Red Hen Bread Store

We love their bread and dinner rolls. Many higher end restaurants in Chicago serve their bread.
The scones and cookies also are very good.

The street parking is difficult at this time because of construction I the building across the street.
It is definitely worth a special trip to get their bread and scones.
They also offer sandwiches, which I’ve never tried.
The staff and store are welcoming and we highly recommend the Red Hen Bread Store.

I absolutely love Red Hen. They are my go-​to spot for baguettes, and pretzel rolls when I feel like making my burgers extra sexy. They have an assortment of sandwiches and other treats available as well. The service is always friendly, the products are always consistent, and the prices are excellent for the quality of product they create. Red Hen is easily one of my favorite places in the Wicker Park/​Bucktown area.

We went in looking for pumpernickel onion bread, which sadly, they did not have but after talking to the clerk, she suggested another bread which made one of the BEST paninis I’ve ever prepared! So crisp on the outside and substantial and fresh on the inside.

So me and carbs have a pretty complicated relationship. One moment, we’re in love and pastries become a daily thing, and the next moment I’m tossing it’s ass out the door once I find out the number is bigger than it should be and I can’t fit into my jeans… so yeah… it’s complicated. My cravings for sweets have been intense this week, so as I sipped on my coffee at Starbucks, I remembered this place was nearby, so I went and picked out three things: a rosemary bolillo (damn am I even spelling that right?), a spinach and feta croissant, and a pastry favorite of mine, the glorious almond croissant. Holy carbs!
— The rosemary bread was yummmmyyyy. I love how soft and chewy it was, and the rosemary added an amazing flavor to it. I could definitely imagine eating it with some mozzarella cheese inside of it mmmm.
— The spinach and feta croissant was okay, but I didn’t even taste any feta in it which was a big bummer. Oh well.
— The almond croissant. Yes yes and last, but not least, YES. Sooooooo good, I want at least another 10 of these, please.
Damn you sugary carbs, we’re done… for now… maybe I’ll take you back for an almond croissant.

When I’m in the area I’ll stop by and pick something up. .I don’t have a favorite something yet but I like to stop by to see what goodies I can get. Their caprese sandwich available in summer time was definitely a favorite

Yuuuummmm! The only problem I have ever encountered at Red Hen is indecision. I have never eaten anything there that was disappointing. There is something for everyone; unless you hate delicious food.
I can’t recommend just one item. Go there an see for yourself. Inexpensive, fresh, tasty as fuck! Don’t skip the beverages– great iced coffee and tea.

Love this place! The staff are beyond nice. I went there yesterday with my baby and loaded up for our house. Great turkey sandwich, the BEST loaf of sourdough, awesome banana and chocolate cinnamon muffins and a chocolate chip cookie that is fantastic! Highly recommend if you’re in Bucktown to check this gem out!

Very good fresh basked bread. Nice, well balanced deli style sandwiches and in my opinion outshine the sweets on hand. The sweets and desserts are decent but the sandwiches I’ve had are very good. Not fancy but fresh and high quality ingredients make the sandwiches stand out. The cinnamon pull-​apart is the best tasting thing I’ve had from the sweet side of Red Hen. Always friendly service — a nice neighborhood spot.
I had to update my review (added and additional star) as I’ve been buying my bread weekly from Red Hen. Every time I go I find myself appreciating this place more and more. It’s always solid and when I have questions about ingredients they do not hesitate to pull out the binder of ingredients lists for all there products. Of special note, the multi-​grain bread loaves have a wonderfully chewy crust, covered in seeds. The loaves conveniently come in regular and mini so depending on the rate of bread consumption in your home you can buy more or less at a given time.
And lastly, the chocolate cherry scone is near perfect. Fantastic density, not overly sweet and just moist enough. This is by far my favorite from the sweet side of Red Hen.

Been shopping at RH since they opened this location. Fantastic bread, pastries, and cookies, but I had the worst Chai Tea Latte here the last time I was in – cloyingly sweet and a few degrees shy of lukewarm. The service overall has been very good, the staff is friendly and I’m usually in and out quickly. With only a small counter and some stools to sit on along the window it’s not a great place to hang out, but I do recommend getting take-​out if you’re in the neighborhood.

I picked up a loaf the the Milwaukee sourdough bread, $ 5.20. I had it bread sliced, because I can’t cut straight to save my life. And so I could make my own sourdough inspired grilled cheese sammiches or just eat it straight up. The bread was that so fresh and amazing it lasted 2−¼ days between two mouths in our house.
The major *DOU-​gh* moment where this review failed the 5 star salute, complete lack of customer service. I mean really dude, I was in the store for no more than 3 minutes and I didn’t get more than a «that’s our sourdough» *point*. «Yes [I can bread slice it].» «$ 5.20.» I was making up for the lack of manners with my «please», «thank you», and «have a great day»…but all that buttering up didn’t even register a smile.

Since I’m a huge fan of Birchwood, I thought I’d try a sandwich from Red Hen (where they get their bread).
I got the «New Veggie» sandwich and the combination of goat cheese, red peppers, and apples on their amazing onion bred was AWESOME.
I ordered a plain skim latte, but they have tons of different flavor options. I ordered on the phone, and by the time I walked 5 blocks to get there… it was ready!
They had samples of their danish, and it was so good. Their other baked goods looked mighty tasty as well.
A place that has organic onion rosemary bread loaves? Yes, I will definitely be back.

