Have you ever thought that you knew what you were getting into to find out that you literally have no clue? Have you ever woken up the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day in the fine city of Chicago and thought, «what a great day for a parade» ? At 6 p.m. the same day: Have you ever had a salty Irishman wearing a kilt take of his underwear, mash said underwear onto the beer soaked floor and then whip it at your head? Well, if you haven’t, may I be the first to say,” Welcome to St. Patrick’s Day in Chicago!“ Now onto the parade review. I have marched several years in the parade and attended many more years, it is a great, well organized event that is steeped in tradition and pageantry. If you have the opportunity go, it is family friendly and doesn’t take itself too seriously. Make sure and check out the green river on the way there or back. If you do have children in tow, plan your exit strategy well, it can be quite a zoo. Several hotels in the area have family friendly events surrounding the festivities. They can be great to warm up, relax and throw back a pint in a more civilized revelry. If you are heading out childless, the options are endless. Expect long lines and cover fees as well as seriously drunken people in green. Be careful, be wise and plan for the unexpected. Here’s to underwear in your eye! Cheers!

Such a great parade. It went on for almost 3 hours! Lots of local entrants(radio stations, union workers) but also many high school bands from outside of Chicago, Irish dancers, and bands. Lots of people but doesn’t feel very crowded. The dyeing of the river is also a sight not to miss.

I watched the river being dyed green for the first time this year in person. It’s just like it is on TV. But, I was watching with some great friends and some early morning cocktails, so I had a good time. The parade is always fun! I love how happy and joyous the crowd is. Everyone is your friend and everyone is Irish when at the parade. I love that feeling of being surrounded by a crowd of people who are having a great time and being nice to each other. :)
