Quality Optical

I came in with the intention of getting myself a pair of Tom Ford frames. I brought my prescription from my doctor to have it filled. Ted, the owner, took the time to show me his whole inventory! He mentioned that the majority of all the Tom Ford styles that I liked were too big for my face. He recommended me to try on some Persol frames that were a better fit for my face. I had the opportunity to even try on some vintage eye wear. The styles they have are incredible. I had a variety of styles to pick from. I ended up getting myself a rounded style persol frame. Very happy with my experience at this shop! If you’re in market for some vintage eye wear or unique styles, Ted is the guy to see!

A nose pad fell out of my glasses (that I got at «home» overseas) and after seeing the positive reviews here, I decided to come here for a repair, hoping that this might be also turn out to be the right place to get my contacts renewed and maybe find a new frame. The guy at the front desk was nice and patient with questions, but when it came to repairs, workmanship was sloppy and my explicit requests to have original parts returned were not treated with respect.
The nice part is that Ted was upfront about the cost (about $ 8 for a pair of nose pads) and the fact that it was cash only under $ 10. I asked that original parts be returned to me even though it was only one nosepad — after all, I thought, I might happen to find the other somewhere at home.
The next part wasn’t so great — although both screws were still present, one of them apparently wouldn’t go in with the new pads, and so Ted used a new screw. Reasonable. I was given the original nose pad back, but when I asked about the original screw, I was told it was «in there.» I took a look a few minutes after I left to inspect the repair and it was not the original screw, which I didn’t really mind, but this new screw was sticking out very far and had a sharp point on it. Given the awkward vibe, I didn’t want to bother with getting them to shorten it and figured I might as well look elsewhere, but I went right back and asked as politely as I could whether he might possibly have the original screw still around in case I found the original nosepad… and Ted literally threw up his hands and lectured me about how he has tons of screws and doesn’t charge for them, etc. I listened and finally got handed a screw. I get it — it’s not hard to get eyeglasses screws, and I probably don’t NEED the original screw. But the principle matters — I paid for these frames and I paid for the repair, so why shouldn’t I be entitled to do as I please with the screw that came off of it? It shouldn’t matter whether anyone else thinks I’ll need them. I asked for my screw, just give me my screw. It was a really disappointing experience because I had been looking forward to shopping for vintage frames with them and getting contacts. The selection does look really good, and they also have lots of nice modern frames and some beautiful Jai Kudos that I would have liked to try on. Oh well. I’d like to think this was just a bad day.
After I left, I was walking down the street and saw a SPEX. I decided to go in there and ask them about the long pointy screw and see what they’d say, and someone there spent a bunch of time grinding or cutting off the end of that screw so it was flush, and then charged me NOTHING. I’ll be making my next appointments at SPEX instead.
Bottom line: May be worth a try if you need a good frame selection, but it can feel like they’re trying to get you out the door and if you rub them the wrong way, that fact may be made clear to you. YMMV.

I can only say great things about Ted. He was recommended to me by Kelly at another eye doctor. Ted fixed me up with an awesome pair of glasses for the computer and reading. At first I thought he was a bit pricey but after the excellent service I received when I received my glasses from him. I was very happy.
After about a month I accidentally ran over my glasses with a Bobcat on my daughters farm
(long story). I was devastated, the frames were really smashed up. I could only think of Ted because of his love of antique glasses, he was my only chance. I went him today and within 10 minutes, I was wearing them again. I asked how much and he just held his hand for a handshake with a big smile. I owe him a million bucks or a million Thank You’s. He is well worth every cent and I highly recommend him.

Please avoid this business or else you will be in for a disappointing experience. I went in for contacts. I specifically stated that I was wearing my last pair and needed new contacts, same brand, same prescription. I was given samples and was told that my contacts would be in the following week. I had to go back two additional times to get more samples. THREE weeks later I went in and was given my contacts. They ordered me more samples! Why would I want more samples of the same contacts I have been wearing for years? The person I spoke with made it seem like it was my fault because I did not explicitly stated that I needed «permanent» contacts. I have never encountered this before. One would think that if I was wearing my last pair of contacts I need a new supply not additional trial contacts. Poor customer service and I will never be going back.

