History

Established in 1991.

Arriving in Chicago from Boston in October of 1977, my assignment, as an apprentice property manager, was to assist in bringing online about 2.4 million square feet of vacant industrial space which was located in several single user manufacturing facilities that Shetland had acquired. Coming from New England, I was instantly awe struck by the intensity and immensity of Chicago’s industrial activity. The never ending lines of flatbeds laden with steel coils that endlessly streamed Chicago’s expressways fed a ravenous, and seemingly never ending, three shift industrial appetite. Aside from the relentless velocity of production, the overall low tech nature of the economy offered far easier access for the average entrepreneur. This wide open access promoted an almost entrepreneurial giddiness that at times felt almost joyfully carnival-​like. Though a steady migration of manufacturers had been under way for some time, «making stuff» was still a primary component in Chicago’s «can do» DNA.
