N & G Produce

It is very sad to me that N & G is now closed. It was a great community spot that made this area feel like a neighborhood. As West Loop transitions to becoming a trendy dining and nightlife outpost, we will lose more places like N & G. Developers are turning these storefronts into overpriced dining and drinking venues, which makes a lot more money than fruits and veggies. Appreciate John for all his years serving this community; sad to see him go.

I love this place! The produce is always fresh and the owners are sooo nice! I would rather spend my money here than at Dominicks/​Jewel!
Price are also better than Dominiks and Jewel!
The also carry other items other than produce and fruit. Such as salad dressings, pasta, etc.
Would recommend N&G to anyone.

It is a wonderful store to visit because of the fresh varieties of fruits and vegetables and nuts available. The owners of the place are very warm and good. I remember visiting the store on a saturday around 3:15 pm, they were about to close however they waited for us to make our purchase. I loved the fact that verything was fresh and lighter on cost factor too.
However it is a little inconveniently located and I heard its going to get closed soon.:(

Love this spot. Mom & Pop place with decent produce and great prices and you just feel good about being a customer.
Also, the pint sized spices on the side wall are incredibly cheap– what you would pay for a tiny bottle of spices at a regular grocery store. Plus, stop by one of the meat markets next door to get, well, meats,

I have been to Whole Paycheck and Stanleys for good produce, but I thought I would try something new. I walked in and they were getting ready to close shop, but they were so helpful and let me walk back into the frig area and pick out what I was looking for. John helped me pick even more delicious items. Great prices, Great people, Great experience. I am going back for sure.

I love this place. I stopped in after riding my bike over. It’s a small shop, however they have everything you could possibly want… or you can ask.
Also, John is like the nicest guy ever. Not pushy, but there for all your shopping needs.
They have fruit, vegetables, dried goods, herbs, nuts, canned stuff… etc.
Cheap! Omg, so cheap! This is going to be my new place!!!

This is one of my favorite places! My family and I eat an almost entirely Vegan diet and there is nothing more helpful than a fruit and vegetable market in the neighborhood! Johnny’s mom even watches our infant daughter in her stroller while we shop. This is an old school family owned business, I wish more were left.
The above is great, but what you get is fresh produce priced very fairly and helpful service. If I need something special, all I have to do is ask Johnny and give him a day or two notice. It’s really a pleasure doing business here.

Johnny K! I love this guy and you will as well. He knows spices. He knows fruits. He knows nuts. (And I’m nuts ;) Well, I AM nuts for N & G Produce. It’s not everyday that a proud owner walks up to you in his store and introduces himself. It was a refreshing blast from a past that I’m even young enough not to have fully experienced… but I’ve heard about it!
I wandered in here one afternoon after walking up Halsted from Mariano’s where the power had gone out. There was no power on in any business… until I got to N&G! It was like a white light glowed about the place as well. Laaaaaaa! There was a sweet irony that the power was out at the «fancy» Mariano’s and they couldn’t do business at all. At N&G, even had the power gone out — you’d still be able to do transactions as Johnny himself could handwrite you a receipt. Or his mom could do it if she weren’t up front at the door, greeting customers while stocking a shelf!
OK OK and all that «know your customer» touchy-​feely stuff aside… does this place have the goods? YES! I’ve never seen such beautiful produce. (I’ve never even said «beautiful produce» before as that’s been reserved for grandma’s expressions.) I still can’t get over the size of those shallots. I loaded up on some of the bulk goods — mixing up chocolate covered everythings with dried apricots and the like. The prices were as excellent as the quality of the items.
Don’t wait ’til the next blackout (or whiteout!) ~ get yourself some Johnny K.

John was really nice; I visited on a Saturday morning. I got some wonderful smelling thyme, nectarines, bananas, and AMAZING grapes. I grew up living within driving distance of vineyards, so I’ve enjoyed grape season for many years. The ones from N&G brought back memories. John also threw in two oranges for me to try. Turns out his family has been selling produce since 1930 in Chicago. Wow!
I’m really excited about this find! I’m looking forward to a weekly produce visit to N&G!

Super friendly Greek family runs this West Loop hidden gem. Great selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, spices, nuts, beans and condiments. Nicole, the daughter, was extremely helpful and friendly. She even measured the large containers of spices so I only had to buy half the bottle. The owners were also there, her father and uncle. Both also extremely knowledgeable and friendly.
If you don’t see something you are looking for, ask and they may very well have it in the back. Glad I finally stopped in because I will definetely be back. What a pleasant experience for my first and surely not my last visit.