Dear Readers: I was extremely disappointed by «Quality Optical.»
I urgently needed new computer glasses. After accessing Unilocal,I discovered «Quality Optical» with over a dozen positive reviews. Without any concerns, I visited «Quality Optical» for an eye exam and order new computer glasses.
After I picked-​up my order, I tried to work with my new glasses, but without any success. When I used them on a computer, my eyes started to hurt after 5 – 7 minutes, followed by a splitting headache.
I was forced to visit «Quality Optical» office SEVEN times. I spent a lot of my valuable time for travel in traffic and appointments. And after all of this, I was still without my computer glasses!
There are other disturbing events, but I won’t discuss them in public.
Afterwards, I was required to go to another Optician and start from the beginning.
My recommendation: Avoid this (poor) «Quality Optical» office.

I’m a fan of this business. When I’ve gone to big name *cough, lens crafters, cough* places I’ve always had to wait for 2 hours before getting my contacts. This place I was in and out in an hour. it was great.

Quality Optical probably has the best selection of mid-​century vintage frames in the city. The window display may not impress, but the owner (Ted) is an avid collector and has a LOT more in his storeroom. Give yourself at least an hour to browse and try on, and tell Ted what you’re looking for.
I spent about 2 hours scrutinizing frames and vacillating while Ted brought up box after box of glasses. Every pair was unique, and looked brand new (dead stock). Finally I found my perfect frames – they were almost exactly what I’d asked for, but I STILL wasn’t sure, so Quality Optical held them for me while I slept on it. (I needed to be convinced I could pull them off for daily wear.)
I get compliments on my glasses literally every day. My favorite is when someone stops me on the street to tell me that their grandma/​great aunt had the same glasses in the 50s/​60s. Hopefully I’ve already sent a handful of new happy customers to Quality Optical.

With a pair of vintage Oliver Peoples sunglasses missing a small frame screw I was concerned as to where I could go to ensure they received the care they needed.
First stopped at D/​Vision and they were unable to help after working on them for a bit, then hit the O/​P shop on Rush who offered to send them back to the factory (for a fee) I figured I may be out of luck and threw them on top of the armoire…
… months later moved to a new hood and remembered Quality Optical as I have been here a few times with my friend who was a loyal customer before leaving town, had some free time and thought why not see what they can do.
Took care of my issue while I looked at new frames, thanks! Will be sure to recommend them to friends and hit them up when my scrip is up. With a large selection of vintage (never worn) frames, and new styles they have a unique selection of great glasses for all face types.

This is a terrific owner-​operated business. They got me an eye doctor appointment within 2 days, and Dr. Marnul was wonderful and professional. Upgraded both my contact lens and eye glasses prescription, along with the usual glaucoma test, dilation, field vision tests, etc that are required for diabetics annually. He even asked the tech to conduct the field vision a second time because my results were terrible. I’m happy to report that these peepers are doing very well.
Ted, the owner, rang me up and we spoke a little bit. Quality Optical has been open for decades. The service is truly spectacular. He makes sure to talk to each of his customers, and really takes care of them. They didn’t have any trials for my contacts, but offered to order me some. I will definitely be coming here to get some new glasses and for all my eye care from now on. Highly recommend to all those in the area. Plus, they have over 200 pairs of vintage frames, if you’re into that sort of thing. Amazing!

I’ve not gotten glasses in 10 plus years & this is first new optometrist (that i purchased glasses from) in 23 plus years. Felt they were honest & options were weighed according to my needs. ‘Drive at night?” No. Work with close up things? Yes. different options for different needs. The eye doctor is a real jerk. He is aggressive and angry all the time. Ted, the owner, is rude. I couldn’t wait for the year to end so I could switch doctors through my insurance. Also, their prices are sky high. They suck. AVOID!!!

