Sacco Bruno

Tried to pick up lunch here yesterday… they were closed and the interior looked like it was midway through dismantlement. Their phone recording indicates they lost their lease on ¹⁰⁄₃₁. Too bad, because Sacco Bruno was a nice place to have in the neighborhood.

My Italian grinder was really good, but it took about 15 minutes to get it even though the place was empty. The meal was pricey for the size of the sandwich. The grocery shelves were empty and they had a can of paint sitting in the middle of the floor, I would have thought it was closed if I hadn’t seen a guest at one of the tables. The girl at the register wasn’t too friendly but the guy making my sandwich was really nice. When u open any new restaurant in Chicago you should be making sure that anyone who walks through the front door gets great service! It may be the last time u go in. Also I noticed the owner berating people via Unilocal.U should think about nicely taking criticism. Theses people are just first time guests with opinions

i actually liked this place a lot, although bits and pieces of it were weird.
–it looks like a restaurant (you order at the counter and then find a seat)
–but it feels like a coffee shop (free WIFI)
–yet it seemed bar-​like (big screen TVs, high-​top tables, bumpin’ old skool hip hop)
–but they say it’s a grocery store.
so like, all that in one.
i ordered the prosciutto sandwich — i really enjoyed that. the meat was cut SO thin, and i haven’t had it like that thin in a really long time (that’s what she said). i thought it was delicious. it came with a bag-​o-​chips. i also got some sort of european hazelnutty dessert, like a candy bar, kit kat, type thang, and them shits were awesome. overall it was about $ 13. a bit pricey, but i felt the ingredients were quality.
i was really the only one in there but it was still loud. i would definitely come back for that sandwich, but maybe not the atmosphere, unless i’m hankerin’ for a restaurant/​bar/​coffee shop all-​in-​one.

been here twice, had the same roast beef sandwich twice. decent selection of beers, it’s pretty small and cozy in the little bar area in back, but they’ll make your sandwich however ya want. my friend got a huge plate of an array of cheeses, and there was this one horseradishy tasting one that was unbelievable. friendly stafff, a nice little bar area and a big friggen TV in back. if you are looking for a local tiny hidden gem to slip into for a sandwich and a beer, this is your local spot.

Blue Cheese pizza with bacon and apples. Yes. This tasted better and better with every bite. I don’t know if they often have pizzas that are as interesting as this but I am glad I came on a day when they did. The six inch Italian sub was good… pretty typical. After I left I kept thinking if one slice of pizza, one 6 inch sub and two drinks were worth the $ 17 we paid. Maybe? I don’t know. But I know for about $ 4 Bari will make you 9 inches of heaven and that the Italian sub at Bari, not the one at Sacco Bruno, is the one I’m craving now.

I thought to return after reading the owner’s comments. I am jaded but not stupid. I think that the sale of bottled wines should be explained. perhaps a sign at the bar. If they are selling it legally in this manner (I have yet to hear if this anywhere else) then they should post notice. I would have certainly considered a purchase if it had been advertised. Still a wine store offers better selection and price.
My 2-​star review was also based upon the expensive groceries and lackluster deli items I bought.
I found the subs to be better quality than the pizza slice I had in May. Average for the neighborhood IMO. The market has usual items. a Mariano’s or Whole Foods has specialty and fairly priced items … this market is more like a convenience store. So it gets a 3-​star.

It took me several trips before I felt I could get a full feel for Sacco Bruno. Oddly enough, my feelings are still pretty much the same, it’s a nice and solid place to hit up.
The sandwiches are what they do best here. There is a good selection to choose from and you generally get a decent amount of meat in it. The prices are generally what one would expect for what you are getting and I’ve really enjoyed the turkster the most. Their italian sub is pretty good, but it would be nice if there was a bit better of a meat/​bread ratio.
The pasta salads can be a little hit and miss along with the grocery section as well. I know Sacco Bruno is more for its deli and sandwiches, so I don’t really hold it to a grocery level. Still, it’s offered and I’ve sampled some of their wares and it’s okay.
I like sacco bruno and is a nice place to stop in on when in the area. I wouldn’t go out of my way for it. It’s very solid overall and a nice neighborhood stop

Came in here tonight to watch the Bulls game because Jack & Gingers and Floyds were packed. What a good call!
The place is spacious, and has a wide variety of beers available. They’re a little pricey, but the selection is very good. The food is definitely deli-​style; I went with the ribeye Italian Beef with provolone and hot peppers, which was a pretty solid sandwich. The main reason that I’m reserving such a high review for this place is the customer service. The dude running the place basically gave us a whole pizza for free, and let us stay for around an hour and a half after closing to finish watching the Bulls. That level of service deserves the maddest of props.

