Description

History

Established in 2003.

River East Art Center began as the North Pier Terminal. Built in 1905 by developer James Pugh, North Pier was a wholesale product exhibition center that offered easy access to buyers and sellers of numerous goods then traversing the Chicago wharves. After construction of the Merchandise Mart and the American Furniture Mart, the terminal was consigned to a warehousing role.

In the late 1980’s, the building was converted to a mixed use space with office space on the upper floors, and restaurants and retail on the Illinois Street and Ogden Slip levels.

River East Art Center brought art galleries into the building and renovated the central atrium into a private event space.

Group Fox bought the building in 2012 and plans to convert to luxury loft residential rentals and retail/restaurant space on the Illinois Street level.
