the service was excellent. This location has since had a tremendous amount of turnover. No one there seems to understand the meaning of customer service. The girls that answer the phone are rude and do not follow through. I’ve been trying for months to get another jar of a product I’d purchased there with no success. Products are always out of stock, and don’t bother to take them up on their offer to call you when a product comes in becuase they never do. This could be a nice facility but they need a complete overhaul in management and some serious customer service training.

Thrive (the Halsted location) gets one star only because giving zero stars isn’t an option. They allow you to make an appointment on line, which is great, and even follow up wtih a phone call to confirm — also great. However, they allow you to make appointments on line for services they can’t perform without some preauthorization. So when you get there, after you’ve arranged your day around the appointment, you can’t have the service you made the appointment for. Further, on the day I visited, they wanted to charge me for a full package of services anyway — even though I would have to come back at some future date to have those services performed. The website appointment form and the receptionist follow up call were tremendous (MISSED) opportunities to communicate the quirks of their appointment setting practices and set patient expectations. Bottom line: Complete waste of time.

I’ve been going to Thrive for chemical peels for 3 ½ years. I currently see Hillary for Ultra Peels seasonally… or whenever I can afford it. Hillary is fun and personable, and I get great results. I have crazy, acne prone, unpredictably sensitive skin, and she handles it well. Check the website for their special offers, and schedule an appointment — you won’t be disappointed!

I went to Thrive for laser hair removal treatments. To be fair, I’ve waited until the full series of treatments were complete to give a review of the experience (hoping it would improve). It started off on the wrong foot when I was not allowed to take advantage of the monthly promotion they were running at the time I signed up. After unsuccessfully arguing with the manager, Jessica, I finally gave up and continued the treatments I had already paid for. I never had an opportunity to meet or consult with the doctor on staff (in fact, I never once saw him in the office). The first session burned/​welted my skin so bad I had to see a dermatologist. After reporting this back to Thrive, they changed the laser settings. Over the course of treatment, I had 3 different estheticians/​electrologists due to the high staff turnover rate. I was told that the second esthetician (Lloyd) was let go because he was not licensed in IL! This was after he performed two treatments on me! I actually liked my 3rd electrologist (and she quit the week of my last treatment). I had to complete two extra sessions to get to reasonable level of hair reduction, and even now I still have to shave regularly. Initially I was told that I was an ideal candidate due to having dark hair and fair skin, but the results are disappointing. They do not take «before» photos so arguing over whether the level of reduction meets the guarantee is pointless without a point of reference. I sincerely wish that I had done more research before selecting Thrive for laser hair removal and would never under any circumstances recommend them. Unfortunately after wasting a good amount of money, I am now seeking a better spa to redo the treatments.
As a side note, the evening receptionist is snobby and condescending.

I purchased a You Swoop offer for Thrive and went in for my first visit. When I made my appt, the rep was very nice and when I asked about the free parking stated on their website, she said all I had to do was call and someone will bring down a key. The rep said I would be given instructions on my first consult visit also. On the day of my consult appt, I called, the receptionist brought down the key, I parked. Let’s just say that if she is annoyed by bringing down a key, maybe free parking shouldnt be a service provided? I met with the doctor for 10 minutes; he was very nice and professional. He also stated the girls out front will give me prep info. When I asked the receptionist any prep that I need before my first week, she looked further annoyed and said, what instructions… I said shaving before treatment? no deordorant… Let’s just say she didn’t have time for me.
For a business to cosmetic business to ‘thrive’, I would expect a little bit more professionalism and courtesy to clients from the staff. I haven’t had my first laser treatment yet, but based on the reception received, I would prefer to pay regular price for a place that respects clients rather than be treated as an inconvenience.
To the girl with the long brown corkscrews, if you don’t enjoy your job, find a new career that doesn’t deal with people?

Thrive is one of the best and is definitely great at customer service! I first heard about Thrive through Youswoop. Initially I had difficulty making an appointment (both on the phone and online). I figured they were bombarded with phone calls from the Youswoop deal. However, I left a few voice messages and they ALWAYS called me back. I really liked how they kept calling me back to make sure I was not forgotten. They were able to fit me in quickly and within the times I wanted. Very convenient.
In order to get the service I needed, I was required to speak to one of the doctors there and fill out some paperwork. However, when I arrived for my appointment, the doctor had an emergency and was unable to meet me. As a courtesy, the receptionist advised me that Thrive wanted to offer me a free service as an apology for the doctor not being able to make it. I was IMPRESSED! Excellent customer service!
My second appointment was wonderful. I was greeted by Hillary who I thought did an OUTSTANDING job. She explained everything very clearly to me and answered any questions I had. She was so knowledgeable in what she was doing. I knew I was in good hands. The room was very bright and clean and comfortable. I’m looking forward to my next visits to come!