I’ve been back a few times and seems like they’ve gotten rid of the hipster dudes behind the counter, which is a good thing.
The food is fairly solid, if not a little bland and I really wish they’d expand they’re grocery options. Maybe tone down on the giardinara and add more real food (see Bari Foods or Oliva’s)

I stopped in here while waiting to pick up my dog from the grooming spot across the street. It sure looked like a nice addition to the neighborhood. The interior was clean and cozy, and i liked the concept of selling a few grocery items along with being able to eat or have a drink at their little bar. But when i ordered the food i was pretty dissapointed.
Their pizza slices are small, expensive, and unimpressive. Maybe i’m still reeling from the Dante’s Pizza goodness i had a few weeks ago, but this tiny square of pepperoni pizza that cost $ 3.25 really left me confused. First, there wasn’t a lot of flavor to the slice. Second, the crust was really greasy. Third, this pizza tasted like it came out of a microwave. I WON“T be eating pizza here again.
I also ordered the Italian Beef sandwich. Unlike other reviewers comments of there not being enough meat on the sandwich, i found it to be rather robust. But again, the sandwich itself lacked flavor. Something was just missing. I enjoyed the sandwich more than the pizza, but its like they left off some ingredients or spices or something.
I might go back to try another sandwich, but i think they need some fine tuning. They certainly don’t deserve 4 or 5 stars yet.

We were so glad that something of substance opened up in the neighborhood and practically across the street on top of it. The grinder meatball sub is delicious along with the two different salads that we’ve tried, the caprese salad and southwest chicken caesar salad. The staff is always friendly and I love the ambience of the bar in the back. We’ve also gotten the take and bake meals like the mac and cheese and spinach lasagna for those easy dinner nights.
Give Sacco Bruno a try and you won’t be disappointed.

So a week or two ago, a Unilocal bird landed on my shoulder and said the old women who seemed to take so much delight in being so deliberately and robustly rude had sought other employment clubbing baby seals in Alaska. The bird chirped that I ought to really give these paisans at Sacco another chance. I wrote back, and said sure just to be nice, even though I was thinking to myself, I’ll go back there when pigs fly whilst singing opera wearing librarian glasses. So last Thursday I’m back from school again my bag full of lawyering books and contracts II still clutched in my hand propped open with a yellow highlighter ready to study even on the Armitage bus. But any one who has to ride this bus knows that Armitage Bus absconded with the R from the world reliability along time ago. So there I am hungry only a mere few blocks from Sacco Bruno thinking about that Italian sub sandwich, so I peak into the window and didn’t see the old women and walked in. The young supper polite women was there along with another crew who were friendly and helpful. Happy to be back in Chicago and on my way home, while I waited for my order I looked around at the produce for sale, which included grade A pastas, peppers, olive oil, spaghetti sauce (for those of you too lazy to make your own) at a reasonable price. And don’t forget the cozy full stocked bar in the back. How old school is that? And I need to correction something. Last time I was so pissed at «Alyona Ivanovna» that I mistakenly stated the price of the sandwich at fourteen dollars. Actually the sandwich was only seven dollars with tax included, which is very reasonable for the amazingly fresh bread and ingredients used. Now, when you take into account that this sandwich is a whole sub (they do sale halves), the deal is even more reasonable.
The only thing wrong with this establishment is that it’s not located in Logan Square where this fine establishment would be more appreciated and much more needed then Bucktown.
p.s the name «Alyona Ivanovna» from a character of one of my all time favorite novels wasn’t used to advocate violence against any living being, especially women. I just used it to be literally cheeky and honor the great Fyodor Dostoevsky

I had been wanting to try Sacco Bruno for a while after driving by it all the time. When I walked in, I guess I just thought there would be more choices, more food in the case, more of everything! Such a big space, fill it up! haha. Anyway, I had the meatball sub. It was good, nothing spectacular. I definitely want to try the pizza some time, but I don’t know that it is worth walking all the way there when I live right by Santullos. I wish there were more salads and pastas in the case and more sammys on the menu! I would try it again, but I need a little more for me to make the extra trip over there.

Great spot, hopefully something can survive in this corner location.
Part neighborhood market, part Italian deli, part relaxing bar…
Stopped in for a sandwich with a friend. We were surprised by the quality of ingredients: fresh roasted turkey (i.e. NOT processed), spicy Italian provolone and really fresh french rolls.
You can order up front and takeout, eat at the deli tables in front, or hang out in back and have a beer or glass of wine. Some TVs for catching up on sports if you want to relax.
I enjoyed the Turkey Provolone, great with the added giardiniera. My friend has tried a few things and enjoyed them all.
Give them a shot, most places need to work out some kinks and I hope others will sup

Been here twice. First sandwich, the American, was not good. Coming from an Italian deli (assume it’s an Italian deli by the name, Sacco Bruno) I was surprised how little flavor it had. Very plain. The Turano bread carried the otherwise sub par cold cuts. The mayo, oil and vinegar were not evenly spread. Some bites mayo squirted everywhere, others were dry.
Second time I visited I made my own. Pepperoni, I decided to get the sandwich toasted, bad idea. The bread seemed different, not as good. That could just be my imagination, but something was off. Again, very inconsistent with the toppings. There was very little meat, not loaded up. And even though it was pepperoni, a very flavorful meat typically, the sandwich lacked flavor.
It’s a sandwich shop and the sandwiches aren’t good. They have other things going on, but really, it’s an Italian Deli. The hard work this place has done is very evident, but they need to concentrate on the food to be a success. I hope they go to Bari, L’Appetito, Fontano’s, Lucia’s and some of the other classics around town. Get the cold cuts they use. Follow the formula they use. And hire sandwich makers who know how to make a sandwich.
The staff was very nice.