I found myself in a dilemma when my contact ripped in my eye and I called my deliver-​it-​in-​the-​mail-​contact-​provider to discover my brand was discontinued and my prescription was expired. GAAH! For any long-​time farsighted bifocal wearers who rejoiced to the heavens at adolescence when you were allowed to get contacts, you know the pain of being without your contacts even for a day. To complicate matters, the last acceptable (I’m now revoking that opinion) eye doctor I saw in the city was out of town until the next day and I was assured he wouldn’t even call in a comprable prescription to get me by until I could come in for a full exam. So I went on the search for another place that could get me in quickly and didn’t cost an arm and a leg for an exam.
I found Quality Optical. I had limited interaction with Ted but the receptionist was beyond helpful. She was able to work me in at the end of the day as a walk in and called back immediately with a sooner appointment due to a cancellation. I got there a half hour earlier than the appointment and they were able to take me even sooner. I had no more than filled out my paperwork and opened a magazine when the doctor was calling me back for my exam. He was thorough yet efficient and knew his stuff – I’ve been going to the eye doc for 30 yrs now and saw the same wonderful doc for 18 of them so I’m a tough critic. He explained things without being condescending and without lecturing me in my neglect of my eyes in recent years. He even threw in a prescription for glasses for me just in case.
My exam (with a $ 10 insurance discount) was $ 99 and I was sent on my way with a trial pair of lenses. Save yourself the expense of buying the lenses from them directly and ask for a copy of your prescription – by law it’s your right to have it. The receptionist was more than happy to meet that request so no problems there!
After 12 years of only seeing the eye doctor when absolutely necessary because none of them were good enough after my childhood doctor retired, I can say with confidence I think I’ve found my new long term eye doctor!

I received very poor customer service and was sold an expensive lens that I did not need. I was sold a pair of transition lenses.
I had and eye exam at Quality Optical about 9 months before purchasing. I did bring in frames to have upgraded to my ‘new’ prescription. Immediately, Ted, thought I should wear progressive lenses. Of course, these are most expensive lenses that can be put into a pair of Silhouettes,(frames)
When I went to pick them up, I was completely rushed. There were people in there when I went in, so I had to wait at least 20 minutes for Ted to even wait on me. Once he did, he expected me to figure out how to work with them right away. It was terrible. I could barely walk in them, let alone read and he sent me out as quickly could. (He need to wait on the next person who came walking in for a pick up and wanted to get going home) He told me to ‘practice’ with them and I would get use to them.
Mind you, I told him from the beginning I am a heavy computer user. I told him I have 2 monitors that I am on ALL day.
I spent 2 weeks trying and trying to get them to work for me to no avail. I then called and went back in for an adjustment. At that time, I told Ted I was having a really hard time walking with them on and that reading my computer was tough. He was very short with me; like I was dumb; and gave me a ‘reading lesson’. Not kidding.
I spent another 2 – 3 weeks trying and trying to adjust. Which did work.
Finally, I put on my old $ 12 ‘airport’ reading glasses and could read my screens perfect.
Called Ted and went back-​again. Well; his only option for me was to trash my almost $ 400.00 transition lenses and put in computer/​reading lenses. OR he said he could make me a new pair of glasses for a discount price of around $ 200 – 300.
(OH; he did suggest I have my eyes re-​examined by a different doctor at his place, who gave me a completely different script than the first dr. I saw at Quality Optical. This meant that the lenses that were prescribed to me were wrong. They were +1.25 too strong.)
This whole experience was a nightmare. I really depend on my eyes to earn a living and was receiving terrible customer service.
I was as patient as I could be, as Ted always seemed stressed and rushed. I think he was; as he just wanted to make a quick sale and onto the next customer he could oversell.

I really liked the wide selection of frames, but the service wasn’t very good. The owner/​salesman was a little on the slimy side, and also pretty aggressive. I left in frustration because any comment I gave about fit was met with a very defensive remark about how all frames needed adjustment (thank you, I know that). It was my impression that he’d like to know how they fit so that we could adjust them in the future, but apparently his business is so bad these days that he was getting desperate and in turn got defensive. I would’ve happily bought frames there from a nicer, more patient person.