Red Hen is delicious and a TOTAL lifesaver. The customer service I’ve experienced here is unparalleled. Here’s the story: I had a meeting nearby and was charged with picking up coffee, tea, and breakfast treats for a meeting of roughly 30 people. I drove from my office in Lincoln Park to the meeting in Bucktown, placed my order at Red Hen for tons of goodies and drinks and realized I left my wallet at home! Dummy! The folks at Red Hen said it was no problem and to call in later with my credit card # if I didn’t live by and they would mail me an itemized receipt. I was shocked– a huge order and not paying?! They were so understanding. I went back promptly the next day and paid with a nice tip. THANK YOU RED HEN!
Not to mention the homemade bread and giant muffins are delicious! I love trying all the different kinds of muffins. Red Hen is a must if you’re in Bucktown!

I walked over to this small bakery/​sandwich shop this afternoon after reading about the delicious sandwiches and soup. I couldn’t make up my mind so I asked the person at the counter which of the two sandwiches she recommends for a first time customer and she picked out the chicken pesto. I was quickly rung-​up and my sandwich was quickly put together and wrapped so I could easily carry it home. Although the sandwich was a little over eight dollars, it was a quality sandwich of a good size and full of flavor. I was very happy with my choice and plan to go back and try a different sandwich. It did not blow my socks off, but thought it was tasty, fresh, and satisfying.

I think my jaw has a permanent crick in it after biting through the thick, chewy, perfect ciabatta panino that encapsulated my Knuckle sandwich. It was freshly baked, oily, and had strong spice accents (I’m not good at telling my spices apart. Thyme? Rosemary?), and while the ham was a bit superfluous, the rest of the sandwich met the expectations of the perfect bread: salami, prosciutto, provolone, onions, tomato & lettuce with a house-​made vinaigrette. A perfect interpretation of the Italian sub.
Another thing worth noting is their scones, specifically their maple scone. It was actually the first scone I’ve ever had, but I am completely spoiled now. The slightly crunchy exterior and dusting of large sugar crystal on the outside were just a tease for what awaited on the inside: a thick, moist, sweet, bready pastry that was absolutely packed with maple flavor. It was a snack bought for later that was eaten within minutes. Buy it.

Red Hen is a really nice addition to wicker park/​bucktown. I stopped in here while apartment hunting and was very glad I did.
They had a nice range of breads to choose from. I kept it more simple and got a sesame seed roll along with an oatmeal raisin cookie and a sandwich. The roll was extremely good. I meant to make it last longer and use it for more sandwiches, but instead I found myself snacking on it at home. Oops. It was really good though.
The cookie wasn’t extremely soft, but was done perfectly. Sometimes oatmeal raisin cookies that are soft end up crumbling apart on me. This didn’t happen here. The cookie was massive btw. I didn’t have it all in one go as it was that big.
I got the chicken pesto sandwich for my lunch. I was hoping for a slight bit more pesto, but the bread on the sandwich was the big star. It was really helped the pesto and I found myself almost more paying attention to the bread on the sandwich. There was a nice amount of chicken and I really liked the onions with it too. They just added the right touch.
I was able to get all of this for slight more than $ 10. The sandwich itself took up the main amount of the cost. One can’t be mad about that at all. I look forward to coming back and trying more of their breads and sandwiches.

Unless you don’t mind eating sticky buns and such with flies sitting all over them… and those living in bucktown/​wicker park know what great dog lovers we all are… and that it just so happens there is plenty of dog shit on the streets here and on the top of ajar garbage bins with flies enjoying them, and then going to red hen bread shop …
I have been going to red hen for about six years now and overall like their breads and other stuff pretty much. In fact i have written a positive review about them before.
Lately I’ve noticed the place is getting less and less hygienic… more and more dirty… even a few times i have seen the workers there handing in money with gloves on, and then handling food, or making sandwiches.
Surprised no one has reported them to the health department yet. I hope someone there reads this…
I went to the shop this morning… flies all over. Told the lady working there that i could not buy anything because the place is so dirty and the flies are not good for health. She just very as a matter of fact-​ly said people come and go and not possible to avoid this. I asked if they have thought of a cover or pieces of cloth to put on the food. She said with the baskets not possible.
WTF.
as for me, i still think they have good breads… only have to wait for the weather to cool down to go back.
I think i will be a good citizen and call one of the managers to see if they care… but to be honest, if they have not noticed it so far, what does that tell you about them?

This place would almost get five starts if they had better hours. I feel like whenever I walk by this place, it’s always closed! Too bad too because their cinnamon bun/​thingies are AMAZING! My boyfriend split one the other day and wowee!
I want to come back and try the actual bread, since, supposedly that’s what this place does best!

The sky is falling on this place.
Red Hen needs a face lift and a good cleaning.
It is deeply grimy, not so friendly and the offer was not inspired the morning I was in.
I see they have a strong following and are in a good location but they need to get their game face back on.
Hope to see them figure it out as we need more good bakeries.

I’m officially unable to resist the caprese sandwich. This doesn’t seem like much of a sin, does it? Consider that I was a vegan until I walked past the sign, boasting — nay, gloating — «Caprese sandwich now available!» I couldn’t help myself, it was a battle I would never win.
This may be the greatest sandwich I’ve ever had, in all of it’s simplicity. The bread has tiny little flecks of sea salt that stick to the corners of your mouth to be found as you lick your lips with satisfaction. Perhaps it is a tiny bit sinful…
Also, the chocolate chip blondies are to die for, and I guess I’ll just be a plain old vegetarian instead, because momma just can’t say no to fresh mozzarella.
