Shriners Hospitals for Children – Chicago

This review is for Dr. Pravin Patel, who I was referred to by Dr. Ron Jacobson, my orthodontist at the time, who urged me that surgery was the only way to correct my bite. My family did not want me to go through with surgery and I did not need it, but somehow we were convinced that it would perfect my bite and align my face. He suggested both upper and lower jaw surgery to Dr. Patel. After a series of appointments I was to have the surgery over the summer in 2009. I got my braces off In November of 2009. Now I regret the operation so much. One of the screws put in to my lower jaw is poking at he root at one of my molars which caused it to die and has been dead since 2010. It turned black and I am dreading getting the root canal. Also, I have no sensation on my lower lip. I have a bunch of wrinkles on my chin. My teeth bite has shifted since. And I have an open bite. If Dr Jacobson hadn’t so easily pushed and offered this operation I would have never gotten it. My nose moves when I speak and I can’t even close my mouth properly. My jawline is non-​existent (they broke it for the operation). I have spoken to other dentists and orthodontists who told me after that I did not even need the operation and they could have used a device to bring the chin and jaw forward for the teeth to align. Now I am considering getting jaw implants but that would cost about $ 14,000 per Dr. Eppley in Indiana. I solely showed him these same images and he told me I would also need a sliding genioplasty for my chin because it is too long. Dr. Patel at Schriner’s hospitals who did my operation brought my upper jaw so low that I have such a gummy smile and my teeth are always showing, even when my lips are relaxed (which Is always because I struggle to keep my mouth closed). I am too embarassed to post a picture of my teeth, but I may just have to. I had moved to California after my operation and was flying in every month for the first year after the surgery for follow-​up visits. (Keep in mind that they claim they are backed-​up and your lucky to even be given a spot, so whatever time that is in that letter is the only time you can get an appointment.) The last appointment was scheduled on my first day of college, which I’m sorry but I could not miss. They said that they couldn’t change the appointment and if I did not go they would drop me from their system, which is what happened. I never was able to see Dr. Patel again. I wish he could see my face now to realize what a horrible job he has done. Beware, make sure to always get second opinions on whatever he suggests. Now I have to pay all this money to try to un-​do the damage he has caused me. Several people told me I should take him to court. Everyone at this hospital treats you as if they’re doing you a favor and that you are fortunate to be able to have an operation with them. True if your child has a disability or birth defect I suppose that is a medical necessity. I would give anything to go back in time and avoid this whole thing. And not even a call or email from my surgeon in the past 6 years.

I’ve been going to Shriners ever since I was diagnosed with mild Cerebral Palsy, Dr. Ackman was my doctor and I can say I am so fortunate to have been a patient at Shriners. When I was 7 or 8 I had a surgery called a tendon transfer and Achilles heel release. It was a ⁵⁰⁄₅₀ shot that I would ever walk again. I am now 18 years old and I am happy to say that people actually think I’m lying when I say I have a disability,.

The people here are fantastic. They care so very much about the children. My son has had a number of surgeries here. They have always been so very kind. Outstanding people all away from the front of the building to the back.

This is my daughter’s home away from home. She has been coming here since she was 2 for treatment for scoliosis. These doctors really know what they are doing. We started off with casting and ore recently she has had a partial fusion and growing rods placed. Shriner’s doctors make sure that you are aware and confident with any and all decisions and options available to you before they do anything at all. You are comfortable with every choice every step of the way.
I could not ask for a better place to trust my child’s health with. I know she is in good hands everytime she comes here. It’s very hard to find a place that puts the patient first these days. Shriner’s does!
On top of all of that they go out of their way to make sure the child enjoys their stay. They bring them toys and activities to keep their mind off of surgery. They bring home made blankets to the kids so they feel ore like home during their visit. We’ve been in there for months before, and my daughter cries when we tell her it’s time to go home. If you ever find yourself in need of this place I highly recommend coming here!

Shriners Hospital claims they will conduct child seat safety inspections. I’m not sure if this is a misprint, but after multiple calls, nobody would even call me back.
In my opinion, this doesn’t shout, «WE LOVE CHILDREN!!!»