I live right by Sacco Bruno and joke about having to get a «sack of bruno» on the way home but waited to go until it seemed like they were settled in as far as hours and menu.
I got a sandwich, pizza and some cookies and thought they were all good.
The basil and tomatoes on the pizza were extra good. The staff were nice. I didn’t look at the groceries so I can’t comment on that. They are going to open a wine bar soon which I’m guessing will go in the back area. I agree it’s a little bit of everything in there which sometimes can fail.
So I guess it pays to wait until a restaurant has itself together a bit to go try it!

Disappointed. It’s not much of a grocery store like Metromix had mentioned and their menu selection wasn’t all that great.
I had high hopes for this place and was thoroughly disappointed. I love salty cured pork and the first impression of this place was definitely lackluster.
I ordered the Toasty Italian and it was ok. After I had started eating my sandwich, I was kicking myself in the ass and asking myself why I didn’t just go to Bari :(I was so sad…
I tried a slice of the sausage pizza. It was ok. I did like their choppy sausage pieces… it reminded me of Chuck E Cheese and Tostino’s Party Pizza, which I kind of actually like (I can’t always be fancy). The crust was mediocre. I felt like it could have been a little more crisp and buttery for the thickness that it was. It reminded me of Pizza Metro crust but just wasn’t as good as Pizza Metro’s crust.
I guess this place is an OK substitute if you’re in the neighborhood and just don’t feel like taking your lazy butt over to Grand for a REAL Italian Sandwich.
P. S. The workers their lack enthusiasm. I think their boss needs to give them a 5 hour energy. I felt drained after leaving. The cashier lady was nice enough… she probably had coffee earlier that day.

I want this place to survive and thrive more than anyone. I want a great sandwich shop in my hood. I want a place that is better than Jimmy Johns. I want a place I can take people to and they’ll say holy shit, that’s a great sandwich. Is Sacco Bruno that place? Not even close.
Food, fairly good sandwich. Borders on too pricey; drink, chips and soda was 9 bucks.
Space is weird. Are you a deli, a bar, a sports bar, a restaurant, a grocery store?
The one thing I don’t get, the hours. 11 – 6, deli closes at 4, doesn’t work for me. I’ll try to go on a couple more Saturdays, gotta try a few more sandwich’s for a complete review.

Been there twice now. First on my own, I got an italian sub. Very tasty! The ordering system did seem weird and since I was the only customer ordering, I didn’t like being told to go wait at an empty spot to order. Why can’t I just order from the woman at the front?
Second time a couple days later, I picked up sandwiches with my kids. This time, there was no shufflling around. The woman at the front, right off, took my order. Easy breezy:) Again, great subs. Kids were very happy and the price seems pretty standard for this type of fare.
Totally disagree with previous reviewers about bad customer service. Everyone in there was falling over each other to say hi, and wish us well and check and make sure we were happy.
So there you go! Great subs, great service. Looks like they are working on a liquor license:) Booze can only make it better!

Went to Sacco Bruno with my wife and 1 year old and had a great experience. I’ve been seeing a lot of negative comments regarding the staff and disagree with their customer service and friendliness. Bringing any 1 year old in to a restaurant can be a challenge, but the staff was so friendly to him and we felt a very comfortable and neighborly vibe. Now I know that this might not reflect on food service, but even that was very enjoyable. The staff was very relaxed and friendly, they brought our food out to our tables, and gave us excellent service throughout our entire lunch.
As for the food… I had the pastrami sandwich and my wife had the veggie sandwich, plus we got a side of potato salad and mushrooms salad. Both sandwiches had more than enough meat & veggies and were delicious. The potato salad was VERY good, but I will admit that we weren’t too thrilled with the mushroom salad (would have preferred fresh mushrooms instead of canned).
Another thing we loved about Sacco Bruno was their selection of produce and other grocery items. Living in the neighborhood there’s really no place in walking distance where I can get some quality food staples… so Sacco Bruno now changes this and it’s super convenient!
I give Sacco Bruno a thumbs up with regards to food and service… the place has only been open a month so I’m sure that they’re working out the bugs. I can only see the food and service getting better over time and can’t wait to try more of their menu.