Well, I had 2 chemical peels from Thrive (Jessica) and they were pretty good… BUT, I also had 1 session of laser hair removal from another girl and apparently the settings were too high, because I was left with 3 dark spots on my skin. Needless to say, I have not and will not go back for the laser removal; although, the chemical peels were ok.

I went into Thrive for laser hair removal which is an embarrassing situaiton to begin with. The consultation went fine and I was told that I would be an ideal candidate due to having very dark hair and olive skin. I paid for a package to have two areas of hair removed. After the first 3 treatments I didn’t noticed any difference except that I was getting more hair in those areas?!? I then was told that they had the laser at too «light» of a setting. After about the 5th or 6th treatment I finally started to notice a change; however, I only had one more treatment paid for. There was absolutely no apology for their error and they even admitted that the majority of my hair would have been removed if they had the laser on the right setting. They basically just had me initial a legal form and sent me right on my way. I’m now going to have to come up with another $ 1800 to get my hair removed from another place.
The only good thing is that the receptionist Sarah is great and super friendly. The rest of their staff — not so much.

A newbie to the Med Spa scene, I was a little nervous during my complimentary appointment. However, the friendly staff at Thrive were amazingly attentive and made me feel at home right away. The pluses — they have parking, which is great for a Gold Coast location, they offer great specials, the staff is very friendly and is always on time, and the treatments are very professional. They answered all of my questions and took as much time with me as necessary to make me feel comfortable.
After my first peel, my friends told me that my skin glowed… what else can a girl ask for?

LOVE Thrive! The staff is really friendly, thoroughly answers all questions and makes sure that you’re 100% satisfied. I was getting glycolic peels, which didn’t seem to be reacting well with my complexion. Lloyd suggested that we try the salicylic peel… Amazing! If you’re in need of some rejuvenation– absolutely go to Thrive!

I finally had a chance to visit this new Thrive Medspa location. I usually am a fan of the Halsted location and visit often but decided to visit Michelle at the Gold Coast location for a Photo-​rejuvenation facial.
I was greeted by the lovely Sarah when I arrived. I was a bit early so we got to chat a bit. One thing I notice about each location is when you arrive they treat you like they have known you for years. The staff is always friendly, always service oriented very professional and their style is one that actually makes you want to go home and call your girlfriends to tell them about the great service you got there.
Michelle took the time to really hear my concerns and answer all my questions. I am trying to do a little reverse aging right now Benjamin Button style lol. All those years on the beach rubbing iodine and babyoil on my skin for the perfect tan probably wasn’t the best thing… it has started to catch up with me. Thrive is helping me erase any signs of my former careless ways!
Michelle really concentrated on the areas I wanted and paced me through the procedure by letting me know what she was about to do next.
Again, I had a perfect Thrive Medspa experience, I love this place!

I typically go to the one in Lakevview however with this new location i will start coming here more often. It is in such a convenient location and if I drive I can typically find parking with in a block at a meter. Everything is new and not run down like a lot of other locations. The intimate feeling of their space is welcoming as is their staff. The service is great and they are always willing to answer questions and are very patient which I appreciate as I tend to ask a lot of questions. They have a ton of different services and a lot of new interesting ones that many other salons don’t carry. I will continue going to both their locations. I give 2 thumbs up.

So I normally don’t write reviews but I was so impressed with Thrive that I wanted to. I had laser hair removal and Michelle preformed it. I had a lot of questions about how the laser works and how safe it is. Michelle took the time to answer all my questions and explain how the laser works so that I knew it was safe. The treatment was not as bad as I thought it would be. Also, the Spa has a relaxing medical feel, so I felt relaxed and comfortable. I have since then purchased a package for bikini and under arm hair removal. Their prices are competitive, but it is a better value because the location is convenient, they have garage parking and the staff is very educated. I have recommend a few of my friends to go here.

In comparison to the first Thrive location on Halsted, this location was less enjoyable. The rooms are really small and too bright for facials (when you just want to close your eyes and relax) because the hallway lights shine into the room through the long frosted glass windows. They need drapes, for real.
Once you’re a «customer» and give them your email address, they’ll send you deals via email, like $ 50 off microdermabrasions. Regular price is $ 115, I think, and facials are $ 65.