If you have the vision insurance that will pay for a significant chunk of the exam and glasses, then I would say splurge nad experience the top-​notch customer service and quality of care and attention you would get at Quality Optical. If you are looking to save money or you have to pay out-​of-​pocket for your vision needs, you may want to shop elsewhere as glasses here can be in the hundreds of dollars.
Their customer service is superb and the selection of the eyeglasses are very good and they even have some amazing vintage and designer frames. But this establishment is pricey so unless you have excellent insurance that will cover some of the costs or you are willing to pay out of pocket, I would say that you should probably go elsewhere if saving money is your main objective.

I’ve been looking for some 60’s vintage glasses for about two years now, but whenever i find them, they’re priced at about $ 6 – 700. I randomly walked into Quality Optical, tried on a few pairs, and told the owner what i was looking for. He told me he had something on order, and to come back in a week. What he described sounded promising, so i returned.
Not only were they exactly what i was looking for, but moderately priced. The frames are from the late 60’s, black framed with solid gold on the bridge.
From there, i made an appointment for a new prescription, and found out Ive been off on my contact prescription. After fixing that, i sat with the owner and discussed different options on the lenses.
Overall, a very good experience, a very helpful staff, and run by a guy who knows how to do it right.

The selection of vintage frames is awesome… even though my head is too big and vintage frames looks silly on me, I still enjoyed looking at them while I waited in between eye exam and actually getting my frames. Everything everyone on here has said about Ted is dead on, but I would like to take a moment to talk about the optometrist who examined me, Paul.
Last weekend the lady and I were stranded on the side of I-​90, right in front of Medieval Times. A guy pulled over and offered us a ride to a gas station but told us we had to find our way back because he was on his way to work. No problem there!
We got to talking and after a while we found out that we worked at Quality Optical… that’s when it hit me: This kind hearted stranger was the same dude who examined my eyes back in February! Paul! Once we made this connection he offered to drive us back to our abandoned truck instead of leaving us to fend for ourselves at the gas station. Amazing.

Best eyeball experience ever.
Everything everyone’s said about Ted is absolutely true, and I should have written this review a long time ago. I went in last fall. My vision was blurry and I was itching for a great pair of glasses. It’s right in my neighborhood, so I stopped in one day. Ted was really helpful. I told him I was looking for big chunky plastic frames, and after he showed me a few on display that I didn’t care for, he brought out several pairs of vintage frames from the back. I narrowed it down to a pair of men’s frames from the ‘60s. He scheduled me an eye exam and I had my glasses five days after that. In the past, I’ve waited for over two weeks to get glasses.
I get tons of compliments on the frames and I couldn’t be happier with them, not to mention they’re big and I can actually SEE out of them. Quality Optical specializes in vintage stock – cateyes, oxfords, etc. – so if you’re looking for something in that vein, you should definitely check this place out. Ted even had my lenses coated in this super fancy anti-​glare stuff because the lenses I ordered were out of stock, and even though there was a fairly severe price difference, he didn’t charge me extra. The specs gave me headaches at first, but I’ve taken them in for adjustments twice, and now they’re perfect. Love this place. The definition of service.

I first wrote about Quality Optical in early 2007, but I said too little, so I’m starting over:
Ted, the owner, is a great craftsman and very nice guy. Three years ago he skillfully put new lenses in several antique frames I had, and I’ve worn them happily ever since, until recently, when I broke them along with another well worn pair that broke on it’s own.
I was dreading the expense of solving this problem. My eyes stink. I just can’t wear dimestore magnifiers. It’s an arm and a leg when I buy glasses because of the need for bifocals and progressive lenses.
I had one last set of old frames with good lenses in them, but the temples are too short and while they look good, they really don’t fit right.
Honest Ted’s least expensive solution: he found me an old set of temples from a different antique frame that are longer, and which matched my last frames with the good lenses in them. These longer temples make my older, not so useful frames functionally new, useful and well-​fitting.
He could just as easliy have told me no-​can-​do and tried to sell me new glasses for thrice the price.
And as to his inventory of new frames: diverse and like most quality eye shops, not cheap.
But pay this place a visit when needed, because the man is so honest and helpful, he deserves the business.