LOVE this place! Don’t be fooled by the outside appearance. This is an old school ma and pa sort of place, a real West Loop gem. They don’t even have a cash register, they weigh your items and add it up in their head, which is part of the charm of shopping here.
Produce is extremely fresh. Prices are great. Lasts way longer than produce I have bought elsewhere. If you don’t see anything, just ask and they most likely have it in the back. If you want something really unusual, John can special order it for you if you tell him a day or two in advance. John and his mother are so nice, they make you feel like family, it is always nice to see them. They take credit cards now too. I just wish they were open in the evenings…

What a great grocery! simple, secret, humble… and the best!
No cash registers — just the wonderful classic mom n’ pop with a heavy accent giving you change out of an apron pocket. Picked up my celery stalks (buck n a half) my awesome potato gnocchi (buck n a half) some nice avocados. Ready for the perfect local-​delish lunch. GO TO THIS PLACE IF YOUR IN THE FULTON MARKET HOOD !!!

The proprietor of this establishment, John, will greet you with a smile and a handshake. You take a look around at the fine wholesale goods, fresh veggies, succulent fruits. Ask John for anything you don’t see, he keeps some items in the fridge in the back room. Talk about precision, you will only see a few baskets of strawberries, a few bags of lettuce, corn, and potatoes. But don’t be fooled. John knows what he’s doing, as he only puts out a few at a time and rotates them throughout the day from the cold ones in the back as to keep every purchasable item fresh, crisp, and delicious! No cash register is in site. John takes a survey of your items, adds then in his head and gives you an amazing price, especially considering the high quality of the produce. A small grandmother figure with a kind smile sits in the corner the whole time chatting with customers, sometimes a scolding tone to John, but she’ll be more than happy to suggest a recipe when prompted.
Open 4am 4pm, mon to sat. Closed sun. I’ve always used cash, to be honest i don’t think he has a credit card machine… but i could be wrong about this one. Not all the wholesalers on Randolph street are open to the public, but this is the crème of the crop! Seriously, you won’t be disappointed! You and your loved ones will love eating fresh again after a visit here!

If you live in the West Loop and don’t get your produce here you are pretty much a moron! Great prices, friendly service, and a local old school feel. John the owner and is an original gangsta of fruits and veggies you can’t go wrong here! Definitely N & G Produce gets the Team Do stamp of approve!!!

I love that places like this still exist in Chicago.
Dan G. (savant of all things West Loop) turned me onto this place and I’ll definitely be a regular customer. The owner (and his mom) are so incredibly nice; that alone is worth a visit, but factor in beautiful produce and fantastic prices and you can’t go wrong here.
At first I didn’t think the selection was that bountiful, that is until I was told to ask John (the owner) for anything I wanted, and it would magically appear from «the back.» Seriously, they have everything you could want.
In addition to produce, they also carry tons of dry and bulk goods, again, all at reasonable prices.
I walked out with a ton of stuff for only $ 8.50, including eight gorgeous, perfectly ripe peaches that I turned into a delicious cobbler over the weekend.
When I paid, the owner made change from his own pocket. I’m not even sure if they have cash registers. That’s when you know a place is old school.
N & G has oodles of charm. It’s the very definition of a «mom and pop» store.

Being relatively new to the neighborhood, I never knew this place existed during the winter because without the doors being open, the front does look somewhat dingy. HOWEVER, one day I was walking down Randolph and the wide doors were open and all the open produce instantly got my attention. While it is not as sexy as Whole Foods or even Jewel, I definitely prefer this neighborhood spot! N&G produce is the type of family business that you want to walk to once (or maybe more) per week to pick up your fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, etc. The workers treat you as if you were one of their grandchildren as one worker (maybe the owner?) instantly said, «if you don’t see something you need, let me know and I can get it in the back.»
Great customer service + fresh produce + cheap prices = returning customer!

I love N&G! I tell all of my friends about it and now I am telling you all about it! The produce is always fresh and lasts for days! Not like Stanley’s where it is end of life. The prices are super cheap.
It is less than a mile from my condo, so I usually walk. There is limited street parking, but I always find a spot when I do drive. Go here and you will not be disappointed!

Great local produce shop. Very high quality produce for very cheap prices. The owners/​workers in there are very friendly.

Needing to get some produce for the fajitas I was planning on cooking, I decided to forgo Dominick’s and check out N and G. It was recommended to me by Jimmy, the owner of Graziano’s across Randolph, and it is another West Loop gem.
It seems that a lot of the places along Randolph are open to the public and N and G has a large selection of fresh produce, nuts, pastas, herbs and spices. They have typical warehouse hours and I was lucky to catch them while they were shutting down for the day. That didn’t seem to matter to them as they were friendly and helped me out with what I was looking for. A bunch of peppers and onions only ran me two bucks!
This was a great find and I’ll have to thank Jimmy for pointing me this way. As I mentioned the hours are early 4am-​4pm.

Here is a wonderful old-​fashioned produce market! This long time Greek owned establishment is a gem on Randolph Street.
Excellent produce with great presentation, with a fine selection of olives and nuts, olive oil and many items also may be purchased here in bulk.
Excellent, friendly service. Highly recommended!
